What Is My Aesthetic? Find Your Fashion Vibe From Your Closet

The internet has handed out aesthetics like horoscopes, from old money to clean girl to model off-duty. Phia's Style analysis takes a different route and reads your vibes from the clothes you already own, then lets you edit them. Here is what that looks like and why it beats any quiz.

The era of the aesthetic

In the summer of 2023, the old money aesthetic swept TikTok on the back of Succession and Sofia Richie's wedding, and suddenly everyone was clearing color out of their closets. A year before that it was clean girl. Before that, cottagecore. The aesthetic has become the internet's favorite unit of style, a label you can wear, search and buy.

Confession #1: I took every one of those quizzes, and they all disagreed with each other. That is because a quiz asks you who you would like to be on a good day. It cannot see the oversized sweatshirt you live in, or the strappy heels you wear twice a year and love more than anything.

The more honest way to answer what is my aesthetic is to look at the evidence. Most of us are a blend of two or three, and the blend is the interesting part. You might be Old Money on weekdays and Model Off-Duty on weekends, which is not indecision, it is a life.

Vibes, read from what you own

Phia's Style analysis reads your digital closet and writes a short description of your style, then lists your vibes underneath. The labels are ones you will recognize: Classic Minimalist, Old Money, European Minimalist, Model Off-Duty. Next to them sit your top colors with percentages and your top brands.

The difference from a quiz is the source. These vibes come from the pieces you have actually bought and kept, pulled in through Gmail sync, instant camera roll sync and checkouts with the Phia extension. So when it calls you European Minimalist, it is because your closet is full of fine knits, straight trousers and flat shoes, not because you picked the croissant over the matcha.

And they are editable. If Phia has you as Classic Minimalist but you know your heart is somewhere more romantic, change it. The analysis is a starting point you can argue with, which feels right for something as personal as an aesthetic.

Read the colors before the labels

A practical tip: look at your color percentages before you read the vibes. Colors are the most honest part of an aesthetic. Old money is mostly navy, cream, camel and white. Clean girl leans white, beige and gold. Model off-duty runs black, denim and one sharp accent.

If your closet comes back fifty percent black, no amount of soft pastel Pinterest boards will make you a cottagecore girl, and that is fine. It tells you that your aesthetic is built on contrast and line, so the pieces that will feel most like you are the ones that sharpen it.

What I would skip: reading the vibes as a shopping list. The temptation, once Phia calls you Old Money, is to go and buy a cable knit and loafers. Look at your closet first. You very likely own the core of the look already, and the most convincing aesthetic is the one you wear with things you have had for years.

What it looks like on a real closet

The clearest way I know to see an aesthetic is on someone who wears it every day. Phia's ambassador spotlights pair each outfit with the pieces from the wearer's own digital closet, and you can watch a point of view come together: the same few shapes, colors and textures arranged a dozen ways.

Notice how little of it is about trend. A good aesthetic is mostly repetition with small variations. The same wide trouser with a different top. The same bag across three moods. That is what your own Style analysis is picking up on when it hands you a label.

Once you know your vibes, Phia's outfit tools lean into them. Suggested outfits for you, Style from one item and Generate outfit all build from your own closet, and the Styling rules you add, up to ten, keep the combinations within the lines you have drawn.

Your aesthetic, kept honest

My aesthetic, according to Phia, is Classic Minimalist with a strong Model Off-Duty streak. I would have told a quiz something softer. The closet knew better, and knowing has made me a calmer shopper, because I now ask of every new piece whether it sharpens the look or dilutes it.

When something does belong, Phia compares prices across more than 220,000 sites, new and secondhand, so I am not paying more than I need to for the thing that fits. And the closet is a tap away for checking I have not already bought it in a slightly different shade.

To read your own vibes, download the free Phia app, connect Gmail and let the closet fill, then open Style analysis. On a laptop, the Chrome extension handles the price check. The internet will name a new aesthetic next month. Yours will still be hanging in the closet.
