The Preppy Style Edit: Five Lessons for Dressing Like You Summer Somewhere

The Preppy Style Edit: Five Lessons for Dressing Like You Summer Somewhere

A guide to preppy style in five lessons: navy and stripes, cable knits with collars, pleated skirts and trousers, loafers and boat shoes, and headbands with totes. I would take the whole lot to a lawn and pretend there is a boat.

Confessions of a person who sorts strangers by their collars

Within approximately four seconds of meeting someone, I have checked the collar, the shoes and the bag (in that order, and not subtly). Then I check whether they noticed me checking. I have no shame about this.

But somewhere between quiet luxury, coastal grandmothers and the entire country club revival, preppy style has gotten a little loud. We are told to look like we have worn the same navy sweater since 1994 and also to buy a new one every season. We are told to look relaxed and also pressed. The verdict is that nobody is relaxed about looking relaxed.

Which brings me to Lisa Birnbach. The Official Preppy Handbook was published in October 1980, after an editor at Workman Publishing asked her to hold the reins of a book they saw as The Preppy Catalogue. She was working at The Village Voice at the time. In 1981 she told the Harvard Crimson that she was really pro-preppy even though the book is satire, and I think that is still the right posture. Preppy outfits are allowed to be a joke you are in on.

Some of what I read about the preppy aesthetic made me want to buy a boat. Some of it made me want to iron something. And some of it made me want to lie on a lawn and think about nothing. So, here are five lessons in preppy style, from the first stripe to the last tote. I went deeper on a related idea in The Coquette Style Edit: Five Lessons in Wearing Bows Like a Grown Up.

Mood board of preppy style in navy, white and red

1. Navy and white is the base, then one stripe.

I used to treat a stripe as a big decision. It is closer to a reflex, and it has been one for a long time. In 1858 a French navy decree said the sailor's shirt should have twenty-one white stripes, each twice as wide as the blue ones, and by 1917 Chanel had adapted the marinière for her couture collection. It took a few decades to get from the deck of a ship to a lawn in Connecticut.

The base comes first. The Khaite Jackson sweater and the TWP cashmere polo are both navy and both quiet, which is the point. Then add exactly one stripe: the &Daughter Shona top is the easy one, the Frame striped polo and the Allude polo sweater are the softer, knitted versions, and the JW Anderson embroidered polo is for the day you want the stripe to have an opinion. La Ligne's Dominick sweater and the Faithfull jersey polo sit somewhere in the middle.

Picture her on a dock at eight in the morning, navy on top, white below, one stripe somewhere, hair still wet. That is the whole formula and it is allowed to be boring.

Here is a test. Hold the top next to a plain white tee by a window. If the navy reads as black, wear it at night instead. What I would skip: a striped top and a striped bag in the same outfit. Pick one.

Although if you are on an actual boat, all rules are suspended.

2. A cable sweater wants a collared shirt underneath.

Cable knit is a bit of working history we have turned into a personality. The Aran sweater is thought to date to the early 1900s, when women on the Aran Islands off Ireland began knitting to sell, and by the 1950s and 1960s the export trade had put it in fashion magazines. Brooks Brothers, for its part, dates its button-down to 1896 and a polo match in England. Put the two together and you have most of a preppy outfit.

The cables: Polo Ralph Lauren's cotton cable-knit sweater in pink and the navy Henley version are the most openly collegiate, the ARCH4 Tinka in light blue cashmere is the soft one, and the Valentino Garavani gray sweater is the one that looks serious from across a room. The collars: the white poplin shirts from Comme Si and Róhe are the clean, stiff kind, Nili Lotan's blue striped shirt brings the stripe back, and TWP's Something Borrowed organza shirt is a pink wink.

Picture her with the collar tips just visible over the neckline and the cuffs pushed to the elbow, as if she dressed in the dark and got lucky.

Try this: pull the collar out over the sweater, then fold it back under, and keep whichever one makes you stand up straighter. What I would skip: a collar under a very chunky cable, where it bunches at the neck and starts an argument.

Although a bunched collar is also, historically, how you can tell someone has been outside.

