Vilhelm Parfumerie is the New York perfume house that builds each scent like a short story, from memories, people and places. I like that every bottle arrives with a little plot, and this edit is where I would begin.

Vilhelm Parfumerie Perfume: Where to Start
A memory, bottled
I like perfume best when it works like a small story, and Vilhelm Parfumerie makes that its whole point of view. Swedish-born founder Jan Ahlgren came to fragrance by way of fashion and handbag design, and in 2015 he started the New York house with perfumer Jérôme Epinette after imagining scented leather bags. The house still thinks in scenes and characters, somewhere between an art studio and a perfumer, pulled between New York and Paris, vintage and new, memory and invention. I went deeper on a related idea in All My Love Tops and Pants: Where to Start. I went deeper on a related idea in bala Fitness Equipment: Where to Start.
You can see that in the bottles too. Pierre Dinand designed the heavy spun-glass form, and the saffron label was inspired by Bakelite Ahlgren found in a Paris flea market. Even familiar notes arrive with a plot attached: Dear Polly began as a tribute to Ahlgren's wife and her black tea. I would start with scents whose names already sound like the opening line of a story.

Scents with a story to tell
I read this line as a set of character studies rather than a list of notes. Dear Polly Eau de Parfum 50ml pairs Ceylon black tea with bergamot, apple, musk and black amber, a familiar cup with a smoky edge. Poets Of Berlin Eau de Parfum 50ml turns the city's Bowie-era creative charge into blueberry, lemon, vanilla, green wild orris, sandalwood and vetiver.
Basilico & Fellini Eau de Parfum 50ml is the one I reach for in my head when the mood asks for green: basil, dragon fruit, violet, wild fig, vetiver and green hay give its film-loving namesake a bright, herbaceous twist. Picture her leaving the cinema after a late screening, scarf tucked into a coat, wearing just enough scent to carry the scene into the night. One practical tip: wear each on skin for a few hours before deciding, because the warm, darker base notes show up well after the first spray.

A few more chapters
When I want a new set of characters rather than another bottle of something already in rotation, this is the shelf I would browse. DEAR LORD, FLEUR BURLESQUE, SMOKE SHOW, DIRTY VELVET and 125TH & BLOOM each have a name that feels like a scene waiting to be filled in. STOCKHOLM 1978 and MODEST MIMOSA sound like two very different openings, one anchored to a place and year, the other to a flower and a restrained mood. DARLING NIKKI and BACK TO THE ROOTS shift the language again, and CHIMILKA is the one I would save for last.
I would treat this as slow discovery rather than a ten-bottle haul. Choose two names that pull in opposite directions, wear each on a separate day, and notice which one you reach for when the day changes. That simple test makes fragrance shopping feel less like guessing and more like learning what you like.
What I would skip is choosing only by the most dramatic title. The best addition is the one I can picture wearing through an ordinary week, not just the one with the best first line.

Why the stories linger
The hook for me is how Ahlgren treats scent like a scene rather than a season. Dear Polly comes from a personal story, while Morning Chess reaches back to summers with his grandfather. I also like that the line leaves room for different moods, from leafy Basilico & Fellini to the smoky tea of Dear Polly. If I were building a small fragrance wardrobe, I would start with one story I already recognize, then let a more surprising one share the shelf. Although I suspect the surprising one would get worn more.
