Greasy Hair by Noon: The Dry Shampoos and Scalp Fixes That Actually Help

Greasy hair is rarely a sign that you are doing something wrong, and more often a sign that your scalp is simply busy. The fix is good dry shampoo for the in-between days plus a little scalp care so the oil does not win by lunchtime. These twelve cover sprays, powders and the scalp products that make each wash last longer.

I have fine, straight hair that looks freshly washed for about six hours, which means I have spent more of my life thinking about greasy hair than I would like to admit. For a long time the only answer was washing every morning, which dried out my ends and never really fixed the roots. The shift for me, and for a lot of people, came when dry shampoo stopped being a chalky emergency product and turned into something you could use on purpose. The newer sprays and powders absorb oil without leaving a white cast, add a bit of grip and volume, and can stretch a blowout another day or two. Scalp care also moved into the mainstream, which helps with the other half of the problem: an oily scalp often needs a proper cleanse and gentle exfoliation, not just more washing. The first grid is the sprays I reach for on day two, from Living Proof, Ouai, Moroccanoil and Hair by Sam McKnight.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day, Ouai Melrose Place Dry Shampoo, Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo, Hair by Sam McKnight Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo, Crown Affair Dry Shampoo Powder, Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-powder, Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk, Sachajuan Dry Shampoo Mousse, Roz Salt Scalp Scrub, Bumble and bumble Seaweed Oil Control Primer, R+Co Bleu Retroactive Dry Shampoo and Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo.

For non-aerosol people

If you would rather skip the aerosol can, powders are the answer, and they are often easier to control at the roots. Crown Affair's powder comes with its own brush and is made for oily hair specifically, Bumble and bumble's Prêt-à-powder is the old reliable of the group, and Klorane's oat milk version is one of the gentlest here. Sachajuan's Dry Shampoo Mousse is the odd one out, a foam you work into the roots. Apply at night if you can, so the product has hours to absorb oil while you sleep, then brush it through in the morning.

Scalp care, and what I would skip

Dry shampoo handles the symptom, and the last grid goes after the cause. Roz's Salt Scalp Scrub clears buildup before a wash, and Bumble and bumble's Seaweed primer is an oil-control styling primer made for fine hair. R+Co Bleu's Retroactive and Oribe's Gold Lust are the backup sprays I keep for nights out, when I want volume as well as a fresher root. What I would skip is using dry shampoo for four or five days in a row without a real wash. Product and oil build up on the scalp, it starts to itch, and the roots end up looking flatter than when you started. Use it to stretch a wash by a day or two, then shampoo properly.

Busy scalp, calm hair

An oily scalp is not a character flaw, it is just a scalp doing its job a little too well. The routine that works for me is simple: a real wash with a clarifying shampoo when I need it, dry shampoo in between, and a scalp scrub once a week. Pick the format you like from the first two grids and add one thing from the third. Your hair will look fresh for longer than lunch.
