Zebra print, worn like a neutral. Dresses, skirts, calf hair bags, boots, belts and scarves, with honest notes on which stripes earn their keep.
How to Wear Zebra Print This Fall

I have a folder on my phone that is just zebra. Screenshots of a skirt on a stranger in a coffee line, a calf hair bag hanging off a chair, a boot peeking out from under wide black pants. At some point the folder stopped being a joke and started being a plan.
Here is what I've figured out. Zebra is really black and white with a pulse. That means it behaves like a neutral, as long as everything around it stays calm. Pair a zebra skirt with a charcoal knit and flat loafers and it reads almost serious. Pair it with a red lip and a chunky gold earring and it gets fun without tipping into costume.
The easiest way in is one printed piece below the waist. The St. Agni Savannah wrap skirt is silk, moves beautifully and dresses down with a gray crewneck. The Attico wide-leg pants are cotton, so they feel like jeans with an opinion. If you want the full commitment, Simkhai's Sonoma calf hair mini dress is the one I keep zooming in on. Wear it with opaque black tights and let it do all the talking.

A zebra bag is the lowest-risk way to wear this print, and honestly the one you'll use most. It sits happily on a black coat, a camel coat or a denim jacket, and it fixes a plain outfit in about four seconds.
Calf hair is the texture to look for. It has that soft, slightly glossy nap that catches the light when you move, and it looks richer than flat printed leather. Khaite's Lotus mini tote and Simona shoulder bag are the splurges here, both trimmed in leather so the print has a clean edge. For something smaller, the DeMellier Vancouver clutch tucks under an arm at dinner. Veronica Beard's Ziger bag is the friendliest price in the grid at $375.
One rule I stick to: if the bag is zebra, the shoes are not. Let one thing be loud.
If you're buying a bag you'll carry most days, pick a structured shape with leather trim, which keeps the print looking polished. A slouchy, all-hair bag is more fun but shows wear sooner, so save it for your second zebra purchase, if there ever is one.

Then there are the small things, which is where I'd start if you're nervous. A zebra belt through the loops of dark jeans. A silk scarf knotted at the neck of a navy coat. A pair of loafers under straight pants, just a flash of stripe when you walk.
The Wales Bonner Dakar loafers are the ones I'd wear hardest, because calf hair on a flat shoe is practical in a way a stiletto never is. Jamie Haller's Kitty pump is the evening version, with a stripe that looks painted on. Isabel Marant's Alecia scarf is cashmere and wool, so it earns its place on cold mornings. The Nili Lotan silk scarf is lighter and ties smaller.
Belts are the sleeper hit. The Déhanche Hollyhock belt costs $350 and changes every black outfit you already own.

Our honest take
Zebra is having a moment, which is exactly why I'd be careful. Trend pieces with a huge print and cheap-feeling fabric date fast. What I'd skip: matching zebra sets from head to toe, and printed synthetics that go shiny under light. Both look like a costume version of the real thing.
What lasts is calf hair, silk and good cotton, in a print scale you'd still wear in five years. A belt or a scarf gets you there for a few hundred dollars. A bag gets worn every week. The dress is a joy, but only buy it if you can already name three places you'd wear it.
If you take one thing away, it's this: treat zebra as a neutral with personality. One piece per outfit, everything else quiet, and you'll keep reaching for it long after the zebra folder on your phone has been deleted.
