The Best Body Wash Turns a Regular Shower Into Five Good Minutes

The best body wash does more than get you clean: it can exfoliate, protect a dry skin barrier or make a regular shower feel like a small ritual. Body care has borrowed a lot from skincare, so acids, niacinamide and lipid-rich oils now show up in the shower too. These twelve are split into exfoliating, gentle and scent-led washes.

For most of my life, body wash was whatever smelled nice in the drugstore and came in a bottle big enough to last. Then skincare moved below the neck, and the shower got interesting. The same acids, niacinamide and barrier-friendly oils that people had been putting on their faces started showing up in body washes, and brands began treating the body as skin that deserves the same care. At the same time, fragrance houses and old apothecaries made scent a real reason to choose one wash over another. The best body wash for you depends on what your skin is asking for. Bumpy or rough skin tends to do well with a gentle exfoliant, dry or sensitive skin wants something rich and mild, and if your skin is happy, you can simply choose by scent. That is the whole logic of this edit. The first grid is the exfoliators: Rare Beauty's konjac jelly wash, Kosas's AHA and enzyme formula, Amika's Shower Thoughts with AHA and Sol de Janeiro's Bom Dia Bright.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Rare Beauty Find Comfort Body Wash, Kosas Good Body Skin Body Wash, Amika Shower Thoughts Body Wash, Sol de Janeiro Bom Dia Bright Body Wash, Ouai St. Barts Body Wash, Nécessaire The Body Wash, Augustinus Bader The Body Cleanser, Corpus Body Wash, goop Beauty Black Pepper + Ginger, Commune Seymour Body Wash, Santa Maria Novella Rosa Novella Bath Gel and Sidia Soaked: Body Wash.

Gentle washes for dry skin

If your skin feels tight after a shower, the problem is often the wash, and this grid is the fix. Ouai's St. Barts Gentle Body Wash is soft and easy, Nécessaire's eucalyptus wash adds lipid-rich oils and niacinamide, Augustinus Bader's Body Cleanser comes from the brand named for the German stem cell scientist, and Corpus rounds out the group. Keep the water warm rather than hot, which does more for dry skin than any product. Then pat dry and moisturize while skin is still slightly damp. It takes thirty extra seconds and makes a real difference by the end of winter.

Washes for scent people, and what I would skip

The last grid is for people who choose a wash by how the bathroom smells afterward. goop Beauty's Black Pepper and Ginger wash is warm and grounding, Commune's Seymour comes with a reusable pump, Santa Maria Novella's Rosa Novella comes from the Florentine pharmacy with roots in the thirteenth century, and Sidia's Soaked rounds it out. What I would skip is using an exfoliating wash every day on dry or sensitive skin. Acids work, but daily use can leave skin raw, especially in winter. Two or three times a week is plenty, with a gentle wash on the other days.

Five minutes, twice a day

The shower is one of the few places most people get a few minutes alone, and it seems a shame to waste them on something that smells like nothing and dries you out. Pick an exfoliating wash for a few nights a week, a gentle one for everyday and a scent you love for the mornings that need it. Then enjoy the steam. It is a small ritual that asks very little.
