This is the sportswear end and it is more useful than it looks in a list. The Adidas Originals Firebird satin polka dot track jacket at $85 is the cheapest thing in the edit and the one most likely to be worn over a dress. Beyond Yoga's Spacedye High Definition Jacket at $128 and The North Face Osito Evolve quarter-zip fleece at $160 are the two soft layers, and the Osito in particular is the piece you keep by the door. Splits59 supplies the Lyle Pullover at $198 and the Reese Half Zip at $238, both technical knits that pass as normal clothing. Above them the Eaves Mai Compact Suiting Parka at $369 is the first structured piece in the edit, the Haikure Cherry Denim Jacket is $398, and the Leset Kyoto Windbreaker at $420 closes the group.

The middle bracket is dominated by Canada Goose, which appears four times and covers most of what you would want from a serious layer. The Ash Jacket and the Soren Full Zip Fleece both sit at $850, the Fallon Puffer is $1,125 and the Terra Plaid Jacket is $1,225. Between them they cover fleece, puffer and a heavier outer shell. Acne Studios' Faye Jacket at $850 is the design-led alternative at the same price as two of the Canada Goose pieces. Alexander Wang's Glazed Denim Jacket at $595 opens the bracket and is the most seasonally flexible thing in it. Citizens of Humanity's Astrid Sherpa at $678 is the borg option. By Malene Birger's Vela Jacket at $1,200 is the most tailored piece here and the one that works over office clothes.

The top bracket is where jackets become design objects. Lilyeve accounts for three of the eight pieces, the Everglades and Sunset Jackets at $2,575 each and the Jacket without Buttons at $2,595, all clustered tightly in price and all cut as statement outerwear. By Malene Birger's Suzanne Jacket at $1,680 opens the group and is the most conventional shape in it. Saint Laurent's Denim 70's Trucker at $1,780 is the most expensive denim jacket in any of these edits. Isabel Marant's Mylae Jacket at $1,990 and the Francoise Gracie Jacket at $2,325 sit in the middle. The Rick Owens Scarf Flight Bomber at $3,115 is the most expensive piece in the whole shop and the most extreme silhouette, with the scarf detail built into the body rather than added.

Transitional outerwear is the category where people most often overspend, because the jacket only gets worn for a few weeks either side of winter. On that basis the first bracket is doing the most work: a $160 fleece and a $369 suiting parka will cover almost every day between seasons, and neither needs to be replaced next year. The Canada Goose pieces in the middle are properly made and the Ash and Terra are the two we would pick, though four items from one label in one bracket is worth noting before you assume the assortment is broad. The top bracket is buying a silhouette, not warmth. If you take one thing away, spend on the layer you will wear in October and again in March, not the one you will photograph once.
