Quarter-zips are having a moment for good reason: they bring a little structure to an everyday knit without feeling formal. I like the collar partly zipped with straight jeans and pumps, or worn open over a tee.

Contrast-trim knits add another clear detail. A clean zip neckline and a second color along the edge give a simple sweater a sharper finish. This edit gathers both ideas across easy layers, from cashmere blends to lightweight cardigans.

The first group is the quarter-zip, in cashmere or a cashmere blend. The Mango half-zip is an off-white knit with a bold red contrast collar. Lilysilk does gray ribbed cashmere with contrasting piped seams, and Lysse has a black half-zip with light piping along the seams and collar. If you want something quieter, the Reiss half-zip in taupe has a mock neck and drop shoulders, and the Chinti & Parker funnel neck in chocolate sits close to the face. For October I would wear any of these under a camel coat with straight jeans and loafers. Before you buy, zip it to the top and down again. The placket should lie flat and the collar should stand up on its own.

Camel is an easy neutral to wear, and a crewneck is a quiet way to bring it into a knitwear rotation. Check the fiber label, especially if you want a soft feel and less static. Natural fibers such as cashmere and wool are worth comparing in person.

I would wear the cropped ones with high-waisted trousers and a long coat, and the relaxed ones with a slip skirt and boots. The test is the ribbing. Stretch the cuff and let go. It should snap back at once.

What I would skip: the heather versions if you want a warm, golden camel. Heather leans a little gray, so hold it next to your face in daylight first.

A contrast edge adds definition to a simple knit. A cardigan with color along the placket and hem has a crisp finish, while a contrast collar or exposed seam brings another point of texture.

The Karl Lagerfeld Paris cardigan is a cream ribbed collarless style with black contrast trim, goldtone buttons and patch pockets. Pair a cream and black cardigan with a white tee and wide jeans. A navy one with white piping looks sharp over a collared shirt.

What I would skip: trim that is stitched on loosely. Run a finger along the edge. If it puckers or waves, it will only look worse after a wash.

Cable knit is an easy way to add texture without a zip. A defined stitch pattern gives a relaxed sweater a little more shape, while a soft hand keeps it comfortable.

Pick by texture. Pendleton's fisherman sweater in oatmeal has cable and diamond stitches in a wool blend. COS makes a navy cable-knit in pure cashmere with a relaxed fit and a soft hand. Jenni Kayne's Cable Serena is an ivory chunky crewneck, while H&M's cream jumper is a soft cable knit with a rib-trimmed neckline and raglan sleeves. AQUA, Mango and French Connection all do crewnecks with cable stitching, in cream and navy, and Edikted's Lira is the slouchy charcoal one.

I would wear the cream ones with a dark skirt and tall boots, and the charcoal with straight denim. When shopping in person, inspect the stitching for loose threads. On a cable, look at where the pattern meets the ribbed hem. It should line up neatly.

What I would skip: very chunky cables under a fitted coat. They bunch at the shoulder.

A full-zip cardigan takes a relaxed approach to the zip-front knit. It goes on like a jacket, and it works well when you want a layer that is easy to open or close.

AllSaints' Effie in taupe has a two-way front zip and a clean crew neckline. Good American's cable zip-up is cropped and cream with a spread collar. Sanctuary's camel zip cardigan has a chunky stitch, a bomber shape and brown trim, which brings together a warm neutral and a contrasting edge. Steve Madden's Dara is black ribbed with cream stripe trim at the cuffs and hem, and the Nic+zoe is a cropped open-mesh tan knit with a ring zip pull and ribbed trim. For something with a hood, the BP. in mocha has cable stitching and front pockets. English Factory does a cream funnel-neck knit jacket, and Princess Polly's gray Lexene has a blade collar.

The test is the zip. Run it up and down twice. It should not catch the knit, and the tape should lie flat against the fabric. A two-way zip helps if you sit a lot.

What I would skip: a full zip in a fine, thin knit if you plan to wear it open. It will stretch out at the edges.

I would start with the camel crewneck, because it is the color that does the most work, and check the label for natural fiber. Then I would add one piece with an edge of another color, a cardigan with trim or the collar on a half-zip. That detail can make a simple knit feel more considered.

Before anything goes in the cart, inspect for pills and loose stitching, and plan on a cashmere comb at home. Hand-wash it and lay it flat.

A soft crewneck, a thoughtfully placed contrast edge and a clean zip are an easy foundation for the season.
