Hypnotic Poison Dior and the Vanilla Scents That Followed It

Hypnotic Poison Dior is a 1998 vanilla and bitter almond perfume that still smells like nothing else on the shelf. This edit starts with the Poison family, then follows the almond and vanilla fragrances that grew up in its shadow.

Hypnotic Poison Dior arrived in 1998, four years after Tendre Poison and thirteen years after the original Poison, and it did not try to smell like either. Perfumer Annick Menardo built it around four accords instead of the usual top, middle and base pyramid: bitter almond with caraway, sambac jasmine, moss with jacaranda wood, and vanilla with musk. It was also the first Dior fragrance released after John Galliano came in to revive the fashion side of the house, and it was meant to match his theatrical streak. I like that history because it explains the smell. This is a vanilla perfume with a bitter almond edge, closer to marzipan and warm skin than to a bakery. The 1985 original was a dense tuberose statement by Edouard Flechier, and Hypnotic Poison kept the jasmine as a thread back to it while swapping the drama for something creamier. Below is the Poison family first, then the almond and vanilla scents that clearly learned from it.

Almond, sugar and cashmere

Grid two is where I go when I want almond and vanilla without the theater. L'Occitane began in 1976, when 23-year-old Olivier Baussan distilled rosemary in Haute-Provence, and its Almond Hair & Body Fragrance Mist is the lightest thing here: bergamot, almond and vanilla in a nonsticky spray that is meant for hair as well as skin. Kayali came later, in 2018, from Mona Kattan in Dubai, and the number in Vanilla | 28 refers to the formulation rounds it took to get right. It is vanilla orchid, tonka and amber woods, so it reads dense and warm. Phlur's Vanilla Skin leans on sugar crystals and cashmere wood, which makes it feel closer to a sweater than a dessert. Burberry's Goddess Amber Vanilla Eau de Parfum Intense is the most dressed up, with lavender, maple syrup and a roasted vanilla. If you want a gourmand perfume with a story behind the number, start with Kayali, and layer the almond mist underneath it on your hair.

Mists, caramel and a little brown sugar

Grid three is the sweeter, softer end of the shelf. L'Occitane's Amande Creme Brulee mist goes for roasted almond, vanilla milk and praline, which is the closest thing to Hypnotic Poison's almond in spirit, only lighter. The Vanilla + Almond Milk body and hair mist adds coconut and comes in a 98 percent natural-origin formula with an airy spray. Summer Fridays released its first eau de parfum in March 2026, and Sunlit Vanilla grew out of the vanilla in its Lip Butter Balm, with bergamot on top, caramel in the middle and tonka and amber underneath. By Rosie Jane's Dulce, released in September 2022, was Rosie Jane Johnston's attempt at a very literal vanilla, inspired by her first year in Los Angeles in 1996, with a little hinoki wood to keep it from going syrupy. What I would skip is judging any of these from the first ten seconds on a paper strip. Sugar and caramel are loud at the start and settle into something much quieter on skin, so wear one on your wrist through lunch before you decide.

How I would wear the whole family

I wear this family in layers of volume. The mists go on in the morning, generously, on hair and shoulders, because that is what they are for. The eau de parfums get one or two sprays at the pulse points, and Hypnotic Poison gets the evening, when its bitter almond and jasmine have room to sit next to something with a little attitude. If you already love one vanilla on this page, try the almond one next; it is the note that makes the Dior different from everything that followed it. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Oakcha, the Viral Vanilla and Dior Fahrenheit.
