Mock Neck Sweatshirt: The Collar That Sits Between Crew and Turtleneck

Mock Neck Sweatshirt: The Collar That Sits Between Crew and Turtleneck

A mock neck sweatshirt is the easy answer for days a crew feels too open and a turtleneck feels like too much. Here are pullovers, half zips and quarter zips, then the knit mock neck sweaters, with notes on how each one wears.

The collar between crew and turtleneck

A mock neck is a collar that stands up a little without folding over, lower and looser than a turtleneck. That is the whole idea. You get some height at the neck without the fold, which is why a mock neck sweatshirt sits so neatly under a coat and does not fight a necklace or a scarf.

The sweatshirt itself started on a football field. In 1920 Alabama quarterback Benjamin Russell Jr. asked his father's knitting company to make a thick cotton practice jersey to replace the itchy wool ones, and that jersey became the sweatshirt. The turtleneck is older, a late 19th century garment for polo players, which is why the British still call it a polo neck. Put the two together and you get a sporty piece with a collar that was never meant to be fussy.

What I want is the version that looks like a sweatshirt and behaves like a nice top. In the first group, the cotton ones are my starting point. Beach Riot has the Jaylyn Cotton Mock Neck Sweatshirt and FP Movement has A Cut Above Mock Neck Sweatshirt, and both read easy and slightly slouchy with straight jeans and a loafer. For a knit take on the same shape, the a.ren Brienne is an oversized pullover with a soft, tall collar, and Splendid's Winslow is the black one I would wear with leather trousers.

For something with more texture, look at the French terry pair. perfectwhitetee makes the Arden French Terry Mock Neck Sweatshirt, and And Now This adds a Snap Henley Fleece French Terry Mock Neck Sweatshirt, where the snaps give the neck a little detail. French terry has small loops on the inside, and fleece is brushed until those loops turn soft and lofty, so the terry ones feel lighter and the fleece ones warmer. Polo Ralph Lauren's Arctic Ribbed Mock Neck Long-Sleeve Fleece Pullover Sweatshirt sits on the fleece side.

The rest are the fashion-leaning and sporty picks. Jean Paul Gaultier has a mock-neck long-sleeve sweatshirt, and Rhone has the Dreamglow. The Ess Relaxed Mock Neck Crew Sweatshirt from Puma is the plainest of the lot, which is a compliment. Kenneth Cole's Traveling Rib pullover and the Ridge Tech Mock Neck Pullover from Marmot are the slim, sporty ones, and I would wear them under an open jacket. PARKE has two more easy ones, the Varsity Mock Neck Sweatshirt and the Martha's Vineyard Signature Mockneck, and Citizens of Humanity's Mirelle funnel neck sweatshirt and the Still Here Rec Pullover add a taller collar.

Half zip and quarter zip, sorted

A zipper changes the character of a pullover completely. The Guardian reports that the quarter-zip pullover was originally part of gym and ski wear in the 1930s, according to Prof Andrew Groves of the Westminster Menswear Archive. British Vogue noted that a camel-colored quarter-zip jumper turned up on the runway in December 2025, a nod to the quarter-zip movement spreading on social media. I like that a piece with a gym past is now something you can wear to dinner.

The practical joy of a zip is control. Open it to show a collarbone, close it all the way to get the high neck back, and leave it halfway when you are not sure. In this group, the half-zip from Tommy Hilfiger is the classic shape, and the quarter-zip fleece from Champion is the casual one that works with leggings and sneakers.

The sharper options come from Courrèges, which has two here: a zipped mock-neck top and a zipped mock-neck sweater. They are cleaner and more graphic, so I would wear them with tailored trousers and keep everything else quiet. DKNY Sport's Mock-Neck Half-Zip Stretch-Scuba top has a smooth, sleek surface, and the scuba name tells you it is not a traditional fleece. It suits a skirt and boots.

