Lattafa Perfumes, Khamrah and the Warm Scents in the Same Family

Lattafa perfumes come from a Dubai house rooted in Arabian perfumery, and Khamrah is the warm, spiced one everyone asks about. Here it is next to the vanilla, oud and tobacco scents that share its mood.

Lattafa began in the UAE in the 1980s, founded by Sheikh Shahid Ahmad and Shoaib Iqbal to make fragrances rooted in Arabian perfumery. Ahmad arrived in Dubai from Pakistan and worked for 13 years in his uncle's perfume shop, as he told Gulf News in 2021, and the house calls itself a family business now in its third generation, selling beyond the Middle East since 1992 and in more than 120 countries today. The name comes from the Arabic latif and lateefa, which the house links to softness. Of all the Lattafa perfumes, Khamrah, launched in 2022, is the one that crossed over: bergamot, cinnamon and nutmeg on top, dates, praline and tuberose in the heart, and vanilla, tonka, myrrh and amberwood underneath. It shares cinnamon and warmth with Kilian Hennessy's Angels' Share, named for the cognac that evaporates from barrels, a smell he remembers from childhood in his family's cellars. Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille was part of the first Private Blend line in 2007, and Miu Miu's Miutine Intense adds blackberry to bourbon vanilla.

Lattafa perfumes

Vanilla, four ways

Mona Kattan founded Kayali in 2018, and her interest in layering perfumes is what started the line; Vanilla 28 was one of the four launch scents. Maison Margiela's Replica line, launched in 2012, recreates one remembered moment per bottle, labeled like a garment care tag, and Afternoon Delight smells of vanilla, madeleine and sandalwood. Armani's I Will pairs vanilla with lavender and leather for a drier take. Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty, which puts 1 percent of everything it sells toward its Rare Impact Fund for mental health, makes Rare with vanilla and caramel. Try two of these on different wrists to see which way you lean.

Oud, tobacco and amber, and the skip

Fabbrica Della Musa, from Barbara Adelmann and the perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani, draws on their travels, and Oud Tuareg is an extrait for anyone who loves Khamrah's depth. Tom Ford's Oud Minerale adds marine notes and ambergris to the wood. Aliénor Massenet made Jazz Club after the Village Vanguard in the West Village, where she lived from 1995 to 2001, with rum, tobacco leaf and pink pepper. Prada's Paradigme Le Parfum wraps amber and vanilla around geranium. What I would skip is several sprays of any of these in a small office. Two is plenty; they project.

Wearing warm scents

Spray on pulse points after moisturizing, since scent lasts longer on hydrated skin. Warm scents shine in cool weather and at night. Test on skin, not paper, and wait an hour before deciding. Keep bottles away from heat and light. If a scent gives you a headache, move it to evenings or pass it on. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Lattafa Khamrah Qahwa and the Best Coffee Perfumes and Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male, the Le Male Family and the Warm Scents Beside It. If you would rather browse by family than by brand, I explained how to shop perfume by scent family, starting with four simple groups.
