Fleece Jacket: Full-Zips, Pullovers and High-Pile Layers

Fleece Jacket: Full-Zips, Pullovers and High-Pile Layers

This fleece jacket edit moves from full-zips to pullovers and plush outer layers, with useful differences in pocket, collar and shape. I note what I would wear on a weekday and what I would check before choosing a size.

In 1981, Polartec invented Polarfleece, the first polar synthetic fleece, as a lighter, warmer, more breathable alternative to traditional wool. I love the useful plainness of that idea. A fleece jacket can be the piece you keep near the door, not the one you have to plan around.

That makes me judge these by silhouette and small details rather than by how outdoorsy they look. The Patagonia Better Sweater has a sweater-knit face and three zip pockets, so I would wear it over a tee with straight jeans and keep keys in the sleeve pocket. The North Face Yumiori Off Peak is brown double-sided brushed fleece with a contrasting tan chest pocket, a lovely bit of color blocking that asks for simple layers underneath.

If you want something softer than the technical fleeces, The Upside Sol and the Varley Ruiko are zip-through layers that sit comfortably over a tee, and the Rains fleece zip jacket keeps a dark, clean line. Sweaty Betty's plush ribbed zip-up is the coziest of the group, and I would wear it open over a simple tank.

Columbia Benton Springs in Phoenix Blue is the brighter, clean-lined option, with zip hand pockets; I can see it over a gray sweatshirt on a cold walk. Patagonia R1 Air Hoody in Wool White gives the layer a patterned jacquard texture and integrated hood, while the Cotopaxi Abrazo makes black less plain with its contrast chest pocket. For a closer technical line, the Patagonia R1 Jacket pairs textured fleece with articulated elbows. Before I choose, I check that the zipper sits flat over the layer I plan to wear beneath it and that my arms can reach forward without pulling the hem.

This first group is the one I reach for most, so it got the most new pieces. On's Ascent Fleece Jacket, Vuori's Alpine Jacket and Beyond Yoga's Polarflex are the sporty ones, and Sandy Liang's Dawson Jacket and EAVES's Aila Sport Jacket have the most personality. SKIMS, MOTHER and Rag & Bone go soft with teddy and sherpa zip-ups, while American Vintage's Hoktown, P.E Nation's Lennon and SNDYS's Tatum are the plush end. Varley's Klaudia, P.E Nation's Alumni, Alp N Rock's Tahoe hoodie, FP Movement's Hit The Slopes, WellBeing + BeingWell's Benson, Lovers and Friends' Emmie, MORE TO COME's Indira and SAM.'s Gemma round it out.

A pullover with a plan

An opening at the neck changes how a pullover layers, so I try it over the shirt I actually wear. The Free Fly Ashridge half-zip in Cosmic Bloom Plum has a rose-pink pattern, chest pocket and relaxed shoulders. I would pair it with dark straight-leg pants and leave the rest quiet.

The Patagonia Textured Fleece Pullover keeps the shape simple with its black pebbled surface and pouch pocket. Cotopaxi Tempa in Chalk brings fluorescent zipper trim and a bicep pocket, a useful detail without turning the whole thing into a costume. Mountain Hardwear Microchill stays black and light, with raglan sleeves that allow full range of motion.

Halfdays Pieper is a navy half-zip with a hood, Barbour's Fawne is a tan sherpa quarter zip, and the two FP Movement Mountain High half-zips, one light blue and one printed, bring color. Patagonia Micro D and Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T pullovers and The North Face Cedar Trail quarter-zip keep it simple for days when I just want a clean neckline.

For a more shaped fit, L.L.Bean Bean's Sweater Fleece Pullover has princess seams and a snap placket; I would wear it over a thin turtleneck with relaxed denim. Patagonia R1 Pullover in Thin Ice gives the technical option a pale mint color and a zip chest pocket. prAna Stretch Zion 1/2-Snap in Beach Pebble makes a softer cream half-snap with drop-in pockets.

What I would skip: a collar that rubs my chin when the zip is closed, especially if I want to wear the pullover under a shell. I raise both arms, sit, then reach forward; the hem should stay where I want it and the shoulder seams should not tug.

Room for the pile

Pile has its own volume, so I check the shoulder line before deciding a jacket feels cozy. Marmot Upward in Light Mauve has a brushed high-pile surface and zip hand pockets, while Save The Duck Sayaka in Rainy Beige mixes its soft pile with corduroy trim and a snap front. I would keep the rest of the outfit spare, perhaps a fine knit and straight dark jeans.

Columbia Fire Side II in icy blue keeps the outline clean with a raised collar and zip pockets. Patagonia Classic Retro-X brings a cream half-inch pile, olive chest patch and handwarmer pockets, an easy counterpoint to a dark trouser. The North Face Extreme Pile 2 in mottled green adds a chest pocket and cinchable hem, so I would check that the waist does not bunch when I sit.

Fjallraven Vardag in black has a two-layer teddy surface with a soft jersey backing; it reads neat enough for a weekday. The North Face Osito Lux takes teal pile and finishes it with rib-knit collar, cuffs and hem. STIO Rawlins in ivory has tan zipper trim and chest seams, a more outdoorsy note that looks good with worn-in denim. With any of these, I try it over the layer I mean to wear and reach across my body. If the shoulders pull or the sleeves swallow my hands, the softness is not enough.

SAM.'s Sherpa Denver Jacket and BEACH RIOT's Leona treat pile like outerwear, and LAMARQUE's Helsa and the 4th & Reckless Zara zip-up are the lighter, everyday versions.

How I would choose a layer

I would decide how I move through the day first. For desk-to-walk, I would reach for a full-zip; if I want a little neck coverage, I would try a half- or quarter-zip; if the fleece is my outer layer, I would look at the higher pile. Then I would pick the color that works with the coat and shoes already in rotation.

Next I put on the shirt I plan to wear underneath, close the zipper, and reach forward. If the shoulder seam pulls, the hem hikes, or the pockets land awkwardly, I keep looking. The useful fleece is the one that already knows its place by the door. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Velvet jacket and Sherpa Jacket.
