The No-Makeup Makeup Edit: Five Lessons in Looking Like You Slept Eight Hours

The No-Makeup Makeup Edit: Five Lessons in Looking Like You Slept Eight Hours

The no-makeup makeup edit, in five lessons: skin prep, skin tints, concealer in the right places, cream blush and the brow, lash and lip finish. I would treat it like a very good haircut, the kind people notice without being able to say what changed.

The art of looking like you did nothing

I am the person who meets a woman with great skin and, within about thirty seconds, asks whether she is wearing anything at all. The answer is almost always yes. Usually it is four things, applied in the car, and she will describe them as nothing in the same tone people use for a lake house they insist on calling a cabin.

But somewhere between the twelve-step routines, the glass skin era and the internet deciding that pores are optional, looking natural has become oddly hard work. We are supposed to look rested, even, dewy and faintly flushed, with no visible evidence of effort. It is a big ask for a Tuesday.

Which brings me to 2014, when Glossier launched with exactly four products: a moisturizer, a face mist, a skin tint and a lip balm. That was the entire lineup. Its pitch was skin first, makeup second, and as Wired put it, the no-makeup makeup look it made famous should never be confused with actually wearing no makeup.

I find that deeply reassuring. So here are five lessons on the look, in roughly the order I would put it on, from skin prep to the balm you swipe on at the door. I went deeper on a related idea in The Old Money Style Edit: Five Lessons in Looking Like the House Has a Name. Mood board of fresh-faced skin, sheer tints and soft cream textures

1. Most of the work happens before the makeup.

A makeup artist in Vogue compared skin prep to painting a wall: skip the spackle, the sanding and the primer, and every bump and flake comes through the paint. I think about that every time I am tempted to put tint straight onto a dry face at 7 a.m. MarQuis Ward said it even more simply in the same piece. Well-prepped skin gives the makeup less work to do.

Summer Fridays Cloud Dew is the fragrance-free gel cream, with three forms of hyaluronic acid and ceramides, that I would hand to anyone with combination skin. Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream is the richer one, for winter and dry cheeks. Embryolisse Radiant Complexion Cream in Rose Glow is the French pharmacy cream that doubles as a complexion enhancer, buttery with a soft rose tint.

For light without glitter, Glow Recipe Watermelon Dew Drops and Dr. Barbara Sturm Glow Drops are gel serums that sit under everything. Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is for days you want a little blur, and Milk Makeup Hydro Grip is the primer if your base tends to slide off by lunch. Ward says primer is not necessary every day, though it can help makeup last, so I treat it as a fix for a problem rather than a step.

What I would skip: three glow products at once. Pick one, or you will look less rested and more laminated. Although a full night of sleep remains undefeated, and nobody has managed to bottle it.

2. Coverage is a dial, not a switch.

Makeup artist Jenny Patinkin drew the most useful line I have read on this, for TODAY: skin tints give pigment and sometimes radiance but no real coverage, while a tinted moisturizer often goes on in place of foundation. Knowing which one you actually want saves a lot of swatching.

So decide how much you want to see of your own skin. Hourglass Veil is semi-sheer and buildable with squalane, the closest thing to a filter. Fenty Eaze Drop blurs in a few drops, and the ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 pairs niacinamide and squalane with zinc oxide for a dewy finish. Saie Slip Tint SPF 35 and Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 are both mineral formulas, the first dewier and the second more natural.

If you want a little more, Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer is made to wear up to 16 hours, and Dior Backstage Glow-Up gives medium, buildable coverage. NARS Pure Radiant adds vitamin C and SPF 30 to a light cream.

The test I would run: swatch three shades along the jaw, then walk to a window. The one that disappears is yours. What I would skip: shopping by shade name, since every brand means something different by medium. Although a tint that matches in daylight will forgive almost everything else.

