Fall 2026 Jacket Trends, From Peplum to Suede

The fall 2026 jacket trends are soft suede, peplum hems, shearling and army-green military shapes. This guide breaks down each one with four versions to shop, plus four reliable jackets to start with. It covers leather, tweed, suede and shearling, so there is an option for every kind of cold.

Four Jackets to Start With

The fall 2026 shows made the jacket the centrepiece of the outfit rather than an afterthought, with peplum hems at Stella McCartney, Jacquemus and Proenza Schouler and a military revival led by Khaite. Before chasing any of those, it helps to own one reliable jacket in each weight. Nili Lotan's black leather Redley bomber, Marant Étoile's beige patchwork cotton Risla jacket, Etro's navy tweed and Veronica Beard's cropped twill Lazaro Dickey jacket cover most of what fall throws at you.

Suede, Softly

Suede jackets carried over from last fall, and this year they come in more than tan. Arma's brown Faye, Rick Owens' grey wool-trimmed suede biker, Frame's beige utility jacket and Proenza Schouler's forest-green Irine cover the range from classic to slightly odd. Wear any of them with jeans and a knit, and let the nap of the leather be the detail.

The Peplum Returns

Peplum is back without the early-aughts going-out-top baggage. Jacquemus's dark brown Palmier blazer and Stella McCartney's navy crepe jacket are the tailored versions, Khaite's black hooded June jacket puts the flare into leather, and Dolce & Gabbana's black wool jacket adds a plush trim. Wear them with straight trousers or a slim skirt so the flared hem stays the focus.

Shearling Season

Shearling is the warmest trend here, and the one least likely to date. Joseph's light brown belted Manu jacket and Loulou de Saison's dark brown Russo are the classic shapes, Nour Hammour's black Sofie is cropped at the hip, and Rixo's burgundy suede jacket keeps the shearling to the trim. Choose based on how cold your winter actually gets, since the belted and full-shearling versions do the heaviest lifting.

Military Detail

The army jacket has been a vintage-store staple for decades, and this season the fabrics got fancier. JW Anderson's oversized satin bomber with a tipped hem, Simone Rocha's green hooded shell bomber with a plush trim, Dries Van Noten's army-green Vitsa cotton-twill jacket and Saint Laurent's brown cotton-twill jacket all borrow from the uniform without looking like surplus. Throw one over a slip dress, or over a hoodie and jeans.

Our honest take

A jacket is where fall trend shopping makes the most sense, because it is the piece people actually see for four months. If you take one thing away, let it be that the trend jackets work best over plain clothes, like jeans, a knit or a simple dress. We would skip the peplum if you mostly wear oversized tops, since the flare needs a slim layer underneath to read. Suede and shearling are the safer bets for longevity, while the military jackets are the most fun to wear over something unexpectedly feminine. Start with the jacket you would reach for on a grey Tuesday, and treat the trendier shapes as the second jacket rather than the first.
