Korean Makeup Picks, and the Cushion Compact a Parking Stamp Inspired

Korean makeup starts with sheer, dewy skin and soft washes of color. Here are sixteen picks, from SPF cushions and a BB cream to lip tints, a wing liner stamp and a heart-shaped blush.

Magazine-style product test page with five cut-out products and a best-for note on each: Kaja Wink Stamp Original Waterproof Wing Eyeliner Stamp & Pen; Yepoda The Dewy Day - Moisturizing Niacinamide & Apricot Korean Cushion Foundation; Sulwhasoo UV Wise On-The-Go Sun Cushion; Dr. Jart+ Premium BB All-Day Wear Korean Tinted Moisturizer; LANEIGE Glaze Craze Tinted Polypeptide Lip Serum Treatment

A Stamp From a Car Park

The cushion compact, now the signature of Korean makeup, came out of a car park. According to Amorepacific, its IOPE Air Cushion launched in 2008, and the key to its smear-free liquid was inspired by a parking validation stamp, the kind that leaves an even, clean mark every time. Its lab then worked on a sponge that could hold that liquid, and the company says one was sold every 30 seconds after launch. Within a few years, cushions were everywhere.

The idea behind Korean makeup is skin first. Base is sheer and dewy, so skin looks healthy rather than covered, with SPF and skincare ingredients built in. Color goes on in soft washes: a stained lip that fades naturally toward the edges, a flushed cheek, a thin line at the lash.

That is also why the tools look different. You tap a cushion instead of rubbing foundation in, stamp blush instead of sweeping it, and press a tint into the lips with a fingertip.

The first grid is cushions and base, from SPF cushions to finishing powders. The second is tints, stamps and blush. My tip: press the cushion puff onto the center of the face in light taps, then blend outward, and use what is left on the puff around the edges so the base thins out naturally.

Cushions and Base

Dr. Jart+ Premium BB is the most reviewed base in this grid, a lightweight BB cream with SPF 30 that hydrates and covers for a natural glow. Yepoda The Dewy Day is a cushion foundation with niacinamide and apricot that stays dewy all day, and it ties for the best rating here with Erborian CC Cream, a color-correcting cream with 2% centella that evens tone and hydrates for up to 24 hours.

Jung Saem Mool is named for the Korean makeup artist behind it. Its Essential Skin Nuder cushion gives natural, medium coverage that looks like your own skin, and its Pro-lasting Prep primer evens tone and texture with a matte finish. Sulwhasoo UV Wise is a portable SPF 50+ sun cushion that hydrates and cools, which makes reapplying sunscreen over makeup easy. Tap it on at lunch instead of trying to rub cream over a finished face.

For powder, innisfree No Sebum is a talc-free loose powder with Jeju Island minerals that keeps skin matte. Laneige Neo Blurring Powder is ultrafine and semi-matte, with blue hyaluronic acid to keep some glow.

What I would skip: a full-coverage foundation under a cushion. Pick one base, keep it thin, and use concealer only where you need it. Two heavy bases tend to slide by midday.

Tints, Stamps and Blush

Kaja Wink Stamp is the most reviewed product in this edit, a waterproof, double-sided wing stamp and felt-tip pen that makes a winged liner in one press. Kaja Cheeky Stamp is a cushion blush with a heart-shaped stamp that blends out to a sheer flush, and Kaja Jelly Charm is a lip and blush stain on a keychain, for a jelly pop of color. All three Kaja picks are built for speed, and none of them needs a brush.

Laneige Glaze Craze is a tinted lip serum with polypeptides and donut-inspired shades for plumper-looking lips, and JuicePop is a water-to-oil lip tint with buildable, juicy color. Laka Fruity Glam Tint is a glossy lip stain that lasts, and Laka Bonding Glow is a high-shine lipstick with bold color in a light, comfortable texture. It has the best rating in this grid.

Jung Saem Mool Artist Cushion Blush is a soft matte cheek that applies like a filter, with a cushion that makes it easy to build slowly.

What I would skip: a full, sharp lip line. Korean lip makeup is usually a gradient, so tap a tint into the center of the lips and blur the edges with a finger. It looks fresher and wears off more evenly through the day.

Tap, Stamp, Stain

I think Korean makeup is less a look than a set of habits: tap instead of rub, sheer instead of full coverage, stain instead of paint, and SPF in everything. Start with one cushion that suits your skin, add a stamp or tint for color, and leave the rest bare. The cushion began with a parking stamp in 2008, and that same idea, an even, light layer every time, is still the reason it works so well on real skin. You can keep the whole routine in one small pouch, which is part of the point.
