The Designer Bag Edit: Shoulder Bags, Totes, Minis And More

Two hundred designer bags, sorted by the way you actually carry them: on the shoulder, by the handle, as a tote, across the body, as a mini, a clutch or a bucket. I looked for the houses doing real work in leather, raffia and weave, and for the shapes that will still feel right in five years.

Bags that earn the shelf space

In 1975 Bottega Veneta introduced its intrecciato weave along with a line that still sums up the best designer bags: when your own initials are enough. Most of what I like right now works the same way. You know the bag by its shape, its hardware or its leather, not by a logo across the front.

This edit is big on purpose, so I have sorted it by how a bag is carried, because that decides how often you will use it. Shoulder bags and hobos come first, then top-handle bags, totes and carryalls, crossbody bags, minis, clutches and pochettes, and bucket bags. Each group has the well-known house shapes alongside a few smaller labels that make them just as well.

Before you fall for anything, decide where it will sit on your body and what has to go in it. A beautiful bag that will not hold your phone and keys turns into a shelf ornament.

Shoulder bags and hobos

Two shoulder bags here started as runway moments and became daily bags. Chloé's Paddington, with its leather-covered padlock, first appeared on the house's spring 2005 runway under Phoebe Philo, and Chemena Kamali brought it back for autumn 2025. Alaïa's Le Teckel, named for the French word for dachshund because of its long, low shape, came from Pieter Mulier's runway in July 2023 and here comes in calf leather, canvas and a lighter version.

Around those two you have the soft hobos: Khaite's Olivia in leather and raffia, Lemaire's belted hobo, Savette's Florence, Valentino's VLogo hobo and Gabriela Hearst's Jebb, plus Etro's raffia and beaded Kalispera bags. The structured ones are Ferragamo's Hug in several sizes, Toteme's T-Lock, Savette's Symmetry, Max Mara's Boston and Givenchy's Voyou. For something smaller under the arm there is Prada's Re-Edition 2005 and 1995 Chaîne in Re-Nylon, Saint Laurent's Jamie pouch, Balenciaga's Rodeo sling, Jacquemus's Petit Bisou and The Row's suede Bindle.

Wear a shoulder bag over the coat you live in from November to March. If the strap slides off a wool shoulder, it will annoy you every day of winter.

What I would skip: a stiff shoulder bag with a short drop if you carry a laptop. It will dig in under the weight.

Top-handle bags

Saint Laurent's Sac de Jour, which Hedi Slimane introduced in 2012, is the reason the structured top-handle bag stayed in rotation after the 2010s, and the nano size here is the most useful version of it. It sits in the same line of thinking as Khaite's Blake and The Row's Round 90's bag: firm sides, a short handle, nothing extra.

The softer top-handles are Miu Miu's Beau, Vivant and studded Arcadie, Prada's Bonnie, Balenciaga's Rodeo in three versions and Ferragamo's two-tone XS Hug. Givenchy's Antigona vanity comes in box leather and plain leather, and Christian Louboutin's Eloise, Djanis and Flo pouch carry the house's sense of humour. For summer and texture, Jacquemus's raffia Turismo, Ferragamo's wicker top handle, Staud's Palm raffia bag and Cult Gaia's beaded Lanterna are the fun ones, while Janessa Leone's Leoné, Gabriela Hearst's Leonora, Max Mara's Marine and Dries Van Noten's Crisp are the quiet ones.

Carry a top-handle bag in the crook of your arm for a full minute. If the handle cuts in when it is empty, it will hurt when it is full.

What I would skip: a top-handle with no shoulder strap at all if you take public transport. You will want your hands back.

Totes and carryalls

Liffner, which Paulina Liffner von Sydow founded in Stockholm in 2012 and makes in Italy, is a good example of how much a simple tote can carry in design terms. Its Sprout tote in leather and straw has the pleated shape the brand is known for. At the other end sits Balenciaga's Le City, the reissue of the City bag Nicolas Ghesquière designed in 2001.

For work, Toteme's Lounge totes and belted woven tote, Khaite's Lotus, The Row's Park, Gabriela Hearst's Marija, Proenza Schouler's Chelsea and Givenchy's Antigona catchall are the ones that hold a laptop and look neat on a desk. For weekends and summer, Saint Laurent's Icare in raffia, Christian Louboutin's raffia basket, Roger Vivier's raffia Tres Vivier, Chloé's woven raffia and striped jacquard totes, Cult Gaia's Amun, Janessa Leone's straw Tanner and Emm Kuo's Pampelonne are lighter. Valentino's Viva Superstar, Miu Miu's leather tote, Dries Van Noten's bowling bag and Etro's Libra round it out.

Put a 13-inch laptop or a notebook of the same size in the tote before you buy. Many totes are a few centimetres too narrow.

