The Best Dry Shampoo for Every Hair Color, From Sprays to Powders and Foam

The best dry shampoo depends on your hair color, your scalp and how much you mind white residue. Here are clear sprays, tinted formulas and non-aerosol powders, a mist and a foam.

Dry shampoo is older than most people think. Before sprays there was Minipoo, a powder made with fuller's earth. Klorane says it developed the first dry shampoo on the market in 1971, intended for new mothers in hospitals, and Batiste launched a spray in the UK in 1975, which American stylists reportedly packed into their suitcases. The best dry shampoo now does its job without the chalky white cast those early ones left behind. Amika, founded in Brooklyn in 2007 by industry outsiders and named for the Esperanto word for friend, makes Perk Up, a talc-free spray and the one I reach for most. Living Proof came out of an MIT lab in 2005, and PhD removes oil, sweat and odor. Drybar's Detox is the super-absorbent option from Alli Webb's blowout bars, and K18, founded in San Francisco by Suveen Sahib and Britta Cox, makes AirWash to cut oil and odor without buildup. Spray from a distance, wait a minute, then massage it in.

Tinted formulas

Tinted formulas solve the residue problem at the root. Moroccanoil, which started when Carmen Tal discovered argan oil after a bad color job, makes a version for dark tones that leaves no chalky finish. Verb's refresh spray is tinted purple to disappear in lighter hair, from the brand that began in Austin barbershops. Bumble and bumble's Brownish gives matte fullness on brunettes. Vegamour, founded by Daniel Hodgdon in 2016 around red clover and mung bean, makes a plant-based, talc-free dry shampoo that absorbs oil and lifts hair at the root. Match the tint to your roots, not your ends.

Powders, a mist and a foam, and the skip

If you prefer no aerosol, the last row is for you. Nancy Twine left Goldman Sachs to start Briogeo in 2013, and its powder puff presses powder straight onto roots. Ceremonia's powder pouf, from Babba Rivera, handles greasy roots at home or in a bag. Living Proof's sheer mist uses micellar technology for a weightless feel, and Mane, Jen Atkin's brand that grew out of her Mane Addicts site, makes a foam to refresh hair and extend a style. What I would skip is using dry shampoo for days in a row without washing. It builds up on the scalp, so wash properly at least every few days.

Getting it right

Apply the night before if you can, so it absorbs oil while you sleep. Section your hair and spray only the roots. Brush through after a few minutes to spread any residue. Wash with a clarifying shampoo once a week to clear what is left, and cut back if your scalp starts to itch. Keep a travel size in your bag for the gym.
