Moisturizer With SPF for Daily Wear, Sensitive Skin and Under Makeup

A moisturizer with SPF is the easiest sun habit I know, because it is one step instead of two. Here are the daily creams, the mineral formulas and the light fluids I would look at first.

The number on the front of every bottle has a known origin. In 1974, Austrian chemist Franz Greiter, the founder of Piz Buin, introduced the term sun protection factor, and SPF has been the shorthand ever since. Decades on, a moisturizer with SPF is the easiest way I know to make it a daily habit, because the step is already in your routine.

My bias is to pick the brand whose cream I would want anyway. Fenty Beauty Hydra Vizor is a done-in-one moisturizer in a refillable case, with SPF 30, niacinamide and a fresh desert melon scent. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 is fragrance-free and built around squalane. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench is a water-resistant SPF 45 with a hyaluronic acid complex, and Clinique Moisture Surge SPF 28 is a cloud-like cream that looks opaque going on, so you can see where you have applied it.

Estée Lauder DayWear SPF 15 and Shiseido Essential Energy SPF 20 are the lower numbers here, with the brands pointing to antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 adds peptides and squalane, and belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb SPF 45 is the lightweight Korean one.

A practical test: use enough. Most of these brands say to apply generously, about 15 minutes before sun exposure, and to reapply at least every two hours outdoors.

Mineral formulas for sensitive skin

Mineral sunscreen is a separate choice from the creams above, and it is the row I check first when skin is sensitive. Fenty Beauty Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30 uses zinc oxide and Fenty calls it great for sensitive skin. Kosas DreamBeam SPF 40 is silicone-free, with 21.7 percent non-nano zinc, and the Sunlit shade has a golden glow. Kosas says to give it three to five minutes to set before makeup.

Ultra Violette Future Screen SPF 50 is a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen serum with Japanese zinc, and the brand calls it suitable for sensitive skin. Kiehl's Better Screen Miner-all UV Serum SPF 50 uses nano zinc oxide that the brand says disperses smoothly to reduce white cast, with Cica Centella in the mix. Tower 28 SOS FaceGuard SPF 30 is a whipped non-nano zinc cream made for sensitive and acne-prone skin, and Caudalie Vinosun Protect SPF 50 is silicone-free with niacinamide and a natural glow finish.

Summer Fridays ShadeDrops SPF 50 is a mineral milk with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and INNBEAUTY PROJECT Mineral Sun Glow SPF 43 PA+++ gives a glow in two shades, which I would try in Fair-Light first.

Try this: shake the milk formulas well, then use the two-finger rule Summer Fridays describes.

What I would skip: a quick, thin swipe of any mineral formula. The SPF number on the bottle assumes a generous, even layer.

Light fluids that sit under makeup

These are for anyone who wears makeup and hates pilling. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ is a weightless, scentless gel that doubles as a primer, and the brand says to give it 30 seconds before makeup. Founder Holly Thaggard has said she built it to answer every excuse people have for skipping daily SPF, and white cast was one common complaint. Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40 in Golden Hour is tinted, with a radiant finish, and goes on after moisturizer.

Shiseido Urban Environment Fresh-Moisture SPF 40 is a lightweight cream that can be worn alone or under makeup. Youth To The People Youthscreen SPF 60 is a no white cast cream, and Glow Recipe Dew Shield SPF 30 is a hydrating liquid aimed at no pilling and no greasiness. Beauty of Joseon Day Dew SPF 50 is a water-resistant cream with a dewy finish, and innisfree Invisible Barrier SPF 47 is a green tea serum the brand calls sensitive-skin friendly.

Ultra Violette Supreme Screen SPF 50 is a sunscreen, moisturizer and primer in one cream, with squalane and plant-based Pentavitin.

What I would skip: rushing straight from sunscreen to foundation. Give the layer a minute to set, and your base will sit better.

How I would choose and use one

Pick the texture you will use every morning, because the best SPF is the one you actually put on. Go for a daily cream if your skin runs dry, a mineral formula if it is sensitive, and a fluid or serum if foundation goes on after. Check the SPF number and the broad spectrum label on the bottle, then apply generously and reapply at least every two hours when you are outside. If you want a simple plan: one bottle by the sink for mornings, a second in your bag.