3. Pleats are a promise, and a press is how you keep it.

Birnbach said preppies have to laugh at themselves, and I think that is the secret to a pleated skirt. It is a very serious garment that wants to be worn with a very unserious sweatshirt.

The skirts first. Burberry's pleated checked wool mini is the plaid-and-field-hockey fantasy, and its blue jersey mini is the same idea in a softer fabric. Dries Van Noten's checked pleated midi is longer and a little more artful, and the TWP ivory jersey midi is the one I would wear with a plain white shirt and nothing else. Then the trousers: the Brunello Cucinelli pleated wide-leg pants in white are the closest thing here to a classic chino shape, and the corduroy pairs from The Row, Brunello Cucinelli and Róhe are the autumn, library-steps version.

In our fashion dreams she is crossing a quad with a pleat that has survived the whole day, which means somebody pressed it and somebody sat very carefully.

A simple test: sit down in front of a mirror before you leave. If the pleats fan open, the skirt is doing its job. If they twist, steam it. What I would skip: a pleated skirt with a pleated trouser energy up top, meaning a big ruffled blouse. Let the pleat be the only fussy thing.

Although the first wrinkle at lunch is part of the charm.

4. Loafers, boat shoes or clean white sneakers, but never in a hurry.

Paul Sperry got his idea from his cocker spaniel, Prince, who could run across ice without slipping, and he set out to make a shoe that would not slip either. His Top-Siders launched in 1935 with non-marking white soles, and by the 1960s they were part of the East Coast preppy look that President Kennedy helped popularize. It is a strange fact that a dog's paw is behind so many summer outfits.

So the boat shoe is the anchor here. Gianvito Rossi's Vandée suede boat shoes in tan are the polished version of Sperry's idea. For the loafer side, Christian Louboutin's Plato penny loafers and the Studio Nicholson Korine loafers in crinkled black leather are my choices, and Dolce & Gabbana's black moccasins sit right between the two. Then the sneakers: the Adidas Handball Spezial, the Isabel Marant Beth, the Autry Windspin and the Maison Margiela Replica, all in white or cream, all meant to look as if they have never met a puddle.

Picture her on the way to a Saturday game, with a loafer in one hand and a sneaker in the other, unable to decide.

The test: look at the heel. If it is clean and the toe is scuffed, you wear it right. What I would skip: a bright white sneaker with an all-navy outfit when the shoe is the only thing that gleams.

Although a scuffed sneaker has never once hurt anyone's reputation.

5. A headband and a canvas tote finish the whole thing.

The finishing touches are the part I think about most and apologize for least. A headband says she has somewhere to be and does not intend to fuss about her hair on the way. A tote says she has brought a book and a sweater, just in case.

The headbands: the Missoni striped crochet-knit band continues the stripe lesson, Jennifer Behr's Karissa is the classic one in ivory, The Row Ombrea cashmere-blend band is the quiet one, and the Anarosa flower headband from Jennifer Behr is for people who want the whole garden. Then the totes. L.L.Bean first created its tote in the fall of 1944 as the Ice Carrier, and it came back in 1965 as the Boat and Tote, in nautical red and blue, a bag that quickly became the emblem of New England seaside life. This edit has leather versions: the Marni Bauletto small tote, The Row Park small tote, the Dragon Diffusion B Weave tote in burgundy, and St. Agni's large woven tote.

Think of preppy girl outfits as a few well-chosen things she can carry, and nothing she cannot.

Test: put your usual three things in the bag. If you still have a hand free for a coffee, it is the right size. What I would skip: a headband and sunglasses pushed up in the hair at once. It is a lot of hardware for a head.

Although a tote with a monogram has never been wrong.

The summer you are always about to have

Preppy style is one long, polite joke about weather and boats. A collar, a stripe, a shoe that expects a deck. We keep coming back because it feels like being ready for a better day.

I will still be tempted by a fourth navy sweater. I know this about myself. I will tell myself it is different because the stripe is slightly wider.

Birnbach told that Harvard reporter she was pro-preppy, and I am too, loosely, the way you are pro-sunscreen. Wear the sweater. Press the pleat. Sit on the lawn anyway.
