70s Flared Jeans and Boho Blouses

70s Flared Jeans and Boho Blouses

Seventies dressing is back in a big way, led by flared jeans, ruffled blouses and a bit of western swagger. These outfits pair flares with an embroidered blouse, a silk halter with a patchwork jacket, a denim shirt with red jeans and clogs with lace. It is boho without feeling like fancy dress.

Flares First

Flared jeans, ruffled blouses, silk and lace camis, western details, clogs and fringed bags are all part of the 70s revival this fall. Start with a pair of flares and add one boho piece at a time. Frame's blue frayed Lax flares, Alaïa's striped ruffled poplin blouse, Chloé's embellished Talis clogs and Nili Lotan's chocolate fringed Asher bag show how the look comes together.

Flares and a Ruffled Blouse

A ruffled or embroidered blouse is the obvious partner for flares. Gucci's black flared jeans and Farm Rio's off-white embroidered linen blouse make the base, while Aquazzura's gold Serenity wedges and Déhanche's turquoise-studded Hollyhock belt add the 70s details.

Silk Cami, Suede Jacket

A slinky top under a patchwork jacket is the more polished take. St. Agni's black silk wrap halter and Kartik Research's embellished patchwork jacket work with Agolde's white wide-leg Ren jeans and Bottega Veneta's burgundy Livia sandals.

A Western Lean

A denim shirt and tall boots bring in the western side of the decade. Loewe's embroidered denim shirt and B Sides' red split-hem Charlot jeans are a bold pairing, and Gianvito Rossi's camel suede over-the-knee boots and Rick Owens's black Mini Stooges belt complete it.

Clogs, Suede and Lace

Clogs are the shoe that makes the whole look click. A.Emery's cream suede Lou clogs and Saint Laurent's brown suede Mombasa bag bring the texture, while Dôen's green lace-trimmed satin top and Junya Watanabe's black jersey maxi skirt keep it elegant.

Our honest take

The 70s trend is easy to overdo, which is why one or two pieces at a time works best. If you take one thing away, let it be that a good pair of flares does most of the work, and everything else can stay fairly simple. A plain knit or a white shirt looks right with them. We would skip wearing fringe, suede, embroidery and clogs all at once, which starts to look like a costume. Pick the one detail that appeals and let it carry the outfit. Flares look best with a little heel or platform to keep the hem off the ground.
