Mens Varsity Jackets, Striped Polos and Canvas Sneakers

Mens Varsity Jackets, Striped Polos and Canvas Sneakers

Old-school sportswear is back, only this time the varsity jackets, striped polos and canvas sneakers are cut like grown-up clothes. I went through the labels with a real athletic or street history, from Golden Bear's San Francisco waterfront to visvim's Tokyo label, and kept what still looks good out of the gym. Read on for what to buy first and what to leave on the rail.

Varsity and Track Jackets

In 1986 Run-DMC released My Adidas, the first single from Raising Hell, and then got an adidas executive into their Madison Square Garden show on 19 July and had the crowd hold their sneakers up. What followed is described as the first endorsement agreement between a musical act and an athletic company, and sportswear has been looping back ever since. Lyst's Q2 2026 Index says sport has become one of the industry's more powerful discovery engines, and it names Willy Chavarria's adidas collaboration among the hottest products. British GQ's August piece says you cannot walk around a UK neighborhood without seeing a 20-something in a football jersey, and it traces that back to the Blokecore wave of 2022. Blokecore has since been declared over, which I find more interesting than its peak, because what is left is the part people kept. Start with the jacket. Golden Bear opened in San Francisco in 1922 making leather jackets for dockworkers, and its Albany varsity in wool and leather is the real thing in black. Aimé Leon Dore's gray Highlanders varsity is the downtown version. Wear either over a plain gray sweatshirt and straight jeans. What I would skip is the Blue Blue Japan ecru shawl-collar suit jacket if you want sportswear energy, because it is tailoring first and wants trousers, not a track top.

Collage of old-school sportswear: varsity jackets, striped polos, sweatshirts, cargo trousers and canvas sneakers

Sweatshirts, Sweatpants, Hoodies and Sweaters

Sweats only look sharp when the rest of the outfit behaves, so I keep the fit loose and the colors dull. AMI was founded in Paris in 2011 by Alexandre Mattiussi after roughly a decade at Dior, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs, and he has said he wanted to make clothes he would wear himself. The name means friend in French. His straight-leg gray jersey sweatpants look like something a friend would lend you, in a good way. Ralph Lauren's Purple Label started in 1994 with Savile Row as its reference, and the white cotton and cashmere drawstring sweatpants are the most tailored thing in this grid. Polo Ralph Lauren's MLB intarsia sweater in black does the baseball-dugout look without a jersey, and the Aimé Leon Dore half-zip in gray is the one I would wear on a plane. My pairing rule is one soft piece against one sharp one: a gray sweatshirt with pleated trousers, never with more sweats. What I would skip is the white Purple Label sweatpants for a park bench or a train seat, since pale cashmere blend wants an easier afternoon.

Polos and T-Shirts With a Little Attitude

Stripes are the loudest thing sportswear ever invented, and a good polo knows when to stop. Kapital comes from Kojima, Okayama, which Japan calls its denim capital, and Toshikiyo Hirata is known for boro and sashiko patchwork, so the BIG striped polo in red has a maker behind it who understands fabric. Drake's began in London in 1977 with three former Aquascutum employees, first scarves and then handmade ties, and its blue striped half-zip polo is the grown-up version of a rugby top. FRAME's striped polo in wool and cashmere is the quiet one for the office. For tees, Our Legacy started in Stockholm in 2005 printing T-shirts on the Nying family's vinyl printing equipment, so the black Ballon henley feels like a return to the label's roots. Add the A.PRESSE cotton and cashmere tee in white if you want a clean base, and the Neighborhood hockey tee in green if you want a shirt that starts the conversation. What I would skip is the Remi Relief distressed University tee under a blazer, because the print will always win that argument.

Cargos, Pleated Trousers and Jeans

The sweatpant has a more serious cousin, and it is a cargo. Cherry Los Angeles was founded in 2017 by friends Joseph Perez and David Levy, whose parents worked in clothing production, and the green paint-splattered ripstop cargos are made in LA and garment-dyed. FrizmWORKS, started in Seoul in 2010 by An Jong Hyuk, is known for wide-leg pants, which is why its green drawstring cargo hangs the way it does. Aimé Leon Dore's beige pleated trousers are the piece that makes a varsity jacket look intentional. For denim, Carhartt WIP began in 1994 as the European distributor of Carhartt, and its Aaron jean in blue is a straight workwear leg with no tricks. Acne Studios gave away 100 pairs of raw denim jeans to friends in 1997, and the ecru paint-splattered pair is a long way from that. AGOLDE's wide-leg Fusion is the one to try if you want a looser line. Pair one loud leg with a plain tee. What I would skip is the Neighborhood bead-embellished Savage jean under a varsity jacket, since the beading competes with the badge.

Sneakers, Hiking Boots and Everything Else on Your Feet

Shoes finish this look, and the best pairs here have a story. visvim was founded in Tokyo in 2000 by Hiroki Nakamura, a former Burton Snowboards designer, who created the FBT shoe in 2001 by putting a moccasin upper on a sneaker midsole. The black Skagway canvas sneaker is the pair I would wear daily. Golden Goose started in 2000 near Venice and introduced the Super-Star in 2007 with one star point deliberately shortened, so the distressed brown leather pair is meant to look worn from day one. Wales Bonner's Paris trainer in brown suede is the dressy choice. For boots, Timberland's leather hiking boot is a good dark brown, and Diemme's Cornaro Due Gomma comes from Montebelluna, a Veneto town known for mountain boots. Sebago, founded in Maine in 1946, made the Docksides a 1980s US college trend, so its beige Koala suede derby has some history. Mr P.'s black penny loafers are the neat option with a polo. What I would skip is the Gucci Drip canvas sneaker when the outfit already has a logo tee.

Wear One Loud Thing and Keep the Rest Quiet

The lesson of My Adidas is that nobody was dressed in head-to-toe sportswear. Run-DMC wore the sneakers, the tracksuit and the hat, and it worked because it was theirs. Today the risk is costume, so I treat old-school sportswear like seasoning. If you are building this from scratch, buy in this order: a varsity jacket first, then a heavy gray sweatshirt, a striped polo, one pair of wide cargos or straight jeans, and a canvas sneaker you do not worry about. That is a full outfit and it covers autumn. Add the track jacket when you want to look like you are heading somewhere and the hiking boots when it gets cold. Keep one thing loud, the jacket or the stripes or the sneaker, and let the rest sit in gray, navy and ecru. Blokecore may be over, but a good varsity jacket was never part of a trend. It will outlast the next three.

More Old-School Pieces, Top to Toe

The closing idea of this edit was to keep one thing loud, and this last rack is for choosing that one thing. For stripes, I would look at the Aimé Leon Dore Saint George track jacket, the Drake's striped polo and the Polo Ralph Lauren striped zip-up sweatshirt. For something quieter, the Sacai Chusen-dyed jersey tee and the AGOLDE Slater pleated trousers keep the outfit calm, while the Sacai and Levi's wide-leg belted jeans give you a bolder cut. On your feet, the Diemme Cornaro suede hiking boots suit cold days and the Golden Goose Ball Star sneakers suit the rest. What I would skip: the Sebago Askook boat shoes with heavy winter layers, since they sit better with lighter outfits. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Prada Sneakers Sit Where Sportswear And Nylon History Meet.

If you want to keep going, Mens Tweed Jackets and Textured Knits and Best Mens Sneakers pair well with this edit.
