Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick: From Liner to Family

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick: From Liner to Family

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lipstick began as a nude-pink liner shade in 2013 and grew into a whole family. This edit follows it from Matte Revolution and K.I.S.S.I.N.G to liners, glosses, balms and a liquid matte.

Pillow Talk was a backstage secret before it was a shade. Charlotte Tilbury spent about two decades as a makeup artist to clients like Kate Moss, and she has said she wanted to bottle a suits-all hue that mimics the rose of a blush on skin, the color she used to mix by hand. It reached shoppers in 2013 as a Lip Cheat liner, part of the brand's launch at Selfridges in London that September. The lipstick followed in 2017 as Matte Revolution, and in 2020 the family added Pillow Talk Medium and Pillow Talk Intense for warmer and deeper skin. Puig took a majority stake in the company in 2020, and Charlotte stayed on as Chief Creative Officer. That is a lot of history for one Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lipstick, but it explains why the edit below runs so wide. The first grid holds the lipsticks, two Matte Revolution and two K.I.S.S.I.N.G, and if you have ever wanted a nude pink lipstick that reads as your lips but better, start there.

Twelve boxes on a pale gray page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Hydrating Lipstick in Pillow Talk, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Hydrating Lipstick in Pillow Talk Medium, Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick in Pillow Talk Fair, Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick in Pillow Talk Deep, Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Long-Lasting Waterproof Lip Liner in Pillow Talk, Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Long-Lasting Waterproof Lip Liner in Pillow Talk Medium, Charlotte Tilbury Mini Pillow Talk Lipstick & Liner Set in Pillow Talk, Charlotte Tilbury Mini Pillow Talk Plumpgasm Lip Liner and Lip Gloss Set in Pillow Talk, Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Lip Bath Gloss in Pillow Talk, Charlotte Tilbury Hyaluronic Happikiss Lipstick Balm in Pillowtalk, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Blush Balm Sheer Lip Tint and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Matte Lip Blur Liquid Lipstick in Pillow Talk Medium Blur.

The liner comes first

Grid two is where the story began, with the liner. Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk is a pink nude and the Medium is a warm berry pink, and the brand describes the formula as velvety, transfer-proof and good for up to six hours without smudging or feathering. That makes it a waterproof lip liner you can wear alone, or with a gloss for a lighter finish. The two mini sets are the easiest way to see the system at work. One pairs a lipstick with the liner, and the other pairs the liner with the Big Lip Plumpgasm gloss for a plumper-looking, high-shine mouth. My tip is to line the lip, then fill the whole mouth in with the pencil before anything else goes on top. It gives the lipstick a base to grip. It also means the color still looks intentional when the lipstick wears off at lunch.

Every other way to wear it

The third grid is every other way to wear the same idea. Collagen Lip Bath is a high-shine gloss with marine collagen and peppermint extract for a cool, fresh feeling. Hyaluronic Happikiss is a lipstick balm, with the hydration of a balm and the color of a lipstick. The Blush Balm is a sheer three-in-one lipstick, balm and tint, for lips that look blushed from within. The Airbrush Flawless Matte Lip Blur in Pillow Talk Medium Blur is the liquid matte, with hyaluronic acid and a powder-blur finish that looks airbrushed. What I would skip is laying the Lip Blur over a thick balm. A liquid matte needs a clean, slightly dry lip to lay flat, so do the balm the night before and blot before the day begins. Then let the gloss and the tint be the soft, forgiving options they are.

The shade I would keep reaching for

One shade built a brand, and that is the part I find hard to look away from. Pillow Talk is the rare nude that suggests a flush instead of erasing it, which is why it has stretched from a liner into lipsticks, balms and glosses. If I had to hand a friend one thing from this edit, I would pick the lipstick in her undertone, add the liner, and let her decide about the rest. The family is big, but the idea is small and easy to wear.
