Rust and Pink Outfits to Try This Fall

Rust and Pink Outfits to Try This Fall

Rust and pink is the warmest surprise of fall, a pairing that looks like terracotta and roses. These five outfits put rust suede, cashmere, cotton and wool with pale pink knits, faille and lace. Keep the pink warm and give rust the leather and tailoring.

In 1876, to welcome the Prince of Wales, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II had the public buildings and houses inside Jaipur's walled city painted a terracotta pink, which is how it came to be called the Pink City. That shade is the whole idea of this edit: a pink with some rust already in it.

Rust and pink sound like an odd couple until you see them together. Rust is warm and earthy, pink is light and a little sweet, and side by side they look like a desert at sunset (or a terracotta pot with roses in it). The trick is warmth: a peachy or dusty pink works far better than a cool, blue one.

A quick test: hold a pale pink knit against a cognac bag or boot. If the pink looks warmer rather than chalky, the two are meant to be.

Pink for Your Head, Rust for Everything Else

The pink pieces here go near your face: Lisa Yang's Eivor beanie is a chunky pale pink cashmere rib, and Valentino Garavani's lace scarf is a peachy pink you can tie at the neck like a bandana. The rust goes everywhere else. Polo Ralph Lauren's tote is cognac suede with a slouchy shape, and Dries Van Noten's penny loafers are glossy rust-brown leather. Any one of them with a cream sweater is a start.

Rust and pink, like terracotta and roses.

A Pink Cardigan With Suede Trousers

&Daughter's Ava cardigan is a pale pink wool V-neck, plain and soft, and Stouls' Bugsy trousers are wide-leg suede in a deep rust. The softness of one and the swagger of the other is the point. Herbert Levine's Easy Does It boots are flat rust suede with a zip, and Christian Louboutin's Bettina tote is tan leather, big and plain. How to wear it: tuck the cardigan into the waistband so the suede gets the attention.

A Rust Cardigan, Pale Pink Trousers

Le Kasha's Bresil cardigan is ribbed rust cashmere with patch pockets, and Gucci's slim trousers are pale pink silk-blend faille, which is the unexpected part. Pink on the bottom half reads more relaxed than you would think. Simkhai's Dean slip-ons are rust croc-effect loafers with the backs cut off, and DeMellier's Siena bag is tan suede with a small gold lock. What I would skip: a pink top as well. Rust on top keeps it grounded.

The Pink Knit Dress, a Rust Trench

Khaite's Seberg dress is pale pink merino with a square neck and a hem that dips at one side, and it is quietly the best thing here. Dôen's Wolfe trench goes over it, double-breasted and belted in a rust-brown cotton blend. Proenza Schouler's Uma boots are tan leather on a curved low heel, and Polo Ralph Lauren's crescent bag is rust suede trimmed in black leather. Wear the trench open so the pink shows all the way down.

Rust Tailoring, a Pink Cable Knit

Another Tomorrow's blazer and Allude's wide-leg pants are both rust-brown wool, so together they read as a soft suit. Haikure's Sey sweater goes under it in a pale pink alpaca cable knit, slim and close, and it is the only pink in the outfit. Loewe's Pebble flats are tan suede with a small gathered toe. This is the outfit for days when you want to look put together without looking corporate.

Keep the Pink Warm

The reason rust and pink can look odd is temperature. Cool, blue pinks fight rust, while peachy, dusty and pale warm pinks melt right into it. Let rust take the leather and the tailoring, meaning bags, boots, coats and trousers, and give pink the knits and silks. If you already own a cognac bag, a pale pink sweater is all you need to try this.
