Lattafa Perfumes is a family-run Dubai house that has gone from a shop counter to a name people trade recommendations about. Here are the bottles for her, the ones for him and for sharing, and a shelf of amber and oud perfumes from other houses.
Lattafa Perfumes, the Dubai Family Shop Behind Half My Group Chat

Every time I hear someone ask what they are wearing, a surprising number of answers begin with the same name. Lattafa Perfumes is a house out of Dubai, founded in the 1980s by Sheikh Shahid Ahmad and Shoaib Iqbal, though some accounts put the date at 1980. It is family-run and now in its third generation, which is a rare thing to be able to say about a fragrance company that fits in a phone feed.
The story I like most is Sheikh Shahid's. He arrived in Dubai from Pakistan and worked for thirteen years in his uncle's perfume shop before building his own name. That is a long apprenticeship, and I think you can smell it: these are perfumes made by people who learned the craft behind a counter, watching customers decide what they liked. The name itself comes from the Arabic latif, meaning gentle, and lateefa, meaning pleasant, which is a modest thing to call a house that makes such rich bottles.
Three here are made for her. Yara is the one I hear recommended first, and I would smell it before anything else. Yara Moi is a flanker of it, a little fruitier and brighter. Fakhar for women is the third, and the one I would try if the first two feel too obvious.
Try them on skin, not paper, and let them sit for an hour before you decide.

For him, and for anyone who borrows
The second grid is where the brand shows how wide it goes. Khamrah is the one I hear named most often in conversation. Asad reads, by its name and its look, as the bolder bottle, and Fakhar for men is the cousin of the women's version, which is a nice detail if you and a partner want to share a scent. Ana Abiyedh Rouge is worn by women and men alike, and Badee Al Oud For Glory carries oud right in the title. Qaed Al Fursan finishes the row.
What I like about the Lattafa lineup is that it does not split neatly into men's and women's. People pick bottles by weight and warmth. If you want something dense, resinous and long-lasting, look at the oud in the name. If you want something you can wear to a meeting without a fuss, pick the softer ones from the first grid and ignore what the box says.
There is also a practical point. A house that has been at this for decades has had time to learn what people actually wear, and that is a real comfort when you are ordering scent you cannot smell first.
Spray once on your wrist, once on the back of your neck, and walk around for a few hours. If someone leans in and asks, you have found a good one.
Amber and oud, other houses
Sometimes you want to see what the same mood looks like somewhere else. This last group is warm, sweet and resinous, and it makes a good comparison shelf.
Burberry's Goddess Amber Vanilla Eau de Parfum Intense with maple syrup and amber is the most dessert-like. Mugler's Alien with cashmere wood and amber is the strangest, in a good way, glowing and a little otherworldly. KAYALI's Oudgasm Chocolate Oud is the one that goes closest to Lattafa's territory, rich and dark. Marc Jacobs Beauty's Perfect Absolute with fig and amber is lighter and greener. LoveShackFancy's Just a Girl combines vanilla and amber for something cozier and prettier, and Maison Louis Marie's No.13 Nouvelle Vague is the quiet, sophisticated one of the bunch.
I would smell these next to a Lattafa bottle rather than instead of one. Compare how long each lasts, how far it travels from your skin, and what it smells like at the end of the day. Those three answers tell you more than any description.
What I would skip: layering an amber perfume with a second heavy oud one on the same day. You end up with a wall of scent and nothing you can pick out. I would also skip spraying straight onto delicate fabrics, where a rich scent can hang on for a long time.

How I would shop this shelf
Here is how I would work through the shelf. Start with one bottle from the first grid if you like soft and sweet, or one from the second if you like depth. Wear it for three days before deciding. Perfume changes with weather and mood, and day one is never the real verdict.
Keep the amber and oud bottles from other houses for evenings. Put a light spray on pulse points after a shower, and give it time to settle before you leave the house.
A sample or a small bottle is a sensible way in, because fragrance is personal and skin chemistry does the last edit. Keep a note on your phone of what you tried, what you wore it with and how many people mentioned it. After a month you will have a very clear picture of your own taste, which is more useful than any list, mine included. And if a bottle turns out not to be for you, give it to a friend who loves it, since that is half the fun of this brand anyway. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Lattafa Angham and the Fruity, Musky, Vanilla Perfumes I Pair With It and How To Shop Perfume By Scent Family Instead Of By Note.
