Kitsch Hair Perfume, Scent by Scent, and What to Layer With It

Kitsch Hair Perfume, Scent by Scent, and What to Layer With It

Kitsch hair perfume grew out of a brand that started with handmade hair ties. Here are the scents I would pick, the Kitsch hair products that go under them, and hair perfumes from other brands.

Kitsch started in 2010 with handmade hair ties. Founder Cassandra Thurswell built it with no outside funding, and the brand's own site sums up the idea this way: everyday beauty should be anything but ordinary. What began as a small collection of hair accessories grew into a hair care brand, and in early March 2025 Kitsch debuted a collection of four hair perfumes. Thurswell told Glossy she was inspired by Gen Z, who see fragrance as an extension of their personal identity.

That is the context I keep in mind with Kitsch hair perfume. It is a brand that came from hair, so the pitch is about hair first. Each Hair & Body Perfume Mist comes in a 50 mL bottle, and the brand says it uses patented odor-eliminating technology that neutralizes odors at the source.

The scents below are a good tour of the styles. Soft Santal is a vanilla almond and cherry blossom mist with pear, magnolia, violet and sandalwood. Oak & Amber is woody and smoky, described as a golden evening by the fire. Pistachio Latte is a nutty gourmand with pistachio, coconut and warm coffee. Caramel Cream is caramel and whipped vanilla with orange zest on top, and Warm Sugar is cotton candy with spun sugar and pink grapefruit. Tart Cherry is juicy cherry with florals and vanilla, Tula Rose is rose, freesia and creamy vanilla, and Rustic Vanilla is the simplest, going by its name alone.

My test: spray a single pump on the ends of dry hair, then decide if you want a second.

Big numbers collage titled KITSCH HAIR PERFUME, six products numbered one to six with each product set beside its number: Kitsch Hair and Body Perfume Mist in Rustic Vanilla, Kitsch Hair and Body Perfume Mist in Soft Santal, Kitsch Hair and Body Perfume Mist in Oak & Amber, Kitsch Hair and Body Perfume Mist in Pistachio Latte, Kitsch Hair and Body Perfume Mist in Sheer Violet and Gisou Wildflower Honey Infused Hair Perfume

The rest of the scents, and what goes under them

Next come the rest of the Kitsch scents, then the products I would wear underneath. Amber Shores is a woody aquatic mist with sea salt, amber and driftwood, and it is the one for anyone who does not want sweet. Beachy Gelato goes the other way, with lime, passion fruit, violet, strawberry blossom and pink sugar. Coastal Sorbet has passion fruit, peach, mango and warm musk. Sheer Violet is raspberry, violet and soft musk, which the brand compares to sweet tea in a French bakery. Whoville Cookies is the bakery one of the bunch, going by its name, with the same odor-eliminating molecules.

Then the practical part. Kitsch Glass Hair Shine Serum is a lightweight serum for frizz and flyaways, formulated with Phytovie Defense for thermal protection. The Moisturizing Argan Milk Leave-In Conditioner is a spray that detangles wet and dry hair. The Priming Argan Oil Heat Protectant and Styling Mist is clinically tested for 450 degrees F thermal protection, according to the brand.

How I would layer: leave-in on damp hair, heat protectant before styling, a little serum on the ends, then the perfume last, from arm's length.

What I would skip: spraying a perfume mist onto hair that is still soaking wet. It is meant as a finishing step.

Hair perfumes from other brands

Kitsch is not alone in this space, and these are the other hair perfumes I would smell next. Gisou Wildflower Honey Infused Hair Perfume is made with Mirsalehi honey and argan oil, and it is the most hair-care-minded one here. Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 62 is a pistachio, salted caramel and vanilla mist meant for hair, body and lingerie, so it sits close to Kitsch Pistachio Latte. OUAI St. Barts Hair and Body Mist has dragon fruit, orange blossom, tuberose and musk. Moroccanoil Fragrance Originale is spicy amber with magnolia and argan oil.

Kérastase Gloss Absolu Hair Perfume is the dressier option, with citrus, rose and vanilla. Crown Affair The Signature Scent is bergamot, green tea and sandalwood, and the brand says it layers over other fragrance. Emi Jay Aura Mist in Angel Wings is amber and light musk, and dae Dream Veil is sparkling citrus, orange blossom and warm vanilla.

A pairing tip: if you like a Kitsch gourmand, try one of the fresher mists here on the days you want less sweetness.

What I would skip: layering two strong gourmands in one go. Pistachio caramel on top of cotton candy gets loud fast.

Choosing your scent

Pick by mood first. Woody and smoky if you want calm, like Oak & Amber or Soft Santal. Sweet if you want comfort, like Caramel Cream or Warm Sugar. Floral and fruity if you want light, like Sheer Violet or Tula Rose. Keep a fresh one from another brand nearby for contrast. Spray at arm's length onto dry hair, shake it out, and let the scent settle before you add more. If you like to layer, start with the lightest scent and build from there. If a mist smells too sweet on your hair, try it on your clothes or scarf instead, or switch to a woody or aquatic bottle. Small spritzes add up, so keep it gentle and let each scent have a minute to show you how it wears.
