Camel and Gray Outfits

Camel and gray is the quiet pairing that works everywhere. Soft gray knits, camel jackets and trousers, and suede boots and bags to finish.

Camel and gray is the outfit I wear when I don't want to think. It's calm, it's warm, and it goes to the office, the airport and dinner without changing a thing. Picture a gray wool blanket on a caramel leather chair.

Gray is the base, and softer grays are easier than dark charcoal. Mid-gray is the easiest shade of all, not too light and not too dark. Khaite's Ellen hoodie is a light heather gray, the kind of thing you live in on weekends. Arch4's Elward cardigan is cashmere with big buttons, and Citizens of Humanity's Paloma cardigan is ribbed cashmere and wool at $460. Dôen's Darcy cardigan is a fuzzy gray at $360.

Khaite's Dylan top is a slouchy long-sleeved knit, and Simkhai's crewneck T-shirt is $132 and very plain. Kallmeyer's Regina skirt is a long linen-blend gauze with a drawstring waist. For a coat, Isabel Marant's Elvane is a belted herringbone wool in black and white that reads gray from a distance. Add a white shirt under the gray knit if you want a little brightness.

Gray with a little texture, like ribbing or a fuzzy knit, looks much better next to camel than flat gray.

Camel is where you can spend a little more, because a good camel jacket lasts for years.

Gabriela Hearst's Louisa blazer is a ribbed cotton in a warm camel, and Maria McManus's cropped jacket is ribbed organic cotton with big pockets at $990. Simkhai's Aslan jacket is tan suede, and the Griffin halter top is suede too, for layering under a gray cardigan.

For knits, Chloé's sweater is wool and cashmere with a lace trim at the hem, and Polo Ralph Lauren's cable-knit turtleneck is $300. Khaite's Hunter pant in Desert Sand is a straight wool and cashmere trouser, and the Jett leather mini skirt is short, smooth and camel. I'd wear it with a gray cardigan and tights in November.

Suede and leather give the outfit more depth than a camel knit alone, so try to mix at least two textures. Gray and camel also sit happily next to navy and cream, so this story works with whatever else you own.

A gray cardigan over a camel skirt, or a camel blazer over a gray T-shirt, covers most of my week.

Suede is the texture that makes camel and gray look expensive. It's soft, it's matte, and it looks right with wool.

Khaite's Clive 35 boots are camel suede with a Western shape, and Loeffler Randall's Danny boots are a simpler suede ankle boot at $395. Burberry's shearling-trimmed boots are the cozy option, and Saint Laurent's Le Loafer 05 mules are suede with a soft, slouchy front.

For bags, Loewe's Cala shoulder bag is smooth camel leather, and Nili Lotan's Cooper bag is a slouchy suede hobo. Savette's Symmetry mini bag is structured with a silver clasp, and Cult Gaia's Osa shoulder bag has a braided strap at $498.

Camel suede boots under gray wool trousers is the combination I'd try first. Keep your bag and boots in the same warm family, even if they're not exact matches.

Our honest take

Camel and gray will never be the loudest outfit in the room, and that's fine. It's the pairing you'll reach for when you're tired, late or unsure, and it always looks put together.

What I'd skip: very cool blue-gray with a yellowish camel, which can clash, and all-over flat fabrics, which make the pairing look dull. I'd also skip another camel coat if you already have a good one. Buy a gray knit instead. It's also one of the easiest pairings to pack, because every piece goes with every other piece.

If you take one thing away, it's this: pair one soft gray knit with one camel piece and add suede. A gray cardigan, camel trousers and suede boots will get you through most of the season without a second thought.
