Cynthia Rowley dresses run from rugby minis and silk midis to lace maxis and printed silk, with a handful of tops to match. I wrote this one as a friend would, with the pieces I would reach for first this fall.

Cynthia Rowley Dresses: The Art-School Label With a Sense of Humor
Cynthia Rowley, the dress with a sense of humor
In 1981, Cynthia Rowley was a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago when she won a fellowship, and she used it to move to New York. She had planned to study painting. She switched to fashion, partly because, in her words, painting is typically a very solitary endeavor and she loves working as a team. The label followed in 1988, and that is the whole reason Cynthia Rowley dresses feel the way they do: made by someone trained to look at color and surface first. I went deeper on a related idea in ASTR the Label Dresses: Sizing, Fit and Best Buys.
She made her first dress at seven, and the brand still has that kid-at-the-sewing-table energy. Her credo is to stay curious and be original, and the company has put its name on a surf line, roller skates and a cereal box. A dress from the label tends to have one funny, specific idea in it, a knot at the waist, a raised flower, a rugby collar on something that should not have one. In October I think of minis with tights and boots.
Start the mini wardrobe with the Ardie rugby minidress in black cotton, with its white spread collar and drop shoulders. It is the one I would pull on for a weekend away. The Yacht Dress, a striped cotton jersey tee dress that knots at the waist, is the easy sibling. For evening, the Blair is a navy sequined wool-cashmere sweater-vest dress, which is how I like my sparkle: warm and a little silly. The Silk-Wool Sleeveless Shift in black is the quiet one, with a jewel neck and a concealed back zip, and the Domino is a black silk mini with a draped bodice and a white-lined tie waist, is the one that gets the compliments.
Practical tip: the Ardie and Blair are cut roomy and the shift is straight, so check the shoulder-to-hem length against your tights and boot height before anything else.

Cynthia Rowley midi dresses for dinners and weddings
Every fabric label here tells you something, so read it. The Amelie is 100 percent silk, fully lined, with an elastic waistband, and the Mixed Media Dropwaist pairs a fitted knit bodice with a flowing satin A-line skirt. That mix of knit and satin is classic label thinking: one dress, two textures, no apology.
In my fashion dreams, a woman is walking into a fall wedding in the rust Satin Slip Dress with a black wool coat over it and low heels. The Satin Drop Waist Midi in light blue and white stripes is built for exactly that guest role. The Fiona is pink, with a rib-knit V-neck bodice, bell sleeves and a full silk skirt, and it turns a plain Tuesday dinner into something more. For a cooler pick, the Clara in black pinstripe seersucker has spaghetti straps, a square neck, a bow at the bodice and side slip pockets, so I would wear it with a cropped cardigan and tights.
For nights out, the Paola Paillette is a slim black scoop-neck midi covered in large paillettes, double-layered with stretch. The Sleeveless Bonded Dress has the sculpted, structured feel of the brand's bonded fabric, with a metallic floral panel.
Fitting-room test: the Mixed Media Dropwaist runs small, so sit down in it and make sure the bodice does not ride up. What I would skip: the Paola if your plans involve a long drive in a car seat, because paillettes and seat belts do not agree.

Maxi dresses and kaftans, Cynthia Rowley style
Length changes the whole mood. A maxi from this label is still playful, but it moves slower, and a few of them are better in October than in July.
The lace ones are the easiest to love. The Lace Flutter Sleeve Maxi is black with a V-neck, flutter sleeves and a graceful A-line skirt, about 58 inches from shoulder to hem, and the Verona goes head to toe in black lace with a sweeping skirt and slight stretch. Picture her at a holiday party in the Verona with a velvet blazer over the shoulders and flat boots. The Valentina is hot pink with a knotted asymmetric shoulder, a black waist tie, and a side slit, for the person who wants to be the loudest and best-dressed one at the table. The Windswept is oversized black with alternating sheer panels and side ties, which makes it closer to a gown version of a beach cover-up.
The Palermo, Portofino and Ravello kaftans are the travel packers. The first two are 100 percent ramie, 54 inches long, belted, with side pockets, and the Ravello adds a tassel waist tie in olive and turquoise florals. I would take one on a late-fall trip somewhere warm and wear it open over a swimsuit, which is very much in the spirit of the label that grew out of a surf habit.
Practical test: lift your arms and walk up a flight of stairs in the length you plan to wear, with the shoes you plan to wear. What I would skip: the Ravello if you hate hand washing, because that is the care instruction.

Silk and printed Cynthia Rowley dresses
The Cynthia Rowley prints are painterly for a reason. She went to art school intending to paint, and the florals here read as though someone arranged them rather than a machine repeated them. Black grounds keep them serious enough for fall.
Three of these share a shimmery silk blend of 54 percent rayon, 34 percent silk and 12 percent Lurex: the Printed Puff Sleeve Midi, about 54 inches long, the Floral Silk-Blend Puff-Sleeve Minidress, about 33 inches, and the matching tie-neck idea. I would wear the short one with sheer black tights and ankle boots. The Floral Silk Dropwaist Ruffled-Hem Minidress is 100 percent silk with a keyhole cutout at the chest, and the Bon Voyage Silk is a one-shoulder floral mini with a wide sleeve and white hem. For gold and lace, the Gold Filigree is a black and gold silk midi with a lace-trimmed V-neck.
If you do not want a print, the Collectible Silk Shirt Dress is oversized, black, and collared. Belt it, roll the sleeves, and I would add a leather boot.
Test before you buy: silk that is unlined, like the Bon Voyage, shows everything, so plan your slip. The Fil Coupe High Low comes with its slip, which is thoughtful. What I would skip: the Floral Organza Scallop midi if you are between sizes, since it runs small.

Cynthia Rowley tops for the dress lover
The brand's tops are just the dresses with fewer rules. Every one of them is a piece of the same stubborn, funny idea, and they pair with the skirts and trousers you already own. If you want to keep going, Baobab Swimwear and Dresses: A Bogota Label Born From Scraps is the one I would read next.
The Collectible Silk Shirt is an oversized black button-down in a bouquet print with covered buttons, and I would tuck half of it into wide trousers. The Ladybug Silk Shirt is also black and oversized, with one tiny red ladybug print, and it is the quietest joke the label has made. The Windswept Tie Top is a boat-neck silk piece with cascading side ties, and the Monroe Silk Top, crisp white with a gathered high neck and balloon sleeves, belongs under a black blazer. For evening, the Match Point Sequin Tank is a white knit in a wool-cashmere blend, which I would put under a leather jacket.
The Salina Sheer Shirt is ivory and sheer, to be worn over a bralette or open as a layer, and the Botanical Noir PJ Top is cotton voile with delicate florals that matches its pants. The Bon Voyage Top is a floral silk halter with an open back and ties, which I would keep for a dinner with a long coat.
What I would skip: the Monroe on days with a crowded commute, since it is unlined and has an invisible back zip that wants a second pair of hands.
The one I would reach for first
If you are new to the label, I would do it in this order. Pick the mini with the clearest joke, the Ardie or the Yacht Dress, and wear it with boots this month. Then add one silk dress that suits a long dinner, and finish with a kaftan for the next trip somewhere warm. Keep the fit notes in mind: the Mixed Media Dropwaist and the organza midi both run small, so size with that in mind.
Her first dress was at seven, and the label still behaves like someone who just discovered scissors. I would start with the knot at the waist.
