The Ordinary red peel is the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, a deep red rinse-off mask with a ten-minute limit. I go through how to use it carefully, the acid family around it and the barrier care for the days after.
The Ordinary Red Peel: How to Use the Peeling Solution Safely

The Ordinary arrived in August 2016, and the New Yorker reports that Brandon Truaxe launched it with twenty-seven products sold online only. Fortune dates the launch to August 2016 as well. I remember the early shelf looking like a chemistry class, plain labels that simply said what was inside. That honesty is the brand's whole personality, and it is why a bottle like the Peeling Solution does not hide what it is.
The Ordinary Peeling Solution is a strong peel, and I want to say that first. Its page says to leave it on for no more than 10 minutes and then rinse, and the brand recommends no more than two uses per week. The page also advises a patch test before use, and says to wear sunscreen while using it. Those are the four rules I follow every time. The red tint comes from black carrot extract, and the brand says it doubles as a reminder to rinse within 10 minutes, which is a clever bit of design.
Used as directed, the brand describes it as an exfoliating step for smoother-feeling skin. I would never use it on broken or irritated skin, and I do not treat it as a casual weekly habit. If you have never used a strong acid before, I would start with one of the milder bottles and work up slowly.
The rest of this first group is the gentler acid family. The Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner and Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% Exfoliating Serum are the lighter, leave-on options. The Salicylic Acid 2% Solution and Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner round it out.

Barrier care for the days after
Peeling is the loud part of the routine. What happens afterward is the part that decides whether skin feels comfortable, so I keep a quiet shelf of barrier products ready. This is what I reach for the evening after a peel.
Soothing & Barrier Support Serum is the first one I would pat on, a light layer that is made to calm the look of skin that feels sensitized. Rice Lipids + Ectoin Moisturizer is the cream, soft and cushiony, and the one I would pick when my skin feels a little tight. Natural Moisturizing Factors + PhytoCeramides is the plain, comforting moisturizer, and I like that it is exactly as simple as its name says.
Washing is where people get careless. Glucoside Gentle Foaming Cleanser is a mild foaming wash for the morning, and I use it with cool water and no scrubbing. Squalane Cleanser Hydrating Makeup Remover is the soft balm-style option for the evening, made to melt away sunscreen and makeup without a hard rub.
My rule is that the days after a peel are for being boring. I use the mild cleanser, a hydrating serum, a cream, and sunscreen in the morning, and that is all. The FDA says that if you use AHAs it is advisable to use sun protection, and I treat that as non-negotiable. Skin that has been exfoliated can be more sensitive to the sun, so daily sunscreen is the real partner of any peel.

Other at-home peels to compare
If a ten-minute red mask is more drama than you want, there are other ways to exfoliate at home. They come in pads, powders and liquids, and each one asks for a different level of attention. Here is how I think about the others.
Dr. Dennis Gross's Alpha Beta Extra Strength Peel Pads are the closest in spirit, since the name tells you it is the strong version. They are a pad format, so the label is where you check how long and how often. Elemis's Dynamic Gentle Resurfacing Pads sound softer, and I would start there if pads are new to you. First Aid Beauty's Brighten + Glow Facial Radiance Pads are a gentle, radiance-minded pad for a glowier-looking finish.
Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant is a powder that you activate with water, a very different feel from an acid. It suits anyone who prefers a polished, mild scrub-like step. Paula's Choice's Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is a leave-on liquid, easy to measure and to dial back.
What I would skip: leaving it on longer than the label says, or stacking it with other acids or retinol the same night. More is not better with an acid. Never use a peel on broken or irritated skin, patch test before a first use, and rinse right away if anything burns.

A calm way to use acids
My acid routine is deliberately dull. One exfoliating product at a time, never more than the label allows, and a patch test on the jaw first.
On the nights between, I use the gentle cleanser, a barrier serum and a cream. In the morning I wear sunscreen every day, even when it is cloudy.
I like to put the peel on a quiet evening with nothing else planned, set a timer on my phone so ten minutes never turns into fifteen, and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Then I leave my face alone. Skin should feel smoother and calm, not tight or stingy. If it does, take a break for a week or two. If irritation hangs around, see a doctor, because a stronger routine is never the answer. Smoother-feeling skin comes from patience, a short list of products and sunscreen, not from pushing any single bottle harder.
If the peel feels like too much, I wrote about how to use The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, a quieter evening step.