What I would skip: an open tote with no inner pocket for anything you carry on a train. A zip or snap is worth having.

Crossbody and long-strap bags

Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza in 1966, and the intrecciato weave it introduced in 1975 still shows up in its crossbody bags without a logo in sight. The Madison, the Loop and the padded Cassette on a chain are the three I would look at first, with the Liberta and The Mount for something cleaner.

The Row, which Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen founded in 2006, does the opposite: smooth, nearly blank leather. Its Park, Annie, Izzy and 90's crossbody bags are long and narrow and sit flat against the body. Khaite's Augustina in suede and raffia, Lemaire's croissant bags with Filt and its small Gear bag, Saint Laurent's Le 5 à 7 and Toy Puffer, and Prada's leather crossbody are the polished middle. For more texture there is Dries Van Noten's pony hair bag, Chloé's braided Tropicus and shearling Icons bag, Valentino's studded Nellcote, Prada's fringed Corsaire and Alaïa's patent Le Coeur in the shape of a heart.

Adjust the strap so the bag sits at your hip bone. If it cannot shorten that far, it will swing at your thigh.

What I would skip: a heavy chain strap for a long day. Leather is kinder to your shoulder.

Mini bags

Roger Vivier's buckle made its name in 1967, when Catherine Deneuve wore the house's pumps in Belle de Jour, and the Belle Vivier mini vanity carries that same rectangular buckle onto a bag the size of a jewellery box. The Pilgrim mini in crystal-embellished satin is the evening version.

The structured minis are Balenciaga's Le City and two Rodeo minis, Janessa Leone's Leoné in leather and raffia, Ferragamo's woven Hug, Savette's woven Symmetry and Dries Van Noten's Crisp micro. The soft ones are Lemaire's mini Fortune croissant, Bembien's Nille, Adele and Chéri, Cult Gaia's shearling Solene and Mercier, and Miu Miu's gabardine mini. Emm Kuo's Pinet, Pampelonne and crystal-trimmed Hudson are the summer ones, and Staud's Lila, Toteme's pony hair T-Lock clutch and Christian Louboutin's leopard Cabata pouch add some fun.

Lay your phone, keys and a card holder on a table and picture them inside. A mini that cannot take those three is a bag charm.

What I would skip: a mini on a very long strap. It reads as a phone case.

Mini bags

Clutches and pochettes

Savette is the newest house in this group and the reason the small top-handle pochette is everywhere. Amy Zurek, who worked on accessories at The Row and Khaite, founded the New York label in 2020, and the Symmetry pochette, with its oversized turn-lock, was one of its first two shapes. Three versions are here in leather and suede.

Alaïa's Delta clutch and its Le Teckel clutch are sculptural, Jacquemus's Salon and Berlingot are playful, and Proenza Schouler's Hex and Gabriela Hearst's Paola are the clean ones I would carry to a wedding. Roger Vivier's Belle Vivier clutch comes in canvas and leather, Liffner's belted clutch in raffia and leather, and Janessa Leone's Auden converts to a shoulder bag. Dries Van Noten's embroidered and metallic clutches, Staud's satin Muse, Cult Gaia's acrylic Ilaria and Emm Kuo's Maiden Lane and Akumal round it out.

Hold a clutch for a whole evening, drink in the other hand. If it is too wide to grip, choose one with a wrist strap or a handle.

What I would skip: a hard-sided clutch with no strap for a standing party.

Bucket bags

Proenza Schouler, which Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez founded in New York in 2002, makes two of the most different bucket bags here: a fringed raffia one for summer and the Mini Brant in suede for the rest of the year. Together they show the range of this shape.

The leather buckets are Alaïa's bucket tote and suede bucket, Givenchy's Voyou, Toteme's belted bucket, Prada's buckle bucket and Liffner's large belted suede bucket. Bottega Veneta's small Andiamo bucket carries the intrecciato weave. The textured ones are Khaite's Billie and Givenchy's Snap Nano in raffia, Saint Laurent's beaded bucket, Valentino's crochet VLogo bucket and Staud's beaded Jewel and Del Mar. Prada's Duet in Re-Nylon is the light one for travel.

Open a bucket bag and look down into it. If you cannot see the bottom, things will get lost, so a flat base or an inner pocket matters.

What I would skip: a drawstring with no closure at all for city days. Everything is on show.

Where I would start

If I were buying one bag from this edit, I would start with a shoulder bag in a neutral leather, because it does the most work. A tote comes second for anyone who carries a laptop, and a clutch or mini is the third, for evenings.

Whatever you choose, carry it around the house for an afternoon before the tags come off. You learn more in an hour of real use than from any photograph.

If a small bag is what you are after, I narrowed the best designer mini bags down to the ones that earn their size.
