Red, Blue and Yellow: Menswear Goes Primary

Red, Blue and Yellow: Menswear Goes Primary

Primary color is back in menswear, and GQ says red in particular is suddenly everywhere. This edit runs from shell jackets and a varsity jacket through linen shirts to striped tees, with a Mondrian-sized dose of blue, yellow and red in each. Read on for what to wear loud, what to keep quiet, and which pieces I would skip.

Shell Jackets, a Varsity and a Field Jacket

In 1930, Piet Mondrian painted 'Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow', a 45 by 45 centimeter square made at the request of the Zurich architect Alfred Roth, who donated it to the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1987. Mondrian dated the dedication on the back Paris, 30 January 1930. It is still the shortest argument for primary color I know: three hues, black lines, no apology. Menswear is finally catching up. GQ said on 24 July 2026 that men's clothes are slowly coming out of a color recession, with blue, yellow and red all over the shelves and red suddenly everywhere. Vogue's spring color report went further and called it a full-scale return, with color-blocking back as a styling idea. I like the shift because primaries are easy to read. You do not need a palette chart, only one loud piece and two quiet ones. Start with outerwear. Aimé Leon Dore, founded in 2014 by Teddy Santis in Queens, makes the blue Embroidered Shell Jacket and the red Ny Highlanders varsity, and both carry the brand's hip hop and basketball roots without shouting. TOTEME's red hooded shell is the calmer version. Wear any of them over gray or navy and leave the color on the outside. What I would skip is the Canada Goose Horizon rain shell if your commute is a dry subway ride, because it is made for weather you may never meet.

Collage of primary-color menswear: blue and red shell jackets, yellow cable-knit sweaters, blue linen and denim shirts and red striped T-shirts

Sweaters, Cardigans and Sweatshirts

Knitwear is where primary color is easiest to wear, because a sweater sits close to the face and a plain collar can sit under it. Stone Island was founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti in Ravarino, born from Tela Stella, a heavy-wash, resin-printed military-grade canvas, and the blue ribbed organic cotton zip-up is a sweater from a house that started with fabric experiments. The Beams Plus yellow cable-knit cotton sweater is my pick for yellow that does not shout. Beams Plus launched in 1999 to honor the golden era of American menswear, so the cable reads as campus rather than costume. For red, TOTEME's cable-knitted wool cardigan is the cleanest option, and Ghiaia Cashmere's red cotton and cashmere sweatshirt puts a loud color on a quiet idea. Davide Baroncini started that label at his kitchen table in California with cashmere sweaters only. Paul Smith's blue cashmere sweater is the plain one in the grid, from a designer who opened his first Nottingham shop in 1970 at about three by three meters with no windows. Pair any of these with gray trousers and nothing printed. What I would skip is the CELINE Rimbaud printed yellow sweatshirt over a patterned shirt, because two busy surfaces cancel each other out.

Shirts of Every Weave, From Linen to Denim

A primary shirt is the easiest way to try the trend, since you can button it under a navy jacket and nobody gasps. Charvet was founded in Paris in 1838 by Joseph-Christophe Charvet and is credited as the first shop dedicated to shirts, so its blue linen shirt comes with real credentials. Drake's blue linen shirt is the same idea with an English accent; the label started in London in 1977 with scarves. For denim, Kiton and Zegna both offer a blue denim shirt. Kiton was founded in 1968 by Ciro Paone in Arzano, outside Naples, and Zegna's wool mill dates to 1910 in Trivero, so these are denim shirts from tailoring houses and they sit best under a jacket. Kartik Research's yellow camp-collar printed linen shirt is the loudest here, from a New Delhi label founded in 2021 by Kartik Kumra that works with a network of about 50 craftsmen. Nili Lotan's red Travis flannel is the one for cooler days. Keep your trousers neutral and let the shirt carry the color. What I would skip is the Vilebrequin Caroubis red linen shirt in a cold, dark office, because linen belongs to warm light.

T-Shirts and Polos in Primary Colors

The T-shirt is where you can be most direct, because nothing else is competing. Sunspel was founded in 1860 by Thomas Hill, and in 1955 Peter Hill created the cotton mesh Q75 on disused lacemaking machines; the Riviera Polo built from it is the one Daniel Craig wore as Bond in Casino Royale. Its Riviera cotton-jersey T-shirt in navy is the quiet anchor of this grid. John Smedley has knitted at Lea Mills in Derbyshire since 1784, and its blue merino wool T-shirt with Bill Nighy is a fine-gauge answer to the cotton tee. Auralee launched in Tokyo in 2015 around original fabric development, which is why the red striped wool-jersey tee feels like a sweater in disguise. For polos, the A.PRESSE red wool polo comes from Kazuma Shigematsu's label, founded in 2021, and the Beams Plus yellow piqué polo is the sunny option. KAPITAL's blue striped tee is the one that suits an easy weekend. Wear one primary tee under an unbuttoned plain overshirt. What I would skip is the LOEWE yellow striped terry tee under a fitted jacket, because the texture will bunch at the shoulder.

Pick One Color and Commit

Mondrian's square gets its power from restraint: three primaries, used on purpose, and nothing else shouting. Treat your outfit the same way. Choose one primary as the focus, keep the rest in black, white, gray or navy, and stop. If you are buying in order, I would start with a blue or red jacket, because outerwear is the first thing anyone sees. Then add one sweater in a second primary, and keep the shirts and tees as your quiet lines. The yellow pieces go last, because yellow is the hardest to wear all the time and the easiest to enjoy in small doses. Wear red with navy, blue with gray, yellow with white. Once you have the order, the whole range of this edit lets you mix it up each season without ever looking like you got dressed from a paint box.

More Shirts, Knits and Tees to Mix In

Primary color works when the rest of the outfit stays calm, so this shelf is about the quiet lines you can wear it with. The four linen shirts are the core: the Kartik Research Pataudi checked linen, the Blue Blue Japan grandad-collar linen-chambray, the Ralph Lauren Purple label Clayburn checked linen and the Boglioli linen. For colder days, the two Canali sweaters, the wool and the striped wool and cashmere-blend, can layer under the Valstar Valstarino bomber or the Aimé Leon Dore leather-trimmed jacket. Then the LOEWE anagram-embroidered tee, the Ralph Lauren Purple label jersey tee and the Aimé Leon Dore merino polo cover the weekends. What I would skip: the Willy Chavarria Diablo printed sweatshirt on a day when you are already wearing a loud jacket, because one loud thing is plenty.
