A rust and cream outfit starts with one piece of each, such as a rust wool sweater with cream silk trousers. I put together four looks, from a cream top with a rust crochet skirt to a rust suede jacket over cream.

Rust and Cream Outfits to Try This Fall
The Aran sweater, from the islands off Ireland's west coast, was traditionally knit from báinín, wool left undyed in its natural cream color. Those sweaters became popular far beyond the islands in the early 1950s, and they are still the image most of us have of cream knitwear: thick, warm and a little rugged.
Cream is the softest way to wear rust. Rust is the fall color that looks like leaves and terracotta, and it can look heavy next to black or navy. Next to cream, it glows. The pairing feels relaxed and warm, like a weekend in the country.
A quick test: hold a rust sweater or bag against something cream you already own. If the rust looks bright and warm rather than muddy, you are ready for everything below.

Start With One Piece of Each
Start with leather, which is where rust looks richest. Liffner's Single Handle tote is a brick suede bucket bag with one strap, and Chloé's Azalean over-the-knee boots are tan leather with a shearling cuff at the top. For cream, Le Monde Beryl's Mica 80 ankle boots are white leather on a curved heel, and By Pariah's ring is a band of white marble set with a line of diamonds. One rust piece and one cream piece with jeans is enough.
A Rust Sweater, Cream Trousers
Sanderlak's wool sweater is listed as brown but looks rust, a fitted crewneck. The Row's Ardyn wide-leg pants are cream hammered silk that drapes and moves. The soft cream bottom makes the rust top look warm. Paris Texas' Dallas 40 ankle boots are tan suede with a western shape, and Agnelle's Olga gloves are tan leather with a small button at the wrist.
How to wear it: keep the sweater short and untucked so the drape of the trousers starts right at the hip.
A Cream Top, a Rust Crochet Skirt
Sharon Wauchob's Anita T-shirt is ecru satin with a scarf tie at the neck, and Haight's Sheila mini skirt is an open rust crochet knit. Silky top and textured skirt look good together. Khaite's Clive 35 ankle boots are camel suede with a western toe, and Mateo's earrings are gold with a pearl and a small topaz. Add tights for a colder day.
The Rust Dress, a Cream Coat
Zimmermann's Aster maxi dress is rust mesh with a scarf-print panel across the body. Loulou de Saison's Rafe coat is ivory wool and cashmere with a plush collar, and it turns the dress into something for October. Gabriela Hearst's Clayton 50 ankle boots are white croc-effect leather on a low heel, and Versace's medium shoulder bag is tan calf leather with a structured shape.
What I would skip: a dark shoe. White boots keep the outfit light, so the rust dress and cream coat stay the story.
A Rust Suede Jacket Over Cream
TWP's suede jacket is listed as brown but looks rust, cut like a shirt with front pockets. Under it, Kallmeyer's Dani shirt is beige cotton poplin, and Abadia's Elodie midi skirt is cream duchess satin with soft pleats. The cream base makes the jacket glow. Savette's Soft Symmetry bag is light brown leather with a top handle.
Keep It Warm
Rust and cream are a gentle pairing that always looks warm. Choose rusts that lean orange-brown, like terracotta or brick, and creams that lean ivory rather than bright white. Use rust for suede, leather and knits, and cream for silk and wool. If you only try one look, start with the rust sweater and cream trousers. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Rust and Black Outfits to Try This Fall and Rust and Pink Outfits to Try This Fall.
