Monday Carry

The work tote that fits the laptop and still looks good

Laptop tote bags for work in leather, nylon and quilted fabric, from structured black totes and zip top commuter bags to padded laptop totes in walnut and navy, plus what to check before you buy.

What a good laptop tote actually needs

A work bag has one job that a regular tote does not: it has to protect a laptop and still be comfortable at the end of the day.

I split this edit by how the bag is built. Structured leather bags hold their shape and look sharp in a meeting. Soft nylon and quilted bags forgive a heavy load and go on a train.

Structured leather work totes

Clean lines, open tops and sturdy handles in black, brown, olive and a dark brown woven style.

My fitting room test: load it with a laptop, a charger and a book, then lift it by the handles. If the base sags or the handles twist, it will not last the semester. What I would skip: a bag with no inside pocket, since the charger will disappear.

Soft nylon and quilted laptop totes

These are the ones for commuting: padded walnut and black totes, quilted shapes in cream and navy, a tan carryall and a few zip top styles with organized pockets.

What I check: the zipper and the shoulder drop. You should be able to carry it on the shoulder while wearing a puffer. Leave it if: a tote with no zip if you ever ride public transit.

How I would style a work tote

Pair it with trousers and a knit, or with jeans and a blazer. A matching color to your shoes is the easiest way to look put together.
