Vanicream is owned and made by Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc., a company two hospital pharmacists formed in Rochester, Minnesota in 1975. Brian Leary and Rick Sandwick joined the two founders as partners in January 2005, and the creams are still made in Rochester.

Who Owns Vanicream: The Minnesota Pharmacists Behind It
Two pharmacists in Rochester, Minnesota
On the evening of August 21, 1883, a tornado tore through Rochester, Minnesota. There was no hospital, so the town turned a dance hall into one, and the Sisters of St. Francis came to nurse the wounded. Afterward Mother Alfred Moes decided the town needed a permanent hospital. Dr. William Worrall Mayo told her Rochester was too small to support one. She built it anyway, and St. Mary's opened in 1889 with 27 beds. That is how a small Minnesota town became a place where medicine gets made quietly.
Vanicream comes from the same soil. It is made by Pharmaceutical Specialties, started in the mid 1970s by two hospital pharmacists, Conrad Thompson and Edward Mansfield, who worked closely with dermatologists whose patients kept reacting to ordinary products. The flagship Moisturizing Cream followed in 1980, after dermatologists told them their sensitive-skin patients had no safe moisturizer. The brand says its principle was always to leave out what dermatologists considered irritating: fragrance, masking fragrance, dyes, lanolin, parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. I like Vanicream because it never needed the word clean. It just left things out.
The trick is to build the shelf from the middle, and grid one is head to toe. The Moisturizing Cream with Pump is the cornerstone, and it carries the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance. The Moisturizing Lotion with Pump is the lighter version, and the Enhanced Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid & Ceramides is the richer one. On the face, the Gentle Facial Cleanser, Daily Facial Moisturizer, Vitamin C Serum and Mineral SPF 30 moisturizer cover the day, with the Gentle Body Wash for the shower.

Who Makes Vanicream, Answered
The company behind it. Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc., usually shortened to PSI. Vanicream's own history page says Thompson and Mansfield, both hospital pharmacists, formed PSI in 1975 after dermatologists suggested they make better products for sensitive skin. The FDA's DailyMed label for a Vanicream product names the same company in Rochester.
Made in Rochester. The Rochester Post Bulletin reports that Vanicream is developed and made in Rochester, at PSI's plant on Industrial Drive NW. The company says it is inspected by the FDA and licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy as a pharmaceutical manufacturer. A DailyMed label for one product reads made in the USA with select US and imported materials.
The Rochester address. PSI is based at 1620 Industrial Drive NW, Rochester, Minnesota 55901. The Post Bulletin says it moved into the former Telex complex in 2003 and has added to the building several times since. The two pharmacists first rented a small building and kept their hospital jobs for years.
No big parent. Vanicream's own history names no parent company above PSI. It says Brian Leary and Rick Sandwick joined the founders as partners in January 2005, and the Post Bulletin has Sandwick as co-president. So the brand reads as a Rochester company, not a corporate label.
More Vanicream, plus gentle cleansers for sensitive skin
One rule for a sensitive-skin shelf: change one thing at a time, and start with what touches skin longest. Cleansers rinse off, but shampoo runs down your face and neck, so hair care counts too.
Vanicream's own extension into hair is a small, sensible idea. The Shampoo and Conditioner for Sensitive Skin are both unscented, made on the same fragrance-free premise as the creams, and the Cleansing Bar is the simplest thing in the shower. The Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin, in its unscented version, is the body-friendly cream in the same fragrance-free line.
Other brands solve the cleanser problem their own way. AESTURA's ATOBARRIER365 Foaming Cleanser is pH-balancing, and Dr. Jart+'s Cicapair Gentle Foam Cleanser is made for sensitive skin. Torriden's BALANCEFUL Cica Complex Cleansing Gel leans on centella for calming, and Kate Somerville's Goat Milk Moisturizing Cleanser goes another route, using goat milk instead of an avoidance list. None has the same decades of work with dermatologists behind it, but they are worth a look when you want a different texture.
What I would skip: a fragranced shampoo if the rest of your shelf is fragrance-free. It rinses over your face on the way down, and it undoes the effort you made everywhere else.

Moisturizers for sensitive skin from other brands
Start with the problem, not the brand. Redness, rosacea and eczema are different situations, and this group is organized around them more than it looks.
Kate Somerville's DeliKate Recovery Cream and Dr. Jart+'s Cicapair Sensitive Skin Moisturizer are both aimed at redness. Dermalogica's Stabilizing Repair Cream is built with rosacea-prone skin in mind. Dieux's Skin Mercy and Topicals' Like Butter are formulated for eczema-prone skin, as Vanicream's own cream is. Torriden's DIVE IN Hyaluronic Acid Soothing Cream leans on hydration alone, and ALPYN's Super Peptide Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Dr. Barbara Sturm's Face Cream chase the same barrier-repair goal.
A pairing I like: one of these as a night cream on top of the Vanicream Moisturizing Cream with Pump, if the skin is dry and the weather is not helping. Keep the layers to two, and keep them from the same shelf.
What I would skip: adding a new soothing cream in the middle of a flare. Wait until the skin is calm, patch test on your jaw, and then decide. What separates Vanicream from all of these is not the goal, it is the decades of simply not adding things back.

Mineral sunscreens to pair with Vanicream
Start with the order: moisturizer first, sunscreen on top. A mineral sunscreen goes over the cream rather than under it, and that one habit does more for a reactive face than any new product.
Tower 28's SOS FaceGuard SPF 30 is the one made with reactive skin in mind, and Kosas's DreamBeam is a silicone-free mineral option at SPF 40. Ultra Violette's Future Screen is a fragrance-free SPF 50 in a serum texture, and Kiehl's Better Screen is a serum-textured mineral SPF 50 for anyone who finds a cream sunscreen heavy on top of a barrier cream. ISDIN's Eryfotona Actinica goes up to SPF 50+. Evereden's Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen and Augustinus Bader's The Mineral Sunscreen both fold moisturizing ingredients into the sunscreen step, and Forah's Everyday Mineral Sunscreen at SPF 30 is the simple daily one.
A pairing I like: Vanicream's own Facial Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum Mineral SPF 30 for everyday, and one of the SPF 50 serums for a day outside, so you own one option for each kind of day.
What I would skip: trying a new sunscreen on the morning of something important. Test it on your jaw a few days ahead, when nothing is riding on it.

Building a shelf around it
I think the best way to use a brand like this is to build small. Start with the Gentle Facial Cleanser and the Moisturizing Cream with Pump, which is close to the original formula dermatologists asked for. Add the Vitamin C Serum only when your skin takes the basics without complaint, and put a mineral sunscreen on top of the moisturizer. Skip fragrance everywhere else if you are avoiding it here. A tornado made Rochester a hospital town. Two pharmacists made it a jar that asks very little of you.
If you want a second barrier cream to compare, I wrote about using La Roche-Posay Double Repair Moisturizer at night.
