Ian Blair came up with Laundry Sauce in November 2019 and shipped the first orders in October 2021. He set out to build a consumables business and chose laundry because people buy it over and over, and the name came from a meme calling detergent a sauce. When the team started, no one was really selling fragranced detergent, and it took nearly two years, with a former Unilever laundry chemist as an advisor, to get fragrance into a pod. The brand says its scents were made with a top perfumer and are built with top, middle and base notes that unfold through the cycle, and the formula uses a bio-enzyme blend for stains, made without parabens, phosphates, phthalates or dyes. Laundry Sauce reached select Target stores nationwide in March 2026, its first national retailer, with Australian Sandalwood, Italian Bergamot and Egyptian Rose.
