What to Wear to a Fall Wedding as a Guest

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding as a Guest

Fall weddings are my favorite kind, and getting dressed for one is half the fun. Here is how I would build a guest outfit from the dress down.

A fall wedding has better light, better food and better outfits. It also has a dress code that is surprisingly easy to get wrong, so I keep a short list.

The dress comes first. The Alfie Nori silk midi in purple is the pretty, easy choice, and the Toteme slouch waist satin midi in dark green is the one that looks right in candlelight. The Cara Cara Mariella pleated wool midi in stripe is the interesting pick, and the Co Bateau wool cashmere dress in grey is the quiet one for a morning ceremony. I stayed away from white and ivory on purpose.

Heels

You will stand through the ceremony and dance through the reception, so the shoe has to handle both. A block or kitten shape lasts longer than a stiletto on grass.

The Roger Vivier Ramage slingbacks in gold are the dressy ones, and the Christopher Esber Lila heel in black is the sleek option. The Khaite Marlene haircalf pump is the one with a classic shape, and the ALAÏA Bloom suede pump in yellow is for a guest who likes a little color. Check the venue before you choose a heel.

Small Bags

A wedding bag needs to hold your phone, a lipstick and not much else. Small is a good thing here.

The Bottega Veneta Andiamo clutch in gold foiled satin is the glamorous one, and the Saint Laurent Paris leather pouch in black is the easy one to carry. The Chloé Eden Treasures clutch has gold accents, and the Jacquemus Rond Carré clutch is the soft one in white cotton. Skip a bag you have to hold with two hands.

Coats to Wear Over It

Fall weddings mean a cold walk from the car to the ceremony. A long coat saves the outfit.

The Max Mara camel-mohair long coat is the classic, and the Ossou Canyon draped wool-blend coat in brown is the one with soft movement. The Magda Butrym ribbed-knit coat in grey is cozy, and the Mel Usine velvet corduroy coat in black is the one that looks great in photos.

Dress for the Dance Floor

A dress you love, a heel you can stand in, a small bag and a coat for the walk to the car. That covers the ceremony, the toasts and the last song.

If this is the kind of week you are dressing for, I would also read my notes on fall dinner party outfits, fall date night outfits, Thanksgiving outfit ideas and fall concert outfits.
