Finery Perfume List: Every Scent, With Its Little Story

Finery Perfume List: Every Scent, With Its Little Story

The finery perfume list has eighteen eaux de parfum at Target, each with its own little story. Each bottle comes with a one-line scent story and a short list of what it smells like.

A Perfume Named for a Color

On March 16, 2023, Maesa Group announced fine'ry., a fragrance line made to launch with a single big retailer. Maesa is the company behind Kristin Ess and Being Frenshe, and the idea, according to the US Chamber of Commerce, was luxury-inspired perfume that anyone could pick up on an ordinary shopping trip. In 2024 Circana named the line's The New Rouge the top single fragrance launch in mass. That is a lot of weight for a perfume named after a color.

What I like about Finery perfume is the way it is written. Every scent gets a little story instead of a list of notes. Without a Trace is about the scent left on a pillow after someone has gone. Desert Spirit is a whisper floating over violet sands at twilight. You can laugh at that, and then you smell it, and it makes sense as a mood.

The first grid is eight eaux de parfum, from a peony garden to a bowl of vanilla. The second is two more eaux de parfum, plus the body mists and the small sizes, for people who want to wear a scent lightly or carry one in a bag.

Here is a test I like: spray one on warm, damp skin, which is what the brand suggests, and then leave it alone for an hour. Do not sniff your wrist every five minutes. Notice what you catch on your own collar on the train. That is the real scent, and it is the one to choose.

Eight Eaux de Parfum, Eight Moods

Start by sorting fine'ry.'s eight by how sweet you want to smell. Vanilla is the loudest theme here. Sweet On the Outside is Madagascar vanilla with cacao wood and smoked vetiver, and the brand says there is something darker behind the sweetness. Athena is vanilla three ways, nectar, orchid and bean, and the description is about confidence more than dessert. Pistachio Please is the gourmand one, with pistachio milk, fluffy vanilla and tonka bean. Not Another Cherry pairs wild cherry with Turkish rose and almond amaretto, so it reads like a cocktail more than a candy.

If sweet is not you, look at the greener end. Flower Bed is lush peony with green apple and wild bamboo leaf, the one I would hand to a friend who says she only likes clean florals. Desert Spirit is white pear and airy violet over Atlas cedarwood. Without a Trace is neroli blossom with cedarwood and suede musk, and it is the quietest of the eight.

The New Rouge is the famous one, built on golden saffron, amber resin and sandalwood. The brand describes it as a dream of abundance, and it is the warmest, spiciest scent in the grid.

The brand's advice is to spray on warm, damp skin, inside the wrists or on the nape of the neck. Try that right after a shower.

What I would skip: buying a sweet one on the strength of the name alone. Pistachio Please and Not Another Cherry sound similar on paper but wear very differently, so smell each before you commit.

Finery Perfume, Answered

Every eau de parfum. Flower Bed, Sweet On the Outside, The New Rouge, Without a Trace, Not Another Cherry, Pistachio Please, Desert Spirit, Athena, Born to Empress, Before the Rainbow, Magnetic Candy, Midnight Cafe, Madame, Fireside Vanilla, No Prince Required, She's A Goodie, Rosa Lina and Dreaming in Coral. Most also come as a 5 ounce body mist.

The pink bottles. Born to Empress is the bright pink one, with pink rhubarb, damask rose and cypress wood. Flower Bed is the pale pink one, with lush peony, green apple and wild bamboo leaf. Rosa Lina is the rosier choice on the notes, with sparkling lychee, velvet rose and cashmere musk.

The dark bottles. Sweet On the Outside has the darkest bottle in the line, and Athena is the gold tan one. For something in the same coffee-brown mood, Midnight Cafe smells of crème de café, jasmine absolute and patchouli.

The ACOTAR collaboration. Target lists fine'ry. x ACOTAR editions of No Prince Required, The New Rouge and Flower Bed, plus a men's cologne called High Lord of the Night Court. The regular No Prince Required is night blooming jasmine, pink marshmallow and amber.

More Scents, Mists and Minis

This fine'ry. grid is for wearing scent in a lighter, more portable way. It starts with two more eaux de parfum. Born to Empress is pink rhubarb with damask rose and cypress wood, described as a stroll through a garden in the early morning. Before the Rainbow is the odd one in the best way, with salty air, bergamot and tree moss, meant to feel like the calm after rain.

Then come the body mists, which are five fluid ounces of scent you spritz directly onto warm, damp skin. Three of the eaux de parfum from the first grid come back in this form. The Flower Bed body mist keeps the peony, green apple and bamboo leaf. Without a Trace is the neroli, cedarwood and suede musk again, and Sweet on the Outside is the vanilla, cacao wood and smoked vetiver. A mist is the friendlier way to try a scent if you are not sure about a full bottle.

For a bag, there are two small ones. The mini body mist in The New Rouge is 2.5 fluid ounces of saffron, amber and sandalwood. The mini purse spray in Flower Bed is a 10 ml vial, which the brand calls travel friendly, and it fits in the smallest pocket you own.

Here is a pairing I like: the eau de parfum at home, and the small one in your bag for a refresh before dinner.

What I would skip: layering two different scents on the same day just because they are both in the cart. Pick one story per outing.

Pick the Story You Would Tell

I think the smartest way to shop this line is to ignore the notes for a minute and read the little descriptions. Whichever one makes you smile or roll your eyes in a good way is probably the one you will wear.

My rule of thumb: green and airy for weekdays, vanilla or saffron for evenings, and the mini spray for anything in between. Try one for a week before you add a second, and keep the mini for the days you forget.
