When Did JPG Elixir Come Out: The 2023 Le Male Parfum

JPG Elixir came out in 2023 as the parfum version of Le Male, warmer and heavier than the 1995 original. I put it with Elixir Absolu, the Le Beau line and the limited bottles, and say which to skip.

Jean Paul Gaultier showed his first collection in 1976 and founded his house in 1982, and his perfumes have always looked like his clothes. Classique arrived in 1993 in a corset-shaped bottle, and Le Male followed in 1995, a torso wearing a sailor's striped shirt, borrowed partly from Fassbinder's film Querelle. The perfumer was Francis Kurkdjian, who built the lavender around his idea of a 1950s men's barbershop, and that clean, shaving-cream lavender is still the thread running through everything here. JPG Elixir, properly Le Male Elixir, came out in 2023 as a parfum, and it takes the barbershop somewhere warmer, with lavender over amber and tonka. Elixir Absolu followed in 2025, adding a spicy plum that makes it the richest of the four. Le Parfum sits in the middle with iris and vanilla, and the original eau de toilette, with mint and lavender, is still the lightest. If you are new to the line, smell the original first, because every other bottle is a variation on it. For a men's fragrance that is more than thirty years old, it has aged remarkably well.

Le Beau, the summer side

Le Beau is the other half of the house's men's line, and it trades lavender for coconut. The eau de toilette mixes coconut with bergamot and tonka and reads woody and a little earthy, and Le Parfum pushes further with coconut wood and ginger. Paradise Garden is the greenest of the four, coconut water with green fig, and it is the one I would wear on a hot day. Narcisse is an eau de parfum that opens fresh with bergamot and softens later with tonka and vanilla. Since Puig took over the fragrance license at the start of 2016, the house has kept expanding both families rather than inventing new names.

The limited bottles, and what to skip

The last row is where the sailor bottle gets dressed up. Le Male in Blue is a limited eau de parfum, warm and spicy, and the Pride edition pairs cooling mint with mimosa and almond, a greener take on the original. The two travel sizes hold Le Parfum and the Elixir, and I think a travel spray is the smartest way to try the stronger bottles before committing to a full one. What I would skip is layering Elixir over Le Beau. The lavender and coconut fight each other, and the result is heavy rather than warm. Wear one family at a time.

Choosing your strength

For daytime and the office, the original or Le Beau eau de toilette. For evenings, Le Parfum or the Elixir, and for cold weather, Elixir Absolu. Two sprays of an elixir is plenty, one on the chest and one on the neck. The bottle is loud, but the best way to wear these is quietly.

More elixirs, parfums and strong colognes

If JPG Elixir has you thinking about strength, this last stretch is where I would compare it with other houses that sell their darker bottles the same way. Montblanc Legend Elixir and Rabanne Invictus Victory Elixir are the two closest in spirit, with Rabanne Phantom Elixir bringing oud and vanilla. Yves Saint Laurent Y Elixir, Burberry Hero Elixir de Parfum and Gucci Guilty Elixir de Parfum Pour Homme round out the elixir family for evenings. For lighter days I would look at the Valentino Born in Roma Uomo bottles, and the Jo Malone London Silver Birch & Lavender Cologne is the gentle one. What I would skip: Veronique Gabai Oud Elixir for a quiet workday, since oud and elixir in the name both point to something strong. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The Two Lives Of Jean Paul Gaultier and Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male, the Le Male Family and the Warm Scents Beside It.
