A guide to grunge style in five lessons: flannel worn open, a slip dress with a heavy boot, lived-in denim, borrowed knits, and a worn leather jacket with silver rings. I would take the shirt around the waist over the blazer every time.

The Grunge Style Edit: Five Lessons From Seattle, Circa 1992
Confessions of a waist-tied flannel person
Within approximately four seconds of walking into any room, I have checked three things: who is wearing a plaid shirt, who has tied it around their waist, and whether anyone has noticed that I have. I have no shame about this.
But somewhere between the ripped denim, the slip dresses and the endless "how to" videos, grunge style has gotten a little complicated. We are told to look like we did not try and also to find the exact right boot. We are told to wear a thrifted sweater and also to buy the one that looks thrifted. A flannel is being asked to carry a lot. If you want to keep going, The Coquette Style Edit: Five Lessons in Wearing Bows Like a Grown Up is the one I would read next.
Which brings me to 1992 and a runway in New York. Marc Jacobs turned his eye to the grunge scene bubbling in the Pacific Northwest for his Spring 1993 collection for Perry Ellis, and, per Vogue, sent out Carla Bruni in Dr. Martens boots, Tyra Banks in Birkenstocks and Shalom Harlow in Converse All Stars. Critics hated it. Suzy Menkes declared "Grunge is ghastly," and Jacobs was fired not long after. The clothes, meanwhile, turned out to be the whole point: a way of dressing that looks borrowed, worn and a little bit unbothered.
Some of this edit made me want to dig out an old shirt. Some of it made me want to finally buy the good boots. And some of it reminded me that the grunge aesthetic was never really about looking messy, it was about looking like you had better things to do. So, here are five lessons. I went deeper on a related idea in The Boho Style Edit: Five Lessons From a Marrakech Rooftop and a Few Clogs. I went deeper on a related idea in The Old Money Style Edit: Five Lessons in Looking Like the House Has a Name.

1. Flannel goes over everything, and never gets tucked.
I will admit that I used to tuck everything in. Then I read how Vogue explains it: Seattle's damp and gloomy climate nurtured a preference for a relaxed silhouette, soft fabrics and disparate layers. A shirt worn open over a tee is practical before it is pretty, and that is the whole 90s grunge fashion lesson in one sentence.
So start with the checks. Our Legacy's Whoppin checked cotton shirt and Faithfull's En Vau, both in red, are the closest to a classic lumberjack check. Matteau's checked cotton-flannel shirt in navy and Still Here's Noon plaid shirt, also navy, are the quieter pair, good if you want the pattern without the volume. R13's frayed cotton-flannel shirt has the worn edge built in, and the two Róhe shirts, one multi and one beige, are the ones I would reach for when I want a check that leans neutral.
Here is the test: put the shirt on open over a plain white tee, then tie it around your waist and walk to the end of the street. If it stays put and you forget about it, it is the right one. If you keep adjusting it, it is not.
What I would skip: the God's True Cashmere Midnight Rose, if the goal is a shirt that can be dropped on a floor. It is a lovely checked cashmere, just a more careful piece than the rest.
Although, Jacobs did make flannel shirts for the runway, so careful flannel is not exactly cheating.

2. A slip dress needs a heavy boot.
Slip dresses were underwear for a long time. The Elle line on it is that the dress traces back to the 1920s, but it was the 1990s, and the birth of grunge, that turned the traditional undergarment into a piece in its own right. Jacobs' 1993 Perry Ellis collection presented embroidered and checked slips in varying degrees of translucency, layered with plaid and grounded with Doc Martens. Grounded is the right word.
Picture her in the Tibi plissé-satin maxi in green, with the sleeves of a flannel knotted at her hips and a pair of boots that look like they have walked somewhere. The Farm Rio Liz in burgundy and Johanna Ortiz's belted silk-satin maxi in chocolate are the prettier, more printed way into it. Rabanne's lace-trimmed midi in bronze is the one for people who want a little glamour on top of the grit.
The boots do the work. The Dr. Martens 1460 is named for its first production date, 1 April 1960, and it set the shape everyone since has copied: eight eyes, yellow welt stitching and a grooved sole. The Moon Boot combat boots in black shell and in brown fleece-trimmed suede, Brunello Cucinelli's suede combat boots and Moncler's Vera in dark brown are all in that family. Elle's own note is that lace-up boots bring a tougher edge.
What I would skip: pairing a satin slip with anything dainty on the feet. It is a very short conversation between the two.
Although, if the boots are suede, I would check the forecast first.

