Nike Mind 001: The Brain-Scan Mule and the Slip-Ons Around It

Nike Mind 001: The Brain-Scan Mule and the Slip-Ons Around It

Nike Mind 001 is the mule Nike built around 22 foam nodes and brain imaging, and this edit sorts it alongside the Mind 002 sneaker, recovery slides and easy slip-on shoes. I say when I would reach for each one and what to check before you commit.

Nike says the Mind 001 and Mind 002 are its first neuroscience-based footwear, and that the platform behind them is a technology more than a decade in the making. Each shoe carries 22 independent foam nodes that move like little pistons under your foot, so you feel the ground more, not less. It came out of Nike's Mind Science Department, which studies athletes' brains in motion. I love that. A mule built on brain-scan data is a very particular kind of slipper.

I will say what I think about the Nike Mind 001. It looks odd on purpose, with a ridged shell and orange nubs underfoot, and that is the entire appeal. Nike describes the mule as easy-on, easy-off, which is how I wear it: by the door, at the gym bag, after a long day on my feet. A word on supply: it is limited, and Nike lists women's sizing of the Mind 001 now, though sizes sell out fast, so check the size you need.

The mules come in a lot of colors. The Black is the one that disappears under wide trousers, and the Light Bone is my pick for cream knits and gray sweatpants. The Cucumber Calm is a pale mint that looks fresh with white socks, and the Geode Teal is the deep, moody one for dark denim. The women's versions add a Palest Purple, a Tarp Green that works like an olive neutral, and a Black Hyper Crimson with red nubs. Then there is the Mind 002, the sneaker, which Nike says anchors the foot to the footbed. The Black Hyper Crimson has red accents, the Thunder Blue is navy, the Light Smoke Grey is the soft one, and the Phantom is off-white. Walk a hallway before you decide.

Slides built for the couch

Recovery shoes live or die by the footbed, so press your thumb into it and see how fast it springs back. A good slide should hold its shape and still feel soft, and the whole group here passes that test in a different way.

The ReactX Rejuven8 slides in Sail and in Arctic Orange are the closest cousins to the Mind pairs: molded foam, a ridged sidewall, and a sticky rubber outsole for grip. The Sail is clean and white, and I would wear it with a gray lounge set. The Arctic Orange is the loud one, and it works with all-black errands. The Calm Women's Mules in chalk are a single piece of contoured foam with side cutouts, close to a clog, and the textured footbed grips when wet. I can see them next to a pool or a sink.

The platform Calm slides add some height, and the Faux Fur version has a fuzzy strap that suits a wool coat and bare ankles. For something more padded, the Victori One has a wide strap with a pink swoosh, the Offcourt Duo has two soft straps, and the Offcourt Adjust has a hook-and-loop strap you can loosen when your feet swell after a flight.

What I would skip: the platform slides for long walks, since they are better for short hops. Check the strap against the top of your foot before you commit.

Slip-ons that stay on

Slip-on shoes only earn their keep if your heel stays put, so step in without using your hands and walk across the room. If the heel lifts, move on. These all promise easy entry, and a few of them do it with a little more thought than a plain mule.

The Rejuven8 Run in Black and the Rejuven8 Run SP in Black Sail are the closest to a sneaker, with a ridged sole and ventilation, and I would wear either with straight leg jeans. The ReactX Rejuven8 in Orange Pulse has ventilation holes and a ridged foam body, which makes it a good plane shoe. The Revolution 8 EasyOn in Pure Platinum is the real running option: a hands-free entry and a metallic swoosh, good for an early morning loop.

The Air Superfly Moc in Sea Glass is a soft green slip-on with Air cushioning and a gold swoosh, nice with a gray tracksuit. The Air Force 1 '07 EasyOn in white is a classic with a hands-free entry, and it is in unisex sizing, so check that the fit works for you. The SB Janoski+ Slip in Black Gum is suede, laceless and skate-ready. The Burrow SE slippers in metallic silver are for the house, with a fleece-like lining, so keep them there.

What I would skip: wearing the slippers out in the rain.

Easy slip-on Nike shoes

How I would pick a pair

I would start with the Nike Mind 001 and pick the color first. The Black or the Light Bone, if you want it to go with everything; the Geode Teal, if you want people to ask. Because supply is limited and sizes sell out fast, I would check your size now and not wait on a restock.

Then I would add one recovery slide for the bathroom floor and one clean slip-on sneaker for the days you leave the house. Try each on at the end of the day, when your feet are at their widest.

It is a shoe designed from the brain down. I will take any reason to slow down and feel the floor. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Pink Heels and Nike Shoes.
