A Backstage Blur Trick Became the MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick

A Backstage Blur Trick Became the MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick

MAC built the mac powder kiss lipstick to copy a makeup artist habit: smudging the edges of a matte lip until it looks hazy. This edit gathers the Hazy Matte bullets, the mousse, and the liners and mini that finish the look.

Makeup artists have always blended out the edges of a matte lipstick with a fingertip to get that soft, out-of-focus mouth. It looks casual on a shoot and takes two minutes and a cotton swab at home. MAC looked at that habit and built a formula around it. The brand says the mac powder kiss lipstick was developed to replicate exactly that backstage technique, with moisture-coated powder pigments that give the zero-shine look of a matte and the cushiony feel of a balm. It is the sort of idea you only get from a company that began as a professional line. MAC started in 1984 in Toronto, when Frank Toskan, a makeup artist and photographer, and Frank Angelo, a salon owner, wanted makeup that photographed well and made it for working artists. Powder Kiss is that same logic, softened. In 2026 the Hazy Matte version arrived, and one reviewer called it part of a 2016 revival for matte lips. Grid one starts with four of the new shades, each formulated with four soft-focus powders and promising sheer-to-medium coverage you can build.

Old formula, new finish

Grid two mixes the new formula with the old one. A Little Tamed and Stay Curious are Hazy Matte, while Werk, Werk, Werk sits between them as the original Powder Kiss soft-focus lipstick that came first. I like having both in one place, because the difference is a good lesson. The Hazy Matte shades are described as a blur of weightless color with 10 hours of moisturizing wear, and they behave more like a stain that has been buffed than a stick that has been drawn on.

The mousse is the one to watch. Buffiest is a midtone nudey pink, sold as a lip and cheek mousse with a whipped, weightless texture and an hourglass applicator. Dab it on lips and cheeks with a fingertip, then blend the edges out. A writer who tested the range says she swipes it on, blots, and only then adds liner. My tip is to press, not drag. Tap color onto the center of the lip and push it outward, and the blurred edge will happen on its own.

Mousse, liners and a mini

Grid three is the supporting cast, and I mean that kindly. Marrakesh-Mere is the second mousse, an intense orange brown that reads as both a lip color and a blush, which is the point. The two Lip Pencils, Soar and Whirl, are the tools that make a blurred mouth look finished instead of sloppy. MAC's pencils go back to 1991, when supermodels supposedly asked for Spice by name without knowing what it was. Soar is a mid-tone cool mauve and Whirl is a dirty rose, so they sit quietly under most of the shades above.

The mini Silky Matte in Mehr, a midtone mauve pink, is a different texture: a creamy formula with up to 12 hours of color and coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. What I would skip is drawing a hard outline all the way around and stopping there. With a hazy formula it fights the whole effect. Line only the outer edge, fill the lips in, then smudge the liner into the color with a fingertip so the two read as one.

Blur it your way

You do not need every shade in this edit. You need one that looks like your lips with the volume turned down, one mousse for the days you would rather do one product than three, and a pencil close to your natural edge. Blur it, blot it once, and go. A soft mouth needs very little maintenance, and that is why I keep coming back to it.
