Lame is a weave, not a colour. Here is what the metallic thread actually is, how it behaves on the body, and how to wear it before eight in the evening.
What Is Lame Fabric, and How Do You Wear It?

Lame is a thread, not a colour
Most people meet lame and file it under shiny. It is more specific than that. Lame is any fabric, woven or knit, made with a metallic thread wrapped around a core of silk, nylon or spandex. The French word means metal plate, and the earliest versions really did use flattened gold and silver wire. Almost everything sold today uses a metallised polyester film instead, which is why lame now comes in colours no goldsmith ever made.
That wrapped construction is the whole story. The metal sits on the outside of the thread, so it catches light from one angle and goes quiet from another. It is also why lame reads differently in a photograph than in a room. Missoni's Viscose Lame Snake-Pattern Gown with Tie Neckline shifts between green and brown as you move, which is not a printed effect but the thread turning.
One honest warning. Because the metal is wrapped rather than spun, lame is prone to yarn and seam slippage. It is a fabric for occasions, not for daily rotation.

How to tell good lame from cheap lame
Hold the fabric to a window. Good lame lets a little light through and the shimmer looks like depth. Cheap lame reflects flatly, like foil, because the metallic film is doing all the work and the base fibre is doing none.
Then check the base. Missoni builds most of its lame on viscose, and that choice matters more than the metal. Viscose is regenerated cellulose made from wood pulp, developed in the 1880s specifically as a silk substitute. It drapes fluidly, absorbs moisture well and feels cool, which is why a viscose lame dress falls close to the body instead of standing away from it. Its weakness is wet strength. Viscose loses integrity when wet and will lose its shape if you wash it warm.
Sizing runs differently too. Lame has almost no recovery unless there is elastane in the blend, so it will not forgive between the label size and your actual size. If you are between sizes in something fitted like the Ribbed viscose lame mini dress, size up.

Wearing it in daylight
The instinct is to save metallic for evening. Missoni's Spring Summer 2026 campaign argues the opposite, and it does so structurally rather than in a caption. Photographer Julien Martinez Leclerc shot the collection in tight close-up, styled by Marie Amelie Sauve, so the frame is filled with thread and construction rather than a lit ballroom. Seen that way, lame stops being a party signal and becomes a texture.
The practical translation is separates. A lame skirt or trouser worn with a plain knit reads as a good fabric rather than an occasion. The Viscose Lame Snake-Pattern Mini Skirt at 609 dollars does more work in a normal week than a gown at four times that will.
Two rules hold up. Keep the second piece matte, because two shine levels in one outfit compete and both lose. And keep the silhouette simple, since lame already supplies the interest. A metallic trouser with a crew neck sweater is a finished outfit. A metallic trouser with a metallic blouse is a costume.

The questions people ask about lame
Can you wash lame? Assume not. Dry cleaning is the safe answer, and if you hand wash, use cold water and never wring it, because twisting can snap the metallic threads. Iron on the lowest setting from the wrong side, or skip the iron and hang the garment in a steamy bathroom.
Is lame the same as brocade? No, though both carry metal thread. In brocade the metal is woven densely and structurally. In lame it is distributed more loosely, which is why lame is lighter and moves.
Is lame the same as Lurex? Lurex is a brand name, trademarked for a plastic-coated aluminium yarn. It is one way of making lame, not a separate fabric.
Lame or sequins for an evening event? Sequins are discs stitched onto a base, so they add weight and catch light in hard points. Lame is the fabric itself, so it is lighter and glows rather than flashes. If you dislike being the brightest thing in the room, choose lame.
Does lame wrinkle? On a viscose base, yes. Hang it, do not fold it.
