GCDS Tops: The Pieces Worth the Price Today

GCDS Tops: The Pieces Worth the Price Today

GCDS is the Milan label two brothers started with a run of sweatshirts and a very good sense of humor. I like how it pairs Italian craft with streetwear jokes, so this edit is the tops, trousers and layers I would pick first.

From a small first run to a design studio

I know GCDS for its collision of graphic streetwear and punchline energy, but the beginning was much smaller. Brothers Giuliano and Giordano Calza started the label in 2015, and the first launch was a run of 100 sweatshirts sold online. Giuliano came to it by a winding road, from political science in Naples to Chinese studies in Shanghai and luxury marketing in Milan, before building the label with his brother. That route feels close to the brand's instinct: take a familiar reference and make it brighter, stranger and very much its own.

The name now stands for Giuliano Calza Design Studio, and the brand's About page lines up Italian quality, a street-style soul, irony and tradition side by side. I see the same tension in its mix of lounge pieces, track tailoring and party shapes. An irreverent family voice with real Italian craft behind it gives the clothes room to play without losing their center. I went deeper on a related idea in Mimchik Tops: Pieces Worth Their Price.

Tops with a graphic pulse

If I wanted one sharp GCDS detail to change the mood of an outfit, these are where I would start. The Ribbed Snap Long Sleeve Top and Rib Logo Lounge Tank Top are the quieter way into the label's sporty side, while the Logo Tape Mini Top makes the graphic streak easier to spot. The Rainbow Lame' Sita Drops Bra is the color-first choice, and I would wear it under an open button-down or a slouchy jacket.

My move is to pair a logo or shine detail with plain denim or a straight trouser, never another print. That keeps the outfit readable and leaves the top to do the talking.

Trousers between sport and polish

GCDS keeps its trousers from getting too serious. The Triacetate Pinstripe Jogger sounds tailored and sporty in one breath, and the Logo Tape Straight Sweatpant leans into easy logo dressing. I would use the Cupro Tailoring Capri Trousers to sharpen a cropped knit, and the Zippers Faded Faux Leather Skinny Pant to give a soft tee a night-out edge.

Picture her crossing Milan in the forest jogger with a clean tank and a small shoulder bag, the stripe doing all the talking. Before choosing a cropped or skinny cut, I would hold the hem up against the shoes I wear most. A small change in the break moves these from sporty to polished.

One-piece dressing and a louder layer

This is where GCDS switches registers without losing its wink. The Rib Logo Lounge Dress and Rib Logo Lounge Tank Dress turn the label's lounge shorthand into one-piece outfits, and the Bandeau Knot Dress is the one I would save for a dinner or a party. For layers, the Triacetate Pinstripe Track Jacket and Color Block Track Jacket bring two different moods, the Logo Tape Nylon Bomber adds another graphic voice, and the Corduroy Overshirt softens things. The Celluloid Knit Tie is a small, playful extra.

I would wear one dress under one outer layer. What I would skip is doubling up on jackets, because the cleanest outfits come from one strong proportion with the rest left to breathe.

Streetwear with room to play

From a first run of 100 sweatshirts to a wider Italian design studio, GCDS has held on to the tension between streetwear and careful construction. I like the permission that gives the clothes: a logo tank can sit beside a tailored capri, a soft dress can take a louder jacket, and nobody has to pretend those ideas are opposites. I would choose one piece for the part of my wardrobe that needs a little more humor. Although I suspect one will turn into three.
