J'adore Dior, the Amphora Bottle and the Gold Bath

The Dior J'adore amphora bottle dates to the 1999 launch of J'adore, the floral that still defines the house. I go through the J'adore perfumes, hair mist and body care, and the gold bath idea behind the bottle.

1999, an Amphora and a Gold Bath

J'adore launched in 1999, and Olfastory calls it the feminine pillar of Dior. It came about at the instigation of Sabina Belli, then the house's international perfume products director, and was composed by Calice Becker alongside Ann Gottlieb. The glass amphora bottle was designed by Hervé van der Straeten, a former jeweler. Olfastory describes it as shaped like a woman's body, with golden neck rings, and adds that some say it is a nod to Maasai necklaces.

The campaigns made it a character. The first features the model Carmen Kass sinking into a bath of gold, and Charlize Theron became the face in 2004. The photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino has shot J'adore campaigns since 1999.

If you search j'adore dior, you are probably asking which one to buy, because there are several. The original is a dewy, fruity jasmine and rose, the one most people picture. Later versions go brighter, richer or lighter, and there is even body care in the same scent.

The first grid is J'adore, from the perfumes to a hair mist and body products. The second grid is other jasmine eau de parfums. My tip: if you are new to the line, test the original and the Parfum d'Eau on skin side by side.

J'adore Perfumes, Hair Mist and Body Care

Every Dior perfume here starts from the original. J'adore Eau de Parfum has ylang ylang, Damascus rose and jasmine. Its description talks of a dream flower, dewy, fruity and velvety, with a pair of jasmines (Grandiflorum and Sambac) and a lily of the valley accord. It is the most reviewed one here.

The flankers shift the mood. J'adore L'Or is the one Francis Kurkdjian created, a solar floral that mixes honeyed centifolia rose with jasmine grandiflorum, plus coconut and mango. LVMH says it was his first J'adore composition, and that he went to the heart of the original floral bouquet. J'adore Intense is richer, with a honeyed ylang-ylang. J'adore Parfum d'Eau is a water-based formula with neroli, jasmine and magnolia, and the brand says it is as intense as an eau de parfum. Eau Lumière is the lightest, an eau de toilette with blood orange and neroli opening onto Damascus rose.

Then there are the pieces that carry the scent beyond the bottle. The Hair Mist adds the J'adore floral to hair. Les Adorables Golden Gel is a shimmery body gel with 24-karat-gold particles and a refreshing texture, and the Les Adorables Body Cream is a hydrating cream with jasmine wax and cotton extract. Layering the cream and the Eau de Parfum is the easiest way to make the scent last longer on skin.

What I would skip: the golden gel under a fitted white outfit. It is made to shimmer, and it can leave sparkle on fabric.

Eight Jasmine Perfumes to Compare

Jasmine means different things depending on what sits around it. Carolina Herrera Good Girl is bright jasmine and creamy tuberose over roasted tonka bean, with almond and cocoa. Good Girl Jasmine Absolute is the deeper, darker version, with blackcurrant, toffee and smoky tonka. Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb is a warmer and louder floral with rose, jasmine and patchouli, in a refillable grenade bottle.

Mugler Alien Goddess takes jasmine from India and puts it over bourbon vanilla and bright bergamot, so it is the sweetest of the group. Chloé L'Eau de Parfum Lumineuse mixes jasmine sambac, rose and Madagascan vanilla, a floral gourmand that reads solar and soft.

If you want jasmine that feels lighter, there are three. Prada Paradoxe Virtual Flower is a musky floral with bergamot and a jasmine accord, a second-skin scent. Marc Jacobs Daisy Wild adds banana blossom and vetiver to jasmine for a fruity, wildflower feel. Henry Rose Flora Carnivora is jasmine with tuberose and orange blossom in a genderless, minimal bottle.

I would hand the Prada or the Henry Rose to someone who finds J'adore too sweet. The Good Girl and the Alien go to someone who wants more warmth than the Dior original.

What I would skip: Flowerbomb or Alien Goddess if you wear perfume to a small office. Both fill a room quickly, and the lighter picks leave a gentler trail.

One Jasmine, Many Moods

I think the original J'adore is the right place to begin, because it is the least sweet and the most floral of the family. If you want something airier, try Parfum d'Eau or Eau Lumière. If you want a richer, golden version, try L'Or or Intense. Whichever you choose, I would spray it on warm skin at the neck and wrists, then leave it alone and see how it smells after a few hours. Perfume changes on skin, and that is where you will know. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Cartier Panthère Watch and Van Cleef Bracelet.