3. Ripped denim should look lived in, not shredded.
Everyone has a favorite pair of jeans and a theory about how they got that way. The honest answer, per Jane Herman in Vogue, is that the best way to distress jeans is to wear them. Failing that, the industry has been making them look loved for decades, first with early methods such as sandblasting and pumice tumbling, and now with hand sanding and lasers, which she says burn whiskers and holes into jeans without needing water.
That matters here because a good wash is not an accident. Herman says to start with small abrasions where fraying would naturally occur: the knees, the hems, the pocket edges. I would pick jeans that already do that. Agolde's Vintage Loose in mid denim and Isabel Marant's Oriane boyfriend jeans are the most obviously worn-in shapes. The barrel legs from Citizens of Humanity, Frame, Nili Lotan, Alaïa and Róhe, plus Citizens of Humanity's Ayla Baggy, give the baggy 90s outline without needing a single rip.
Here is the test: sit down on the floor, cross your legs, then stand up. If you can do it without thinking about the jeans, they are right.
What I would skip: anything with a large, single slit. Herman's warning is that there is a not-so-fine line between distressing and damaging.
Although, a jean that looks lived in on day one will always be a little bit of a lie, and I have made my peace with that.

4. Knits should look borrowed from someone taller.
Kurt Cobain's olive-green mohair cardigan from the 1993 MTV Unplugged performance is the reference point here. According to the Royal College of Music, it has a missing button, two cigarette burns and a stain in one of the pockets, which makes it very much a lived-in garment. The same source notes that adopting other people's cast-off clothes was an essential part of the 1990s grunge aesthetic.
So the sweater should look inherited. the wool and cashmere-blend ribbed cardigan from Allude in black is the closest to a cardigan you could wear on a stage. The two Loulou de Saison pieces, the Tristan in gray yak and wool and the Ditto in navy ribbed cashmere, have the right room in them. Polo Ralph Lauren's army green sweater and cable-knit cardigan read as hand-me-downs in the best sense. the sage mélange from Purdey, the brown wool sweater from Sanderlak and the belted alpaca-blend Coto cardigan from Lauren Manoogian are the ones I would pull on for a long afternoon indoors.
Here is the test: hold your arms straight out in front of you. If the cuffs cover your knuckles, you have the grunge outfits version of a sweater.
What I would skip: a knit that is cropped or fitted. It turns the whole look into a different one.
Although, the best part of a borrowed sweater is that no one asks you to give it back.

5. A worn leather jacket and silver rings finish it.
The last piece is the one that stops the whole look from being only soft. Grunge aesthetic outfits always seem to end in something with an edge, and I think that is because it keeps a plaid shirt from looking sweet. Vogue's grunge-era women mixed girlish pieces with flannel and finished with chunky rings, a detail I find endlessly useful.
Start with the jackets. Toteme's dark brown leather jacket and Polo Ralph Lauren's light brown one are the easy ones. Acne Studios' double-breasted textured-leather jacket and Nour Hammour's belted Nera in black are the sharper pair, and I would wear either over a slip dress with the boots from lesson two. Then the silver. The Solarium set of three sterling silver and 18-karat gold rings from Spinelli Kilcollin is the chunky-ring answer. The Gucci horsebit necklace, Agmes' Marta sterling silver pendant and Alaïa's silver-tone leather necklace give the neck something to do without taking over.
Here is the test: put everything on, then take one thing off. If the jacket is still doing the talking, it is done.
What I would skip: matching your silver to your leather hardware. Mismatched is the whole idea.
Although, a leather jacket that is too perfect will always want to be a little scuffed.

The shirt you tie around your waist
I started this edit thinking grunge style was a costume, and I am finishing it thinking it is a habit: an open shirt, a heavy boot, a sweater that does not fit and a jacket that has seen things. That is a much easier thing to shop for.
I will still be tempted by the pieces that look too careful, because I am human and the cashmere is very nice. But the lesson from Seattle, and from a firing in 1992, is that the clothes that look like you did not try are the ones people remember.
Wear the shirt around your waist. Walk to the end of the street. You will know.
