The Return of the Clog

The Return of the Clog

The clog left the garden and came back through Chloé, Hermès and a fifty-year-old Birkenstock. This edit sorts the pairs by how they wear: flat footbeds, shearling and open toes, then wooden heels and platforms.

In 1976 Birkenstock released its first closed-toe shoe, a cork clog it sold in the US as the "soft clog" and sometimes the "formal clog". Footwear Plus notes that skeptics called it everything from a pilgrim shoe to a potato shoe, and some still do. Issey Miyake is often credited with putting the Boston on a runway in 1987, Julia Roberts wore a pair in the closing scene of Notting Hill, and fifty years on Vogue Scandinavia calls it a Nordic wardrobe staple.

The wooden clog came back through a different door. British Vogue credits Chemena Kamali, whose autumn/winter 2024 debut at Chloé sent out stompy seventies clogs, with turning it into a status shoe again, and Hermès followed with its studded Kos clog. By spring 2026 Bottega Veneta was showing wooden ones with long pointed toes. I like that the clog keeps returning as two things at once: the comfortable shoe and the fashion shoe.

Start flat. The Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed in taupe is the reference point, the same almost brutalist shape on the softer version of the cork bed, and the Lutry 365 in gray taupe is its rougher suede cousin. Quince's water repellent suede clog mule and the Jeffrey Campbell Content Clog strip the idea back to a rounded suede toe and nothing else. Coach's Archival Suede Clog Flats bring a buckle and a flash of signature fabric at the heel. The A.Emery Louis clog in calf hair is the one I would wear with plain grey trousers so the texture does the talking, the By Anthropologie Studded Clogs add a ring of studs, and Tory Burch's Mellow EVA Clogs are molded and wipeable, which is the honest answer for rain. Newer to the flat group: Birkenstock's Amsterdam Wrapped and Boston Braided clogs, Common Projects' Suede Clogs and the A.W.A.K.E. MODE Anki, which brings studs to a flat suede base. Dansko's Professional and The Sak's Bryn are the everyday workhorses for days on your feet.

With a flat clog, I check the heel cup first. Walk ten steps on a hard floor: if the heel lifts and slaps, go down a size or choose a pair with a strap. I would wear these with straight jeans that just graze the top of the shoe, cropped wide trousers, or thick socks in the same color as the suede. What I would skip: long flared hems that swallow the toe and turn the whole shape into a slipper. Clogs for women are easiest to start with in this flat group, because there is nothing to learn before you walk out the door.

Shearling and open toes for the in-between months

Shearling turns the clog into a house shoe you can actually leave the house in, and the real choice is how much of it shows. Veronica Beard's Fern Shearling Clog keeps the fleece inside a studded dark suede upper with a buckle, so from across the room it reads as a regular clog. Burberry's Urchin Check shearling-trimmed clogs let a cuff of fleece show at the opening. Common Projects keeps its Shearling Clog almost graphic: tan suede, a clean rim, nothing else. Birkenstock's Zermatt Premium Shearling Clog in antique white is the coziest of the lot, the pair I would wear on a cold Sunday and not much further. Birkenstock's Buckley Shearling, Jenni Kayne's Ashby and UGG's Goldenstar Evelina and Villa all sit at the softer end, and Beek's Woodpecker is the one with the most fleece on show.

Then the open toes. Vince's Barbara Shearling Clog puts a fleece-lined suede band on a studded wooden base, an odd combination that makes a lot of sense in October. The Madewell Vanessa Suede Clog is the simplest wooden mule here, one suede band and a row of nails, and FARM Rio's Lace Leather Clog cuts that band into leather lace. Tory Burch's Sandal Clog in sequoia suede is the warmest color in the edit.

My test: wear the shearling pair with bare ankles for an hour indoors. If your feet are hot by lunch, an open-toe wooden pair will get more wear from you. What I would skip: white shearling under a long hem on a wet day, because it picks up everything.

Wooden heels, studs and platforms

This is the clog Chloé brought back: a wooden base, a suede upper and a row of nails holding the two together. M.Gemi's Saba in espresso suede has a modest heel and studs round the base, the easiest of these for a full day. Free People's Calli Studded Clogs are the closed tan version, and Veronica Beard's Larken Clog adds a big buckle across the vamp. The Seychelles Backlot Slingback Clog Pump and the PAIGE Marcela Clog Pump both put a strap behind the heel, which makes a taller wooden heel much easier to walk in.

Then the height. The Schutz Sierra Studs Clog and the Balmain Suede Wedge Clog turn the base into a solid wedge, so the weight spreads under the whole foot. Simon Miller's Suede Sol Platform Clog is the most graphic: bordeaux suede with silver studs on a black block platform. The brand's accessories were led by Gregoire Gamba, a French leather artisan who worked at Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Goyard, and you can see it in how sculpted the soles are. Cordani's Jules is a slingback platform wedge, Dansko's Branson is a studded platform, and Charlotte Stone's Jori adds studs to a slingback platform. Bottega Veneta's Gondola Mule Clog Pump is the dressiest heel of the group.

My test is stairs. Walk down one flight without looking at your feet, because a clog without a back strap needs a toe grip you only notice there. I would wear these with a midi skirt and bare legs, or a straight trouser cropped right at the ankle. What I would skip: a heavy wooden heel on a day with a lot of walking on cobbles.

The flat and low pairs live higher up, and the last four are where the clog turns into a luxury shoe: Bottega Veneta's Gondola and Reggie, Golden Goose's buckled leather pair and Miu Miu's patent leather clogs. The A.Emery Lou comes in suede and in leather, the same low shape in two materials, so pick the finish that suits your coat.

Where a clog actually goes

In March, Zendaya stepped out in matte black, medical-style clogs, and a British Vogue writer said that was the final push she needed to buy practical leather ones. That feels right to me. The clog works best when it looks a little practical, as if you chose it for the walk and not the photo.

So I would choose by the day, not the trend: a flat footbed for errands and travel, shearling once the mornings turn cold, and a wooden heel for dinners where you will mostly be sitting down. Whatever you pick, walk a block, take a flight of stairs and stand for ten minutes in it before you keep it.
