The New Rules of Denim for 2026

The New Rules of Denim for 2026

Denim has split into two camps, rigid heavy jeans that look like they could survive anything and softer, slouchier shapes that sit low on the hip. Both are a reaction against the stretchy skinny jean that defined the previous decade, and both are now fully mainstream. This edit follows Moda Operandi's denim guide, covering the jeans themselves and what to wear with them.

Jeans

Rigid denim is the headline. Baggy, straight, wide and bootcut shapes all appear, but almost everything here is non-stretch, which gives jeans the structure that made vintage pairs so coveted in the first place.

Tops

The tops are simple on purpose, mostly tanks, turtlenecks and a few stripes. When the jeans are this strong, the top should step back.

Coats and jackets

A boxy cotton jacket or a suede blazer is the natural partner for heavy denim. It keeps the outfit grown-up without making it formal.

Shoes

Sandals, slingbacks, loafers and one pair of sneakers show how flexible a good jean has become. A pointed shoe under a wide leg is the look that keeps coming up.

Accessories

Belts, sunglasses and scarves do a lot of the styling work, and a wide leather belt with a sculpted gold buckle does the most. A good belt matters more now that rises are dropping.

Jewelry

Gold earrings and a single stone necklace keep denim looking polished. It is the jewelry approach of people who wear jeans five days a week.

Bags

Pony hair, raffia and shearling add texture next to plain denim. The bags are small and tactile rather than logo-led.

Knitwear

Cashmere and argyle knits make the case for denim as a cold-weather uniform. The argyle revival has been one of the quieter stories of the season.

Our honest take

If you change one thing about how you wear denim this year, make it a rigid pair. It feels stiff for a week and then becomes the best pair of jeans you own. Everything else here is the supporting cast.
