TIRTIR Turned One Red Cushion Into a Whole K-Beauty Wave

TIRTIR Turned One Red Cushion Into a Whole K-Beauty Wave

TIRTIR was founded in 2017 and is now shorthand for the Mask Fit Red Cushion, the compact that took off far beyond Korea. Here is the TIRTIR lineup, other cushion compacts worth comparing, and the setting sprays and powders that finish the look.

TIRTIR was founded in 2017 by its CEO, Lee Yoo-bin, who is also romanized as Lee Yu-bin. For a few years it was a quiet name outside Korea. Then the Mask Fit Red Cushion started to travel. It first launched in Japan in 2022 in three shades, and when it arrived in the US in 2023 the range had grown to 20. The cushion was also launched in 30 shades for the American market, and a creator's YouTube Shorts video on May 24 in 2024 sent people looking for it everywhere. The ownership story moves fast too: Lee sold a minority stake to The Ham Partners in 2023, and in April 2024 Gooday Global acquired TIRTIR.

Here is what the cushion is actually like to use. It is a compact with a sponge that holds liquid foundation, and you press it on with the puff rather than sweeping it with a brush. The finish is a natural, semi-matte one, and the wide shade range is a big part of why so many people found a match.

Around it, the Glide and Hide Blurring Concealer is the thing I would add where I want a little extra coverage. The Mask Fit Make Up Fixer sets the whole face, Glow Pop is a tinted lip oil, and Waterism Glow Tint is a lip tint that can double as a blush.

Pat, do not swipe, and build in thin layers. Start at the centre of the face, where coverage matters most, and blend outward with the last bit on the puff. Give the base a minute to settle before you add anything else on top, because that is when the finish shows itself.

Other cushions to hold up beside it

The cushion compact is a Korean idea, and it has brought a small crowd of fans and competitors with it. If you like the format, it is worth knowing how the alternatives feel, since each one leans a little differently.

YSL's Skin Affair Soft Glow Cushion Foundation is the most polished-looking of the group, and the soft glow in its name is accurate. Yepoda's The Dewy Day is a moisturizing cushion with niacinamide and apricot, which I would try if you dislike powdery finishes. Sulwhasoo's UV Wise On-The-Go Sun Cushion is a sun cushion, made for touching up through the day, so it lives in a bag rather than on the vanity.

Jung Saem Mool is the brand of a Korean makeup artist, and it sits a little apart from the rest of this group. The Essential Skin Nuder is a long-lasting, hydrating compact cushion foundation, and the Artist Cushion Radiant Glow Highlighter uses the same puff format for a soft glow on the tops of the cheekbones.

To compare cushions at home, look at the edges of your jaw in daylight, then again after a few hours. A good match disappears at the jawline, and the wrong undertone shows up as a faint line there. Pick a shade in natural light, near a window, and never under harsh shop lighting. If you are between two shades, the lighter one is easier to adjust with a touch of bronzer, and you will get more wear out of it through the seasons.

Setting it in place

A cushion is a base with a skin-like finish, so the last step decides how it will behave by five o'clock. Powder and spray do very different jobs, and I use them for different moods.

Powders first. Huda Beauty's Easy Bake is the blurring loose baking and setting powder, and it is the one I use under the eyes on nights out. Laura Mercier's Translucent Loose Setting Powder is the classic invisible one, made for longwear. bareMinerals' Original Mineral Veil is a talc-free loose powder that leaves a very light veil.

Sprays are gentler on a satin base. Urban Decay's All Nighter is the waterproof, 24 hour wear spray. Milk Makeup's Hydro Grip is a dewy 12 hour setting spray with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, the softest choice for a glow lover. Benefit Cosmetics' The POREfessional Super Setter is the pore-minimizing, waterproof one for humid days.

What I would skip: a heavy layer of loose powder over the whole face on top of a cushion. It can turn a soft finish flat and cakey by lunch. Use powder only where you shine, such as the T zone, and mist a spray from arm's length. If any spray makes your eyes sting, close them and choose a lighter one next time.

How I would wear it all day

My rule for wearing all of this is to keep the face light. One cushion, pressed in thin layers, a bit of concealer only where I need it, then a touch of tinted lip oil. Powder goes only on the T zone, and a spray goes on last. It takes about five minutes, and I can do it on a train.

Carry the compact in your bag and it can double as a midday touch-up. Wash the puff often, because a dirty puff is the fastest way to a patchy base. If your skin is sensitive or breaks out, patch test a new product along the jaw for a few days and see a doctor if a reaction persists.

A good base should feel like nothing by evening, and this whole set is built around that idea. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Cushion Foundation Went From K-Beauty Novelty to Every Luxury Counter and Red Lipstick Is Back to Being the Whole Look.