3. Concealer goes where the shadow is.

Romy Soleimani, a makeup artist quoted in Vogue, has the most freeing concealer advice I have read: you do not need to cover your whole under-eye area, just wherever you are dark. Usually that is the inner third of the eye and a bit at the outer corner. Not a triangle. Not a highlighter stripe. A dot where the shadow lives.

The Kosas Revealer is super creamy with medium coverage and a radiant finish, and the Kosas Revealer Color Corrector in Magic is pink for very light to light skin, made for dark circles before concealer. Tower 28 Swipe glides on like a serum. Glossier Stretch Concealer is buildable and dewy, and Rare Beauty Liquid Touch brightens with medium to full coverage when you need it.

For skin that likes a lighter touch, the Saie Slip Tint Concealer is undetectable and lightweight, and the Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Concealer is a cream-serum designed by makeup artist Gucci Westman. The Victoria Beckham Beauty Concealer Pen clicks up and goes in a coat pocket.

My test: tap a dot, wait thirty seconds for it to warm, then press with your ring finger rather than rubbing. The same piece warns against going too close to the bottom lashes, which is how you get a harsh line. What I would skip: the big triangle under each eye. It had a moment, and the moment is over. Although a touch on the side of the nose, right by the inner corner of the eye, is still the best trick on this list.

4. Blush is the fastest way to look awake.

Jenny Patinkin told Allure that cream blush is the one product that instantly makes a complexion look healthier with almost zero effort. I would add that it is also the product that makes people ask whether you have been on vacation, which is the whole point.

The placement matters more than the shade. Stay one finger's width below the eyes and no lower than the nostril, per the same Allure piece. Rare Beauty Soft Pinch in Joy is a muted peach where one dot is truly enough. Merit Flush Balm in Cheeky is a cool pink that lets skin show through, and Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff is a light pink gel cream that blends with fingertips.

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks in Petal does cheeks and lips, which is my favorite kind of efficiency. Summer Fridays Blush Butter Balm in Sweet Rosé and the Saie Dew Blush in Baby are the dewiest of the group, and Victoria Beckham Beauty Colour Wash in Vintage Rose melts into a sheer veil. For warmth, rhode Pocket Bronze in pebble is a cream bronzer that blends softly along the cheekbones.

What I would skip: two dots of liquid blush on the first try. Start with one and build. Although if someone asks whether you have been somewhere warm, take the compliment and say nothing.

5. Brush your brows like you mean it.

Emily Weiss once told Allure the office joke behind Glossier Boy Brow: brush your teeth, brush your hair, brush your brows and you are out the door. It is still the best summary of no-makeup makeup I know. Vogue's advice is just as easy. Brush brows upward and outward, to your liking, and stop there.

Boy Brow is the gel pomade that grooms and thickens without going stiff. Benefit Gimme Brow+ uses fine fibers for fullness, and Kosas Air Brow has a triangular spoolie that smooths through each hair. On lashes, makeup artist Janice Kinjo told Byrdie that brown mascara is the more natural choice, which is why the Hourglass Unlocked mascara in Espresso is here, next to Tower 28 MakeWaves for sensitive eyes.

Then the lips, which need the least help of all. Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Pink Sugar is a sheer light pink, ILIA Balmy Tint in Hold Me leaves a buildable wash of color, and the Augustinus Bader Tinted Lip Balm was developed with Sofia Coppola.

The order I would follow: brows first, then one coat of brown mascara, then balm. Although a tinted balm that looks like your own lips on a very good day is the entire point.

The face that looks like a good week

If this look has taught me anything, it is that natural is a choice, not an absence. Every good version of it is a handful of small, deliberate decisions that add up to someone who looks well rested.

I would begin with skin, add a tint I could barely see, put concealer only where the shadow is, and finish with cream blush, brushed brows and a tinted balm. Five things, ten minutes, done before the coffee is ready.

And I will keep asking women with great skin what they are wearing. The answer will still be nothing, and I will still know better.
