Altuzarra

Altuzarra

Joseph Altuzarra was born in Paris to a French father and a Chinese-American mother, studied art history at Swarthmore, and learned to cut by apprenticing with Nicolas Caïto, who had run the Rochas atelier. He worked at Proenza Schouler and as Riccardo Tisci's first assistant at Givenchy before launching his own label in New York in 2008.

Dresses

Altuzarra's reputation rests on draping, and the dresses are where you see the training. He spent time apprenticed to Nicolas Caïto, a patternmaker who had headed the atelier at Rochas, specifically to learn technique rather than mood. The house describes its own aesthetic as seductive femininity with artisanal detailing, which for once is accurate.

Knitwear

The first collection in 2008 went straight into Dover Street Market, Ikram and Barneys New York, which is a debut most designers never get. The label was largely self-financed at the start, with his mother Karen serving as chief executive. Family money and a good address, then talent doing the rest.

Jackets and blazers

The awards came fast. Ecco Domani and Fashion Group International Rising Star in 2010, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the International Woolmark Prize in 2011, the CFDA Swarovski Award for womenswear in 2012. The tailoring is what kept winning.

Trousers and shorts

In 2014 he took Womenswear Designer of the Year at the CFDA Fashion Awards, which is the industry's own verdict on a six-year-old label. He had already done the mass-market pilgrimage twice by then, with J.Crew in 2012 and Target in 2014. Neither diluted the main line.

Skirts

Kering held a minority stake from 2013 to 2020, and in 2024 the New York investment firm P180 took one. Altuzarra has remained creative director and founder throughout, which is the unusual part. Most designers who sell a slice do not get to keep the pen.

Tops and shirting

He moved the show to Paris for spring 2018 and moved it back to New York in 2021, after four seasons. The studio has been in the Woolworth Building since 2017. Those decisions read as a designer optimising for the clothes rather than the calendar.

Coats

Collections tend to be built on themes of metamorphosis, with references pulled from film, dance, literature and craft. In practice that means outerwear with real construction ideas in it rather than a logo. The coats are the most argued-over pieces every season for a reason.

More from the collection

Awkwafina wore a full-length gold Altuzarra gown to the 2019 Met Gala, with the designer walking her up the stairs. In 2022 he launched a second line called Altu, and in 2024 he did textiles and wall coverings with Kravet Couture. He has sat on the CFDA board and been a member since 2013.

Our honest take

This is one of the few American labels where the technical claim holds up under inspection, so buy for the cut. Dresses and tailoring first, knitwear second, and treat the accessories as optional. The Altu line is worth knowing about if the main collection feels like a stretch.
