The Pilates-to-Coffee Uniform: What We're Wearing on Repeat

The Pilates-to-Coffee Uniform: What We're Wearing on Repeat

Matching sets, On sneakers and soft layers for the studio and the coffee after.

A guide to the Pilates-to-coffee uniform: matching activewear sets, On sneakers, layering pieces and bags that move from the studio to errands.

The pilates-to-coffee uniform

The best studio outfits are built to leave the building. A soft set, one beautiful layer and a sneaker you can walk in all day take you from the reformer to the coffee line without a change of clothes, and without looking like you ran out of options.

Start with the pieces closest to the skin. Varley's Cori Freesoft sports bra and Always Burke cropped tank, lululemon's Align tank and District Vision's light-support sports bra are the quiet base layers, while adidas by Stella McCartney's logo sports bra and The Upside's Pele Sophie tank add a little attitude. Sporty & Rich's embroidered cotton-jersey shorts and the SKIMS + Nike ribbed leggings finish a set.

Pilates to coffee outfits: leggings, sweatshirts and sneakers

Soft layers for the walk from class to coffee

The layer is where a studio outfit becomes an outfit. Choose something with real texture, cashmere or brushed fleece, and let it sit slightly oversized over the set underneath.

Khaite's Rita cardigan, Bogner's Frances zip-up sweater and Brunello Cucinelli's ribbed cotton sweater are the three to invest in, and Toteme's wool and cotton sweater is the simplest. Acne Studios' Sprayed Zip hoodie and fleece logo hoodie bring a weekend feel, lululemon's Steady State Superloft fleece pants keep the bottom half comfortable, and Moncler's Niveole hooded down jacket covers the walk home when the temperature drops.

The sneaker for studio and street

A studio sneaker has two jobs. It has to feel soft enough for a long day and look sharp enough that no one asks whether you came from a workout.

On's Cloud Muse and Cloudtilt are the lightest and the easiest to wear with a set. New Balance's 1906A, adidas Originals' Handball Spezial and Nike's Air Max Dolce have a bit more shape, and the Loewe x On Cloudtilt Cosmic is the most fashion-forward pair here. Jacquemus's Féfé canvas sneakers and the Maison Margiela Replica are the two to wear when the rest of the outfit is entirely neutral.

Bags that carry the mat, the laptop and the day

A studio bag has to hold more than it looks like it can. Pick a leather tote or a roomy weekend bag in one deep colour, so it works equally with leggings and with trousers.

Anya Hindmarch's Inflight weekend bag and The Row's Park tote are the practical options, and The Row's Marcel top-handle bag is the sharper one. Max Mara's Marine tote and Chloé's Spin tote are soft and slouchy, Lemaire's Croissant bag is the shape everyone recognises, Gucci's Giglio tote is the canvas option, and the MM6 Maison Margiela Classic Triangle tote is the easiest to dress down.

Hats, scarves and the finishing touches

The last layer is the one you see first. A hat and a scarf in a similar tone make the whole outfit look planned, and a good pair of sunglasses makes the early start look deliberate.

Brunello Cucinelli's ribbed-knit beanie, Loewe's embroidered wool beanie and Gigi Burris's Sylvie shearling pillbox hat all work with a hood down. Toteme's cotton jersey scarf and Our Legacy's Estate scarf add a line of colour, Jacques Marie Mage's Barclay sunglasses and Gucci's Horsebit round sunglasses cover the glare, and Max Mara's suede gloves are the finishing touch for the walk to the studio.

Where to begin

If you are building the uniform from nothing, start with a set in a colour you already wear, add one cashmere layer and one sneaker you can stand in for an hour. The rest is a bag and a hat, and you are done.
