Kenneth Cole: The Shoe Truck That Made an Entrance

Kenneth Cole: The Shoe Truck That Made an Entrance

Kenneth Cole shoes, from the 1982 trailer-showroom origin to a fall-minded edit of boots, heels, flats, sneakers, bags and coats. I like how Cole's sharp product instincts and public-minded advertising share the same New York nerve.

A shoe story with a point of view

In 1982, Kenneth Cole wanted to show shoes at a trade show in midtown Manhattan without taking a room at the Hilton. He borrowed a friend's tractor-trailer, then changed the company name to Kenneth Cole Productions and applied for a permit to shoot The Birth of a Shoe Company. The trailer opened for business on December 2, and the account says he sold 40,000 pairs in fewer than three days. It is a wonderfully literal introduction to a shoe label: make an entrance, then give people a reason to stay.

That origin fits a brand where footwear and public messages shared the same advertising space. Cole used company ads to bring up AIDS, homelessness, gun control and abortion. His 1985 AIDS-awareness campaign, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, featured Christie Brinkley and Paulina Porizkova, among other models. In a separate early ad, fashion models and children appeared barefoot under the line, "For the future of our children." The shoes were never the whole argument. I like that tension in a fall wardrobe, too: an everyday pair can have a distinct line without needing to shout.

The Rida Stretch Boot in chocolate micro keeps its tall shaft close to the leg; the Blindy Micro Suede Boot in greige is quieter, with a low-profile heel. The Nico Leather Boot has an almond toe and polished gold-tone buckle, while the Joey Distressed Leather Belted Riding Boot is a darker, relaxed counterpoint.

Then there is the Brisbane Croco Suede Tall Shaft Boot in olive embossed suede, with its pointed toe and sculpted heel, or the black embossed Udaya and Odelle booties for a shorter line. The Quincy Suede Heel Ankle Boot brings in gold-tone hardware. I would check shaft height against the hem you have in mind, then decide whether the outfit needs a tall boot or a clean ankle break.

Slingbacks, straps, and pointed pumps

Heel height is only half the question; toe shape and strap placement decide whether a pump reads spare or busy. I would let the shoe's lines do the talking, then keep the rest of the outfit plain.

Kenneth Cole's company advertising often took on issues beyond clothes, including AIDS, homelessness, gun control and abortion. That directness makes a clean shape feel more in keeping with the label than a pump trying to be five things at once.

Perfect Leather Heel in black eel has a pointed toe and discreet forefoot perforation. The Marbella Perforated Suede Slingback Heel adds sky blue and a 1.8-inch heel. The Linxie Patent High Vamp Pump is glossy black with a low kitten heel, while the Leyla Strappy Leather Heel uses an ecru multi-strap upper, ankle buckle and gold-tone hardware.

The Arita Woven Leather Open Toe Heel lets the woven straps carry the detail; the Liona Embossed Snake Heel adds a T-strap and adjustable buckle. I would pair Marbella with straight dark trousers, or let Leyla stand out against a simple black dress. For a buying check, look at where the slingback strap sits and compare heel height before choosing a full day or an evening plan. What I would skip: if the outfit already has texture or jewelry, I would leave the snake print and studs for another night.

Flats with bows, buckles, and velvet

An almond toe and an adjustable strap make a flat easy to place beside straight-leg trousers; the useful test is whether the line looks balanced at the instep. Vogue reported that Cole joined amfAR's board in 1987, two years after the first AIDS campaign, and was its board chairman by the 2017 story. The public message and the name on the shoe have long belonged to the same conversation.

The Carriah Calf Hair Bow Tie Ballet Flat in tiger haircalf is the most graphic choice, while the Garland Embossed Flat is quieter in chocolate suede with a high vamp. The Jasper Leather Ballet Flat has a silver-tone buckle strap; the Tamarra Croco Mesh Ballet Flat turns the Mary Jane shape into chocolate textile mesh with gold-tone hardware. I would keep either under a cropped trouser or let the black-and-natural raffia of the Jasper Raffia Ballet Flat show against a dark skirt.

The Verona Velvet T-Strap Mary Jane Flat offers a softer black texture, and the Nala Suede Point Toe Flat gives the outfit a sharper finish. The Magnolia Leather Ballet Flat has an adjustable strap and the product listing recommends sizing down half a size. I would check the strap position and toe shape before deciding, especially if the flat will sit under a wide hem. What I would skip: if the outfit already has two focal points, I would choose the quieter Jasper and save the tiger haircalf for another look.

Sneakers and sandals, lace-up to slide

Think about the last stop of the day: a sneaker can sit under a long coat, while a sandal can carry the small detail on its own. In 2016, UNAIDS appointed Cole an International Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of his commitment to the AIDS response. The brand story has always let footwear sit beside a wider point of view.

The Alma Leather Sneaker keeps to black leather and a contrast swoosh detail. The Cameron Jewel Jogger Slip-On Sneaker brings all-over jewels to a black slip-on, while the white Leather Kam Sneaker has a padded collar and triple-layer cushioning. For something with more color, the Sam Leather Sneaker pairs gray and white with multicolor details and a gold accent stripe at the heel.

On the sandal side, the Paria Embossed Knot Detail Sandal uses a white-and-black lizard print and an embossed knot across the vamp. Anna is a black leather open-toe slingback with a square toe and adjustable buckle; Lotus adds a woven T-strap and wood platform, and Deardra keeps to a double-buckle suede slide with studs. I would wear the simpler lace-up with a long skirt and save the straps for a cropped hem. Check the buckle placement and platform height in the product details, then compare how much hardware the rest of the outfit already has.

Satchels, totes, and weather coats

A bag's dimensions matter more than its name when it has to live beside a coat sleeve. The Crosby Large Satchel Handbag in taupe is structured, with turn-lock hardware, top handles and a detachable shoulder strap. The Riverside Leather Extra-Large Oversized Tote Handbag goes the opposite way in plum, with a crinkle finish, drawcord sides and a removable zip pouch; its listed measurements are 23 by 14 by 5 inches.

The black Crosby Shoulder Bag is a cleaner leather option with a zipper closure. The Highline Small Top Handle Haircalf Handbag is compact in natural and black, with a back slip pocket. I would compare those shapes against what I would carry on an ordinary weekday, then leave room for a sleeve or scarf if the bag is going to sit under outerwear.

The Textured Coat with Hoodie Bib makes pink tailoring feel less formal, while the Rib Sleeve Mixed Media Coat pairs a nutmeg wool-blend body with wide rib-knit sleeves. The Double Face Wool Blend Hooded Coat is light gray with a roomy fixed hood; the black Faux Leather Trench Coat with Faux Fur Collar has a removable belt and plush faux-fur collar. Check the listed coat length against the hem of your dress or trousers. What I would skip: a bulky bag with a large collar if both shapes will compete at the shoulder. I would let one of them take the lead.

A fall edit with an entrance

I would choose the shoe shape first, then decide whether the rest of the outfit needs a clean line, a bit of texture or a sharper buckle. The collection moves from boots to flats and sneakers, then into bags and coats, but I would keep the through-line simple: one detail worth noticing, and enough room around it. I would rather choose one texture or bit of hardware than ask every piece to compete.

The original showroom arrived on wheels. I like a brand story that still knows how to make an entrance, then lets the clothes do the talking. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Pikolinos and Designer Shoe Sizing.
