Marcel Mauss wrote in 1925 that every gift creates an obligation, and the small ones carry that weight lightly. This edit covers belts and beanies, candles and barware, and trays and fragrance for the home. Read on for what to buy first and what is better left to someone else.
Small Gifts for Men That Don't Feel Small

Belts, Hats, Socks and Pocket Squares
In 1925 Marcel Mauss published his Essai sur le don, later translated as The Gift, arguing that giving is never as free as it looks. Every gift carries three obligations: to give, to receive and to give something back. I think about that every December, because the small gift is the one that lets you play the game without the awkwardness. Esquire's 2025 stocking-stuffer guide put it neatly, saying that sometimes it is the smallest gifts that make the biggest impression, and it pitched little luxuries and tiny upgrades for men. This edit takes that seriously. The first grid is wearable: things a man will use the week he opens them. Anderson's makes belts only, in Parma, and the family-run company named itself after the Savile Row tailor Anderson and Sheppard, so the 2.5cm woven leather belt in brown is a gift with a pedigree. The William Lockie ribbed cashmere beanie in burgundy comes from a Hawick house that set up production in 1874, and it suits nearly anyone with a coat. Pair either with whatever the recipient already wears. What I would skip is the Gucci logo-jacquard socks in brown for someone who dresses quietly, because the pattern is the point and they may never wear it.

Candles, Notebooks and Things for the Bar
Trudon is the grown-up version of the scented candle. Claude Trudon founded the house in Paris in 1643, it supplied the court of Louis XIV, and it is regarded as the world's oldest candlemaker still active, so the Gabriel in dark green carries some history into a living room. Montblanc, founded in Hamburg in 1906, gave its Meisterstück pens a nib engraved 4810 for the height of Mont Blanc in metres, and the Extreme 3.0 149 leather notebook is the paper side of that same desk. Serapian, founded in Milan in 1928, is the softer notebook, a large cachemire leather one in navy. For drinks, L'Objet began in 2005 with Elad Yifrach, and its Prism cocktail shaker and martini glasses are the pieces to give someone who already owns a good bottle. L'Atelier du Vin's Soft Machine corkscrew was patented in 2006 and removes a cork in a single movement, which I find a good detail for anyone who hosts. My test is simple: would the person use it within a week. What I would skip is the Christofle silver-plated chopsticks for a man who never cooks Asian food at home, as they will sit in a drawer.

The last grid is for the house. LOEWE Perfumes is where Jonathan Anderson, creative director since 2013, took the fragrance line and gave it block-shaped flasks and botanical names like Cypress Balls and Orange Blossom. I would give the Tomato Leaves incense set or the Cucumber home fragrance to someone who has everything, since neither is a candle and both smell like a garden. The Conran Shop opened on Fulham Road in 1973, and Terence Conran's belief, per the brand, was that great design should be available to everyone, which is a fair description of the Istria oak tray and the oak fruit bowl in brown. La DoubleJ, started by J.J. Martin in Milan, brings maximalist print to the table with painted porcelain snack bowls in white and gold. Soho Home's Pangbourne rattan tray in sand is a pleasant base for all of it. Set a candle and a bowl on one of the trays and you have a finished present. What I would skip is the Conran Wardour earthenware candlesticks in burgundy if the recipient has no dining table, since they only work on a proper one.

What You Give Back
Mauss would say the gift never ends at the unwrapping, and that is the right way to shop. The best small gift sets off a small reply, a drink poured from the new shaker or a thank-you text about the belt. If you are buying for several people, work in this order. Start with something wearable and unfussy for the friend who is hard to read, like the Anderson's belt or a Lockie scarf. Move to the bar cart or desk for the host, and save the home fragrance for the people who already have the rest. Esquire's point about little luxuries lands because small objects get used, and a used object keeps the giver in mind. Wrap them plainly and add a handwritten line. Avoid the large, over-engineered present when a candle will do. And give the thing you would want back: a good glass, a good pen, a belt you can wear for years.
More Small Gifts for the Desk, the Bar and the Wardrobe
A small gift should get used, and this last rack is built around things that sit on a desk or go in a pocket. For the person who works at a desk, Ralph Lauren Home has the Brennan letter rack and the Brennan leather and teak catchall, Serapian a leather notebook, and Smythson a Panama cross-grain diary with pencil and a trinket tray. For someone who likes a drink, the L'Atelier Du Vin corkscrew and champagne stopper set is the obvious one. Anderson's and Mr P. both make a leather belt, and the Montblanc grained card case is an easy present for a man who likes things tidy. What I would skip: the Mr P. knitted silk tie for anyone who never wears one.