Then the colorful and the detailed. THE GREAT. has a Color Blocked Mock Neck Quarter Zip Top that does the styling for you, so jeans and nothing else is plenty. Lucky Brand's embroidered quarter-zip pullover has the embroidery to carry the front. The last piece is the 100% Cashmere Mock Neck Quarter Zip Striped Sweater, the dressiest zip here and the one I would wear under a blazer.

The newer arrivals fill in the rest of the range. Greyson's Soleil quarter zip and Varley's Hawley half zip are the clean, sporty ones, Vuori's Restore half zip is the easy gym-to-errands pick, and the Sporty & Rich NY crest quarter zip carries a little embroidery. FRAME's marled wool half zip, the Moncler JW Anderson ribbed-knit half zip and the Simkhai wool-cashmere quarter zip poncho top sit closer to the knits, while the Éterne and Les Tien cotton half zips are the relaxed ones. Still Here's Bear zip-up and the Source Unknown Konny zipped sweater round the group out.

A fitting-room test for any zip top: raise your arms and check that the hem does not ride up past your waistband, and zip it fully to make sure the collar stands instead of folding over.

The knit side of the collar

Now the knits. A mock neck sweater is the quiet one of the family, and it is the one I wear on days when a sweatshirt feels too casual but a shirt feels too stiff. The collar does the work, so you can skip the jewelry and let the texture speak.

Cable knits first. Polo Ralph Lauren and Gran Sasso both have a cable-knit mock-neck sweater, and they are a good study in contrast: the cable pattern is classic, and the mock neck keeps it from looking like a school jumper. Wear either with a pleated skirt or dark denim. Courrèges has a Reedition rib knit mockneck sweater, which is far more fitted and graphic, and the 100% Cashmere Mock Neck Cable Sweater is the softest-looking piece in this group.

Then the fashion shapes. The Frankie Shop's Rue padded-shoulder mock-neck sweater gives you a strong line at the shoulder, so I would pair it with slim trousers and keep the hair off the neck. The mock-neck ribbed-trim sweater from Toteme and the ribbed one from Sandro are the ones for tailoring, since the rib sits close and the collar stays tidy under a coat.

For color, I like the two wool pieces. Helmut Lang's Gray Wool Mock-Neck Sweater is a calm neutral that goes with everything in my closet, and Jil Sander's Blue & Off-White Wool Mock-Neck Sweater brings a quiet pattern. The Cassidy Mock Neck Sweater from Splendid and the Eastport Cotton Mock Neck Sweater from Alex Mill are the easy, everyday knits, and the cotton one is the one I would reach for first.

The last part of the grid moves from knits to finer tops. Lela Rose's floral crepe top, Heirlome's Cora striped silk and Yasmin silk tops, the LAPOINTE ruched jersey, the DL1961 rib and Brandon Maxwell's Ellis stretch-silk top are the dressy ways to wear the collar, and Michael Kors Collection's funnel-neck cashmere sweater is the knit among them. The Courrèges jersey bodysuit, Khaite's Polly smocked silk-chiffon top, the Prada embroidered smocked top, Onia's linen smocked halter, the ALAÏA zipped denim shirt and the JW Anderson zipped tank top are wildcards that borrow the idea rather than the collar.

What I would skip: a mock neck under a heavy chunky scarf, or a very tight collar under a high-neck coat. You end up with a bulky pile at the throat and the collar loses its shape. Also skip stacking a patterned knit under a busy blazer; let one piece lead.

How to choose and how to wash

Choosing between these comes down to three small questions. Decide on a zip or no zip, a rib or a cable, and how much room you want through the body. If you love layering, go for the half zip. If you wear it alone, take the plain pullover with the cleanest collar.

Try them with the clothes you already own. A pullover with wide-leg jeans, a knit with a midi skirt, and a zip top under a trench all work. Check that the collar stands up when you turn your head and that the cuffs stay where you push them.

Care matters for how long the collar keeps its shape. Wash them inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, which keeps pilling down, and dry them flat rather than on a hanger, which stretches the shoulders and the collar. Do that and a good collar will last you for years.
