Home, for the Colder Months

Home, for the Colder Months

Lamps, candlesticks, vessels and one good throw, for when it's dark by six.

When It Gets Dark at Six

When the clocks change I start caring a lot more about my apartment. It gets dark earlier, we stay in more, and suddenly the overhead light feels like an interrogation.

This edit is about fixing that with low light, warm colors and a few good things for the table.

Table Lamps

Rule one of fall at home: turn off the ceiling light. Two or three table lamps at different heights will make any room feel warmer. Look for colored shades, stoneware bases and one cordless lamp you can carry to wherever dinner is.

Candlesticks

Candles at dinner on a weeknight are not too much, I promise. Mix heights and materials, like iron, carved wood and painted ceramic, and keep a box of tapers in the drawer.

Vessels for Branches

Flowers are lovely, but branches last. A few stems from the market in a heavy vase is the easiest fall decorating there is. Colored glass and matte ceramic both do the job.

One Good Throw

You only need one, but it should be a good one. Something heavy enough to matter, in a color you like looking at, left on the sofa as if you use it. You will.

The Table, Set

Having people over in fall is mostly soup, bread and something to pour from. A deep serving bowl, a patterned pitcher and a few amber glasses make it feel like an occasion without much effort.

Where I'd Start

Start with the lamps. Everything else looks better once the lighting is right.
