Closed toe platform pumps, loafer heels and Mary Janes for fall, plus how to pick a pair you can actually walk in.

Platform Heels: Closed-Toe Pumps, Loafer Heels and Mary Janes
Platform heels that give you height without the wobble
Why platform heels are back
Platform heels are the easiest way to add height without feeling like you are on stilts. The thick sole under the front of your foot lowers the angle of the heel, so a tall shoe feels closer to a mid height one.
The versions that look right this fall have a closed toe, a sturdy block heel and a platform that looks intentional, not clunky. They look great peeking out from under wide leg trousers, with straight jeans, or with a midi skirt and tights.
Below are the two shapes I would shop: classic pumps and loafer heels first, then Mary Janes and ankle straps for anyone who wants a little more hold.

Platform pumps and loafer heels
A plain platform pump is the one to start with. The black suede pair with a chunky block heel goes with trousers and jeans, and the glossy nude patent pump makes your legs look longer under a skirt. The black leather pump with a low platform is the most office friendly of the group, while the chestnut suede stiletto is the dressy pick for nights out.
If you love a loafer, the loafer heels give you the same polish with more lift. The burgundy pair with a stacked platform feels very fall, the black suede slingback loafer is softer, and the black box leather pair with gold hardware is the statement. The black slingback pump is the easiest to slip on.
My fitting room test: walk across the store twice. If your heel slips out, size down or pick a strap. What I would skip: very thin heels on a tall platform, which tip easily on sidewalks.

Platform Mary Janes and ankle straps
A strap across the foot makes a platform feel much more secure, and it is the most current look of the season. The oxblood patent Mary Jane and the tan leather pair with a buckle both look great with tights and a pleated skirt. The dark brown suede Mary Jane is softer and works with jeans.
For something dressier, the black velvet ankle strap and the black suede pair with a cap toe both read evening ready. The caramel leather ankle strap is the fall color pick, the croc embossed T strap adds texture, and the latte suede pair with tiny studs is the lightest option. The pointed toe ankle strap is the tallest here, and the crinkle patent pair is the easiest on your feet.
What I look for: a strap that sits flat and a heel at least as wide as your thumb. What I would skip: straps that dig in at the ankle bone, which only get worse by the end of the day.

How I would wear platform heels this fall
Start with one black pair, either a pump or a Mary Jane, and wear it with wide trousers so just the toe shows. Then add a brown or burgundy pair for jeans and skirts.
Break them in at home with socks for an evening first. Once they are comfortable, you will reach for them every time flats feel too casual.
If you want to keep going, Malone Souliers Heels and Loafers and Jewel Tone Heels And Boots pair well with this edit.
